Can't believe we are talking about the 2006 draft right now but yes, Sanguinetti was widely regarded as a borderline top 10, top 15 guy leading up to the draft that the NYR "stole"
bobby clarke forgot Giroux's name on stage bc they were so set on drafting bobby sangs

Sure, and I agree.

I don't think expecting him to play on your third line at say 1.5-2m AAV is a bad option though.
bottom 6 role is fine, but only if you have upgraded 2c and are not expecting to shoehorn chytil into that spot before he shows he is able and ready to take it, and with nyr commitment to use him there and see if he can handle the middle it just doesnt add up unless wennberg comes here to be a 4c (which wont happen) OR chytil is dealt for a bonafide 2c. We shall see

get the feeling they don't plan to do much today. Today is Lafrenierre's day
You may be right. Personally I’m ok with that. I just really want a good C prospect preferably one that falls in our laps but it somebody falls into that 16-18 range we don’t expect I’m hoping we can pounce on that

Hinostrozza would be a nice Fast replacement in terms of speed an ability to get in on the forecheck. I'd be somewhat okay trading Strome and going into the season with Chytil/Wennberg as the 2/3C tandem IF nothing else presents itself.

Before anyone freaks out over #22, just remember that our draft record in the late 1st is commendable. Very consistent success so I don't know if second guessing them at this point is worth the mental bandwidth.

Exactly. Every year on this board this happens. Draft pick is made and half the people freak out. Sometimes the player becomes something of value. Other times they don't but the same goes for the player(s) that the posters wanted the Rangers to pick (just nobody gets called out on it).

Anyways, hasn't it been widely reported that the likely players available in the last half of the first through the first half of the second are kind of all grouped together with professional scouts disagreeing on a lot of them? Unless the Rangers go way off board and choose somebody whose widely considered a 3rd round pick with the 22nd, I'm not gonna get my feathers ruffled if they choose one player over a few others.

This.

You dont draft for current needs. You draft the BPA and if that happens to fall into your short and longterm needs so be it.

Case in point - If Askarov is there at 22 I would want the Rangers to select him. He wont - but he would be a huge chip to have in the system that can help acquire the player you need to fill a need.

Hell, I'd be ok with them drafting Askarov because he could be a top flight starting G for the Rangers in several years.

Yeah, sounds like one way or another he's not long for this team.

Definitely feels that way and I won't lie, not sure I understand it. Even if he is a 1 year stop gap he has proven chemistry w Panarin. No guarantee any other signing will work there.

It has to be connected to a possible trade for a 2c. Only way it makes any sense. Would be incredibly ballsy to not qualify Strome before the deadline tomorrow without that 2C in hand. Though if he has no trade value (I'd be surprised?) getting locked in for even 1 year could kill that 2C search due to cap room this year.

yiu can walk away from an arb number. That shouldn’t have any bearing on his qualifying offer
If it's over $4.5 yes. There could be a number in the $3.2-4.5M range they are worried about. I wouldn't be worried about it, but it's not my decision to make.

I agree it's odd

Obviously we don't have the full picture but for a guy they're actively pitching to other teams, it seems like they're not really showing much interest in trying to keep him which can't help trade matters lol

So I guess they plan to make a pick at 22? Kind of shocked tbh.

I wouldn't be so sure of that.

I think a lot depends on what happens 1-20 and where Askarov is picked.

Despite what some of the media has said regarding the draft floor vs the zoom calls and having less action on the draft tables, it really is no different.
If you watch the draft all of the teams have phones and seldom walk over to another teams table anyway. It's just a long distance call now.

And as always you have a ton of conversations leading up to the draft and it's easy to revisit a deal if a team sees their guy drop or is chosen ahead of their pick. It's a deep draft. I think we could see some movement at the bottom of the first round, but I could be wrong.

Definitely reading too much into the Wennberg thing but I gotta think JD has some good insight there. He was with Columbus for that draft and probably understands why they liked him so much and why his play slipped the last couple years.

Can someone sticky that the qualifying offer deadline has been shifted to wednesday at 5pm so all this strome nonsense can be put off for another 24hrs...
