We replaced Staal with Johnson but other than that it's the same defense
Its another year of experience for Fox and Lindgren. Trouba’s 2nd full year. DeAngelo I think will continue to produce. They have a new coach. Brendan Smith is serviceable on the bottom pair. Johnson could be too but even if he isnt his salary costs nothing and can be scratched. We have up and coming young D. I mean yeah its pretty easy to just say all we did was replace Staal with Johnson without considering all the other underlying factors that can contribute to this defense taking steps forward. They still need a Top 4LD and could use a middle 6 center, preferably a true 2C. But dont a lot of the teams around us have similar questions marks in one area or another?

I think every team has questionmarks but BOS, PIT, PHI, WSH and NYI starting off as a top-16 team, while we weren't. For us to jump those teams we would have to improve in areas more than those teams while also regressing less.

- Can Panarin and Zibanejad reproduce the career years they had?
- What about Strome?
- Is Shestyorkin the real deal?
- Are Lafreniere and Kakko going to get a chance to prove themselves or do we see more benchings after they make a single mistake?
- Can Fox build on his rookie year or do we see a sophomore slump like we saw with so many before?

Something else to consider, in a shortened season, any team getting off to a slow start is dead in the water. The Rangers don’t come out hot it’s not gonna matter what they do the rest of the way.

I've done the full Miami to Houlton and it is not exactly an exciting drive

Yes, that's right, I've been to northern Maine and it does in fact exist.

I spent 6 months in Presque Isle for work talk about northern maine you drive more north from there your in Canada. All there was to do was drink it was terrible :)

I think these are all fair questions. But I again feel like these same questions can be posited for a lot of other teams or in similar fashions.

For example, with PIT, will Malkin’s body hold up? The main duo are getting older. Letang as well. How will Jarry respond as being the confirmed #1 with no Murray as a fall back plan? There defense is not all that impressive. There offensive depth on the bottom lines is serviceable but could absolutely be a burden.

Boston. Lost Krug right off the bat. Chara likely returns, and while his leadership is great, he is going to be yet another year older/slower. He likely provides enough to be worth brining back, but a shell of his former self. Bergeron/Krejci can they continue to produce enough to propel this team to the top? Pastrnak will be great. Marchand too. Their center depth is more stable than ours, but what about their forwards beyond them? Yea we seemed to like guys like Studnicka and Frederic in one way or another, but they are just as much questions marks as our young kids, if not even more.

Not gona go through every team, but you get the point.

I am just way more optimistic about your question marks for the Rangers being answered in our favor compared to the question marks of other teams. And thats especially because of the age of the guys we have — as we know they are more likely to trend upward, hitting their ceiling and room to grow, than some of the aging teams such as Boston, Pittsburgh, and Washington finding the fountain of youth and continuing their upward charge. Their window is closing. Their time is almost up. Yes, of course generational talents like Crosby and Ovechkin will continue to perform, Malkin, as well, but father time does not discriminate. Washington will be good again imo. I am not as convinced on Pittsburgh. Boston very well may struggle.

Yes but you're missing my point here.

The starting point for these other teams is better than ours. Other teams don't have to improve as much to stay ahead of us. We have ground to make up. If for both NYR and PIT the improvements or drop offs are similar, they will still be a better team than us because they were a better team to start with.

I get your argument here. But mine is their starting point is not as advanced as you or some others might think. I think they have taken a step back. I also think there is a strong possibility they take even more steps backwards given factors surrounding that team. I dont think the separation between the two teams is as much as you are making it out to be either. The Penguins were just as miserable in that qualifying round, just in different ways than we were.

Time will tell.

I've always said that the transition from bottom 1/3, to middle 1/3, to top 1/3 in the NHL revolved around the ability to turn question marks into exclamation points.

Right now the Rangers have a lot of question marks.

Their ability to climb will demand a lot on how many they eliminate or convert to exclamation points.

Gorton said in that video they were looking to trade up to the 6 picks prior to where they choose Schneider

would have been 1 pick away from Lundell so they probably would still have taken Schneider at 13

honestly i dont care if we suck or if we are great, just want to watch the young kids play
I think that watching the kids gel and play hard will be fantastic. I do however believe that management expects to compete for the playoffs. Not necessarily to get in them, but to compete for them. If the wheels fall off the bus (kids regressing, lottery team) would cause a reassessment by management of what is on hand.

That is not what I expect. My realistic view is that of a bubble team that is competitive all year, maybe makes the playoffs, maybe not.

i think especially with the re-alignment we are a bubble team that just misses out, which ultimately is right on line with our competitive timeline...i think the 2021-22 season is when we are looking for a playoff run but either way im happy

When I see the new divisions I see a need for sandpaper. Devils, Sabres and Penguins are all kinda meh, but BOS, WAS (Wilson), Fishsticks and Philthy all definitely bring a nasty game. Matt Martin+ signing(S) incoming?

I think maybe play a little and see how it shacks out...players will be rusty and in so so shape for about 10-15 games

I am starting to reminisce...this game at the pre renovation was one of my favorite games as a season ticket holder..I got so excited ..i almost fainted..ps..not drinking
