There was a thread on the main board about the Rangers going after Chara. Don't know much about the credibility, but I would be very open to that. Chara's defensive efficacy numbers were very good at 5v5 minutes. The leadership he brings would be good, this is still a very young team. Remember he played for Jacques in OTT, they both won cups without each other after years of contention. You can dress 7 to hit the Seattle requirements with Bitetto. Chara would be a value add to the Rangers, without question imo. If he wants to play here, I would say let's find a way to get it done.

Do you guys really care if Chara is displacing Smith, Johnson, or Bitetto?

Not terribly, but I don't see any reason why Chara would want to come here. He's not going to make much money any more, so anywhere he'd play would likely be with the intention of winning a cup/being the captain to lift the cup. Neither are likely here this season.

Unless he has some amazing love of NYC and wants to clown around here for a year, it would be surprising. I don't think he exactly lives a party-every-day lifestyle.

Re: Chara's Corsi numbers. He was used predominantly in defensive situations. Meaning if you look at the eye test, he was still eating hard minutes, but then went off the ice for a shift change, because he's old. The offensive guy came on. So Chara wasn't on the ice for offensive zone shots. That's why the corsi counts are skewed the way that they are.

If you get past that and look for what I am going to label as defensive efficacy, he's still very good. In other words, the other team doesn't score as often, and Chara is still a plus. He's still big Z on the defensive end. Would be great for the guys on the backend to learn from. Would also be great for guys like Gauthier, and Kakko to learn how to get around big defenders. One would think it would be BOS or bust but free agency is exactly what it is.

No but it could be a situation like Henrik's, where he is more valued to a different organization. Tom Brady is in a different jersey. Chara's already played for 3 NHL teams. It's really more of the challenge of leading a young team in a bigger market than BOS, with another original six team.

I personally think that the elements that he would bring are a good fit for the Rangers. NY offers a lot more than partying. Chara comes across as someone who is dedicated to their craft, so I wouldn't worry about his urbane choices. There's a lot of great places to eat and hang out, he's been in NYC before dude knows what's up. It's more about the impact he can have on another organization in the largest metropolis in the hockey world.

Not really, but he is not going to come for free and there is just not that much room under the cap. I guess he would be coming for leadership on D, but why would he leave Boston? On ice, would he really make that much difference?

Buchnevich, Panarin and Shestyorkin scattered around Russia
Kakko, Reunanen and Georgiev practiced together in Finland (Turku)
Zibanejad in Sweden (Stockholm)
Chytil in the Czech Republic (Březnice)

I saw Buch's latest IG from FL. Maybe he went for a little sun treatments after spending a lot of time in Russian taiga.

A couple years ago I was at a Sharks preseason game vs the Coyotes. I wore a Stepan shirt and got right by the glass and tried to get his attention to show I was a fan.

I finally got his attention, and he flipped me something, but it wasn’t a puck....

That’s the the only type of flipping that happens between players and adults

The part you omitted is how you were trying to get his attention that resulted in a non-puck flip. Pretty sure it's on you, not Stepan ; )

Yeah, significantly. He's basically one of the league's better PKer and 3rd Pair defensive defenseman. If you cut out the noise and really look at the type of minutes he played, he's basically the league's best in that situation. Way better than Smith. He's a much better safety valve than Staal for a guy like DeAngelo.

And I'll say this about Staal, you have a team that will capitalize on him twice in DET. Marc Staal was bad in 2018. He was bad. Staal, while sheltered last season, was good. You don't have teams taking on a fill cap hit for a player that can't play anymore, Staal was actually good in his time last year.

To me Smitty should be the AHL tweener. It gets you another ~$1M on the cap. No one is going to claim him. You can sign Chara for $1M and playoff bonuses for next year. They can squeeze him in.

I'm okay with that, as I would have been okay with Staal at ~$1m

That's a steal for a playoff team. Some team will be happy they traded for him at the deadline. He's that last line of defense before the goalie. Good on the PK, and can get the puck out.

I dont see the room for Chara with Jack Johnson signed.

I certainly would have preferred Chara over Johnson. I dont see him leaving the Bruins or the Bruins not re-signing him.

With the $1-$2 million in space we have left I would much rather look into Haula/Boyle/Brassard/etc.
