And this is where we disagree. I think a competent LW and PKer, who can also play C, is a better fit on this team than a C/RW who doesn't PK.

Though I will grant you, we have heard a lot more of Namestnikov's name (including from @bobbop and @Edge among others) than we have of Strome's, so perhaps you're right. We shall soon see!

Strome does PK though.

I mean, Strome got the eighth most time among forwards on the team. Namestnikov got the second most (128 min), and more than twice as much as he did (59 min).

Granted, I'm only looking at full season numbers, and not from post-trade, but that's still pretty stark.

EDIT: let me be clear, in the longer term I'd also prefer to keep Strome, and obviously, Namestnikov (depending on potential salary retention) can provide more relief. This is all just an exercise in trying to suss out how management may be thinking about it.

I honestly think Namestnikov has more value around the league than Strome to begin with. People ding him because he only produced with great players, but teams with great players are always looking for role guys to skate with them.

He's a great fit with Edmonton. He adds some versatility to a line with McDavid and Draisaitl or he lines up as the 3C. If he doesn't work out they flip him at the deadline or let him walk as a UFA.

73 minutes!

And also not from post-TDL. He was definitely the 3rd center option on the PK behind Hayes and Zibanejad, but once Hayes was gone I seem to remember his PK minutes going up. Could be wrong about that.

?

Thought it was 5pm... is there some kind of deadline to announce waivers?
5pm is the deadline for putting in paperwork for the buyouts.

In Smith's case, even though it's the offseason, I believe being put on unconditional waivers at noon is also part of the process instead of just filing the paperwork. @mouser is this right?

Staal/Shattenkirk can have their buyout paperwork filed at 4:59pm.

If you want to buyout someone who requires waivers, you have to put them on waivers first. The waiver deadline is noon. Therefore, although the buyout window doesn't close until 5pm, we will know (about anyone requiring waivers) today at noon.

Theoretically, you could buy out a waivers-exempt youngster, or more likely, a vet who has an NMC and therefore can't be sent down (though you do have to offer them the option of going on waivers, and therefore the news might still leak earlier), and we wouldn't know until the later, 5pm, deadline.

Between the MLB trade deadline being in 5 hours, and the Rangers buyout window closing in 6, it's gonna be a day on Twitter.

So when it comes to Shatty, Smith & Staal - is Smith the only one who eligible to be waived because the other two have NMC's in their contracts?

I'm not entirely convinced this is the case. All the CBA really says is that waiver requests will be processed at noon, but that's not the time they need to put in the request. The way it reads to me, the Rangers could put in the request at 4:59pm today, fulfilling the conditions for the buyout, and it will be processed at noon tomorrow.

It seems as if some of you prefer hockey transactions over the actual sport/team

I thought the waiver notice had to be made simultaneous to the buyout notification?

Shit, I've been wrong before. One thing's for certain – we will definitely, definitely know by 5pm today.
