If we end up trading Kreider for 50 cents on the dollar, I'm sure you'll agree that it was an issue too.

there is literally 0% chance of that happening...we might give other guys away for less cause they didn't have much value anyway. and we might get back less than the unrealistic expectations for trades, but we aren't moving kreider for less than fair value whether thats now or the deadline

I don't think this has been posted and I'm not sure how legit these guys are but...

Basically, 4 US based teams have shown interest in Brassard, including 2 teams he has played for previously.

If true, that has to be the Jackets and Rangers.

I don't know why everyone assumes that Kreider is going to be moved on the cheap.

Any leverage you think the Rangers will lose by being "against the cap" will be negated by the amount of bidders for him. This isn't going to be a 1-2 team thing, we're probably going to be looking at a half dozen or more teams who will be in on this.

Of course, they also don't HAVE to trade him now. There are other avenues they can seek to clear up space.

Brassard would be a great stopgap option for the center depth that can rotate between the 2nd and 3rd lines. He knows the city and organization. Could be a solid fit for him and for us.

I'm all for a 1 year show me deal similar to what @Tob was suggesting.

He may be cooked but in terms of risk/reward thats a gamble I'd be willing to take.

Obviously depends on what he will take but signing Brassard for one year and then trading Strome to open up cap space and get some asset would be a smart move. He was awful last year but was good as recently as the year before.

I take Strome or Namestnikov over Brassard as a stop gap at C if needed. And we are talking specifically 2C because if this position goes to a vet - 3C will be a kid for sure.

Yeah but its Brass at 1.5 vs Strome at 3.1 or Namesnikov at 4.

Strome is not going to shoot 20% again this year. Namesnikov is likely to be moved regardless.

FWIW, I'd still send Kreider out too.

Brassard as center depth or we go all in the Gaborik sweepstakes.

That is not correct. Finding a cheaper player with those traits while Staal is on the roster does what exactly? After his contract runs out, by all means go for one of those cheaper players. But when you have a player that can't be moved, adding a cheaper version of him is completely redundant.

There is value in what he brings. Would I prefer Staal to be traded and find someone else to bring those traits? Yes. But I realized a while ago, and everyone else here needs to as well, that isn't happening. Barring a miracle, he can't/won't be moved (NMC). So if you are going to be stuck with him, at least utilize what he does have - experience and leadership.

It only makes sense to buy him out next year anyways...

Otherwise it's a lot of list cap space for years that we probably need that cap space for bridge contracts on some guys that are coming off ELCs

Yeah, but we didn't really trade Kreider for 50 cents on the dollar.

We traded Kreider for 50 cents on the dollar and also Artemi Panarin.

The circumstances surrounding us getting rid of Kreider and thus not getting value are directly related to the fact that we just signed a superstar to replace Kreider's spot in the lineup (1st line LW). Has to be taken into account.
You could "look" at it that way if you wanted to, but Kreider's value is completely unrelated to Panarin.

We want to maximize it and anything less would be disappointing.

And right now Strome might be the 2C.

Namestnikov likely wont be here. He is making $4 million. We need that space.

I was muttering about this to myself on the can the other day. a $1.5M 1 year rebound deal for Brassard to come back and play in NY would likely be something he'd want and a low risk move low cap high reward move we need for our center depth.

That also solves our captaincy issue. :sarcasm:

Brassard is done. But it would be ironic in regards to “who won the trade” with Ottawa.

Rangers traded Marian Gaborik to acquire Derick Brassard (and 2 others). Brassard and Gaborik were teammates in Ottawa for 12 days.

If he could be teammates with Zibanejad, that would make it 2 players he was traded for, he got to play with

We could then also trade B Smith (which was part of the deal/2nd rounder that was sent to Detroit/ from Ottawa for getting Zib for Brass) for M Gaborik (on LTIR) and make it very interesting. Put the old band back together... not

Why is Brassard done because he had one awful year? The reason he’s potentially available for so cheap is because everyone believes that. Where’s the risk if it goes wrong? The whole league thought the same way of Eric Staal after having a bad year before he signed cheaply in MIN and bounced back in a huge way. Yes, Staals deal was for 3 years and not as cheap and there’s no need to nitpick the fact that he was far better in his prime that’s not the point.

Quinn has not attachment to him if they sign him and he’s terrible he can be waived/scratched/sent to the AHL. Obviously this would be contingent on clearing cap space in the first place by Strome/Names are good ways to do it and they’re not going to plan on having 3 20 year old centers.

I’m not advocating spending a lot for him but I think if you can get him around 1M or very slightly above it’s a nice move. And if you think he’ll sign for much more then that well that doesn’t really correspond with the going theory of him being done.
