Why would we intentionally overpay anyone?[/QUOTE]

Good question to ask Trouba and the Rangers.

I realize that this is the Buch weve been waiting for but if he were to become available at the deadline, wouldn't he be the most prized player this year? His value due to his play and the available players this year might never be higher. With Kakko, Kravtsov, Lafreniere, Kreider, Barron and Panarin kicking around could we move him? Just a thought

Could Amirov in Toronto be available? Robertson? Lavoie in Edmonton? Things to think about

Lundell in Florida

The path to improvement next season starts with the third pairing on defense and the third line of forwards.

Robertson, Reaunanen, Lundqvist, Schneider. Of that four, ideally a clear pairing emerges. Robertson is a big boy, which might help ease his transition to the pro game, and make him a more ideal partner for a small guy like Nils.

I think you will see better hockey from Miller and Lindgren once we no longer have to ride the top two pairings so heavily.

The third line situation is unclear. Chytil is struggling again, then you have Lafreniere and Kravstov who ideally should be improving over time. Gauthier is a wild card.

@Edge as well.

Could we see a "circle back" maneuver here?

A 4th for Lemieux seemed a touch on the low side but not without value lost/gained for either team if, a handshake circle back was agreed involving McDermid when he comes off IR in return for another minor asset.

I realize Bobbop has mentioned Ekholm in the past and both players make sense for different reasons but, at the same time, make sense as expansion slot worthy.

I'd take either for obvious role reasons.

I dont think we are pigeon holed into the buyers/sellers lable this TDL. With our record and current line up, imo we just stay the corse and collect available talent in continuous forward motion of shaping the roster into the mold that Gorts and JD envision.
Certainly possible.

Re: Ekholm, one of my friends suggested that a team that has a protection problem but wants him for this season may be willing to flip him after the playoffs (and before the expansion draft) for picks/prospects. That’s one place where the Rangers could come in. He would be the perfect partner to break in Lundkvist.

I think you overestimate the opportunity Kravtsov will get to prove his value or make an impact. It would be shocking if he gets 2/3 of the games left with anything over 9 minutes per. No PP time. Low ceiling partners. No freelancing.

If they part with Buchnevich it is because Kakko is defensively sound enough to get the minutes. I don't think Buch is traded though.
There is absolutely zero evidence that the Rangers will give VK a shot as you are saying. There is no plan.

Which is ridiculous because the Rangers have a very big Buchnevich decision coming up in two weeks or so, and VK is one of the few players in house that have potential to replace him on talent. Obviously you aren’t getting this years Buch but you need to figure out quick if he can play top six/nine minutes. If the Rangers know that they need to move Buch the plan should be to get VK some minutes atop the lineup, but he’ll wind up being attached to Howden because that’s how we “develop”. It sucks. It’s not good enough.

The fact that DQ doesn’t have any sort of plan laid out is all the more reason to fire that idiot. I mean thats just pathetic. What were you doing during your covid quarantine... probably would have been a good time to come up with a plan while the team was on the ice for practices and games.

Buchnevich for Lundell would be great for the Rangers

Not sure that’s the type of deal Gorton would look for though. They might be looking for someone a bit older than Lundell

His ability to draw penalties doesn’t make up for the fact that he’s mediocre at every other facet of the game and overpaid to boot
It’s pretty rich calling a bottom-six player making 1.55 million ‘overpaid’ when’s few stalls over in the locker room are Trouba making 8, Kreider making 6.5, versatile Smith making 4.35 and perennial third-string G Georgiev making 2.425

I don’t think we can get the player we need for Buch unless we put him in a package with one of our top D prospects and a pick. At the draft, that can probably get us what we’re after. A 25 year old winger isn’t going to bring back a 23-27 year old center on his own.

I have reservations about moving him at all. It’s a balancing act with the cap and his demands, obviously, but you don’t develop guys like Buch just to flip them when they arrive and hope that Kravstov ends up becoming exactly the same player. We goofed on the Kreider and Trouba contracts. That’s probably 3.5M more than we should have them on the books for and there will be casualties like Buch because of it.

But if Buch can be re-signed at a decent price and we can rid ourselves of the DeAngelo contract, I’d be more apt to explore packaging Strome (back to back seasons of production now with and without Panarin should stabilize his value) and any of Kravstov, Chytil, Gauthier, Robertson, etc. to see if we can get an upgrade on Strome. We can sign a 3C if Chytil is moved. With Columbus being so disappointing it’s a good year to try and get Jenner for that spot.

KZB
Bread - upgrade - Kakko
Laf - Jenner - Gauthier
Barron - Rooney - Howden

Eventually Kreider is on the third line unless Laf actually busts. That’s part of the problem. There’s room for Buch even with Kakko in the top six but unless we’re moving one of Panarin or Laf, Kreider simply has to end up in the bottom six sooner than later. If you move Buch, there’s no guarantee Kravstov is a better top six option than him, ever. Laf should be a sure thing to be able to replace Kreider and it could be as soon as late next season. When that happens, it’s unavoidable that we’ll have 6.5M devoted to a third line winger who is unlikely to be as productive in a smaller role, even if he still has value on the PP. There’s no guarantee Krav would ever surpass Buch to bump him down to the third. I’d rather keep Buch and move Kravstov, Strome, and whatever it took for a 2C.
