Habs could be 3pts back of Det / CBJ as of Sat night and potentially 1 as of next Tuesday night w TBay/Car being their next opponent
Those teams have been playing so well though.

And we didn't look great last night. The Sabres have been playing well. Interested to see how we do against them.

There are 3 teams between us and the wildcard spot and the Islanders can also overtake us. But yes if we win all our games and the teams above us and the Islanders all go on a horrible finish, we can make the playoffs. If you think it's even remotely realistic, then kudos to you on that optimism.

Neither did Jets who also won in OT or Cgy who scored towards end of 3rd period to break a tie…

It’s not blind optimism, Habs schedule for remainder of the year vs teams they’re competing with for a wildcard spot is easier in strength including 3 back-to-backs all within 1hr flight or less (Van-Sea, Phi-Car, Sens-Tor), and play:

- Sens & Philly x2
- NYI, Det, Bos

Habs were the best team in the league dealing with the hardest schedule and went to the worst team in the league when it got significantly easier. So I think it’s blind optimism to assume that the 3 teams fighting for their playoff lives will all completely shit to bed, the Isles won’t overtake us, the Flyers give up completely, AND the Habs play like a top team in the league for the rest of the season without Guhle.

If the Habs don’t win both games vs Buf, this exercise is a moot point, but if they do…. Habs will be 2pts & 3pts from wildcard spots with Det / CBJ holding game in hand that’s reality not blind optimism.

Playing 2 or 3 games better than opposition over final 20+ GP does not require your opponent “completely shitting the bed”, it’s the reality of league wide parity..

You're ignoring the 3 teams ahead of us and 2 teams right on our asses, it's definitely blind optimism. The points difference isn't the issue. The issue is the number of teams we need to outperform while already being behind the eight ball. To make it simple, we need to do better than 6 teams playing competitive hockey as well to make the playoffs regardless of point totals.

When you're competing for limited spots against many teams, you definitely need them do shit to bed because all it takes is one of those higher ranked teams than us to match our pace and we're done.

These two games against the Sabres shouldn't matter as that skid before the break already set our fate for this season unless everything works in our favour for the rest of the season without our best overall dman.

Of course I'd rather a top 5 pick again but I'm ok with the team winning as well, they need to take steps forward too.

Ideally a pick near ~10th overall (where they are now) is attainable.

If we can walk away with Carter Bear at the draft I’ll be happy. Guy is a bulldog.

The way we’re going we won’t be a position to draft one of the C’s.

Brady Martin is a C and brings a lot of jam and his skill is elevating. I wouldn't mind that at all.

I've already given up on getting Frondell or Desnoyers, we'd have to completely crater to be in range for them now.
