I actually worry more when they have a lot of cap space available beyond them extending the RFAs.

As far as whether or not they are done getting picks and prospects, they are going to need more cost controlled players coming up through the system, they already spent like 26M or 21% of a 81.5M cap on Panarin, Trouba and Kreider where those 3 contracts run past the entry levels of every prospect they have who is signed.

We're going to invent first 2F3D system in the NHL at this rate.

Sometimes I wonder what kind of tactical diversity with positions might open up if the NHL went to a 4 on 4 format permanently.

You'd have whole new set of designated positions, and roster choices would probably change significantly.

But yeah on the top of too many defensemen, I'm as excited as anyone, but like with centers, I truly believe there is no such thing as too many good defensemen.

You can have 2nd pairing quality guys playing the 3rd, and they likely won't get overpaid due to TOI restrictions.

Seattle's pick from VAN is almost certainly going to be Holtby unless we're a dark horse exposing Georgiev. Now that we're down a Lemieux, we can protect Gauthier. Howden or Georgiev, I think Seattle might go for George.

Why would they take a bad 32 year old goalie?

It seems to me that the Rangers need to make changes to get to another level. I won't make this about the coach even though I think that's a change that needs to be made. I am talking the makeup of the team. Somehow they need to inject some skilled grit and toughness in their lineup. I'm not talking about low skill, pest players like Lemieux. I'm talking about players who attack the net and are harder to move off the puck. They forecheck hard, grind down the opposition throughout the game, and are physically hard to play against. How do they make this change, and who would be on the move to make room for that kind of player?

Obviously, Panarin/Kreider are locked in here, and so is Zibanejad most likely. I always thought Buchnevich and Strome would be the guys on the move, but they are playing such inspired hockey this season. Once you factor in Kakko as presumably taking the final top 6 spot, who becomes the odd man/men out to make what are likely necessary changes in the makeup of the team? Even in a season where they have not really taken that step forward collectively as a team, it's gotten tougher to figure out who should be on the move.

If they commit to Strome and Buchnevich, where do the changes come from? Do they just revamp the 3rd line and stick with the current top 6? That would mean Chytil out by default? Is a hard nosed 3C who can win faceoffs and put up 20 goals the answer here? Or do we need bigger changes in the top 6? And if so, who do we have to move on from? We can't keep everyone.

This is Buchnevich's first season of top line level production though, so there is some merit to consider trading him at "a high". Previously, average 2nd line production was what Buchnevich has put up. I am sure the question Gorton is asking is if it is the new expectation or if it is a high which Buchnevich will have trouble repeating in the future.

Personally, I have always liked Buch and thought his production was lower than his ability. It's nice to see that change this year. I think he'll stay on track being a 65-75 point player and I'd like to see them keep him, aside from losing him in a trade for a superior player (Eichel).
He was pacing for a 55 point season last year. That is very much top line production. He has been producing this way for well over a year now.

I think that they can resign to shorter term deals (3-4 years) and kick the can down the road a bit.

But I also think that that management knows that the make up of the team will need to change for when they are ready to compete. The problem is that players like Kadri are in demand and there are simply not enough of them. But can see the making of a long term plan with the drafting of a Schneider, Cuyelle & Berard. The make up of the team will change, but it will be over the course of time.

I'm in the camp that thinks this team is a playoff team. This season is an utter failure. Underperforming young guys, a terrible PP, Goalie and player ice time allocation by Quinn. This organization should demand a better product out of staff and players. It's an easy schedule in April. I'd still think they miss by a little but it's not OK. I'd fire Quinn on principal and get a winner in here that wants to win again.
Which of the four playoff teams in the East are they better than?

Why would seattle want holtby? He's been cooked for multiple years...

They would be better off taking a different player with lower cap hit unless Van is sending them picks/prospects to take holtby's contract off their hands

I know you're big on technicalities for but for all intents and purposes Hajek is still a rookie even if he had his cups of tea prior to this season.

My expectations for Hajek are limited, but I also had to go back and remind myself he's played a grand total of 89 AHL games and 57 NHL games in his career.

So for as long as it feels he's been around, we're talking about a guy with only about 146 pro games under his belt to this point.

I wonder if Florida could be a potential ADA trade destination after the Ekblad injury.

Kreider does not lead the East in goals. Ovechkin has more, and Kreider is tied for 9th in goals league-wide. Scoring goals is also just about the only dimension of his game right now, and that alone is not worth his $6.5 million hit.

'Versatile Smith' is sarcastic.
9th league wide is pretty good for that cap hit. I have my issues with Kreider on some nights but he is not overpaid based on his current production.

None this year.
That’s the point. They aren’t a playoff team if they are fifth best in the division.

They didn’t have to make the playoffs this season. What they had to do was get Kakko to take a leap and develop Miller, Lafreniere and Kravtsov. Whether that has happened is at the minimum up for debate.

The Rangers had a forward who forechecked hard and was great in tight games. He didn't get in scrums after the whistle but he did things that mattered. The Rangers didn't want him.

They spent money keeping Lemieux instead because they still don't understand the difference between playing hockey hard and being a clown who does nothing 90% of the time.

I don't think they necessarily need skilled grit. That's hard to find and comes at a higher price than it's worth because of that. They need useful grit.

I only hope that moving on from Lemieux shows they're finally getting it.

I wonder if this guy has a job. i bet if i looked like a sloppy fool on national tv I'd be fired. no one wants that kind of embarrassing attention with coworkers

picture you're the boss and you see one of your employees do this
