Maybe I'm just being stupid here and totally misinterpreting the new rules, but does it even matter if they give him permission? He's free to do so on Friday morning regardless of what BUF says. No teams other than BUF can talk to him before then, right?

Incorrect. For example, if the Rangers wanted to give Fast the opportunity to speak with other teams they could do so today. If another team wants to jump the pack and get a deal done ahead of time, they could acquire his rights for say a 7th and sign him prior to Friday.

That's your workaround for the lack of a courting period. Formally allowing the player to talk to teams is the new courting period.

Skjei is a better player than those two, as much as some like to shit on him

And Tampa consistently gets help from other teams with their cap troubles, it's infuriating

No argument from me. I wouldn't pay those prices for either player. Maybe another team is willing to take them on for a 2nd or 3rd rounder

$4-5 million doesn't generally net you a play driver. That's complimentary player money. I'm not a big Strome fan at all. His OZ stick infraction penalties frustrate the hell out of me, but getting him for a few years between 4 and 5 million is a good deal for both sides. He can always flex to RW or 3C during that time, and it doesn't cap string you.

The teams to watch today are Arizona and Ottawa. Arizona desperately needs draft capital and the are shopping a number of their veterans. No trades today, no additional picks until next year. Ottawa has seven picks in the first two rounds and want to move a couple for veteran help. That may come after the first round.
If Arizona doesn't trade OEL today I would be shocked. Waiting a year for picks won't help much.

it helps that their “bad” contracts are still good players with value. Unlike ours or Toronto’s.

So teams still have to outbid each other for the talent and Tampa will get a good deal out of it. Teams arent bailing Tampa out as much as adding to their own team.

Detroit bailed us out. Hope u can see the difference.

Think this highlights how chaotic buffalo is. They trade for him at the deadline basically to get him there and try to give themselves a better chance to sign a soon to be vet ufa to help add some bottom 6 depth to that team and then now they just tell him we dont care, enjoy yourself somewhere else. Highlights a difference in thought process between Botterill and Smyth OR an ownership becoming less willing to spend. It will be interesting to see how Buffalo plays out over the coming year even aside from Eichel.

Why would you want him as a 3c? His d play is weak and he is bad on draws. He has to be a top 6 player for him to be effective. He isn't a player you are using for d zone starts or for matchups.

I personally feel that a player like Tyler Johnson and the contract in front of him has closer to negative value than it does a first round pick

i wonder if Tampa would eat some of the contract to still get assets. Say 33% of the contract which would still free up money for them, but also make the Johnson contract alot more appealing

This was a top-5 offensive team in hockey last year with Smith and Staal dressing and no fourth line to speak of. Imagine improvements from Chytil, Kakko, Lafreniere's rookie year, Gauthier, etc. They gotta tighten it up defensively, but man, they have a shot to have a dangerous attack.
One thing many of us forget is Gauthier is a 1st round pick. I wouldn't even count what he did last year, we are essentially adding another 1st round talent to our team. I hope he gets a chance on the 3rd line now that he has a full offseason, plus the bubble, with the team.

I'd rather let an ELC be a complementary player than give out 4 million to someone who's just along for the ride.

Anyone up for trading #22 for a chauffer and chef? Drive the Russians around safely and make sure Kakko eats right.

Alzner has a higher cap hit this year as a buy out than he would if he were assigned to the AHL.
and in the future years during his term?

It probably wont happen, but I just see that as the landing spot if he were traded. Habs are always trying to find that star center. MB is still under scrutiny. Big move to fill the big desire of the fans and ownership. They want that marketable star canadian kid
