Been a lot made of Strome's high shooting percentage as a Ranger. But if you look at his career stats, the higher shooting percentage essentially meant he ended up equaling his point totals of previous seasons after a horrendous start with the Oilers. Meaning, points wise, the Strome we saw, is the Strome we would roughly get over 82 if he doesn't improve any.

For his career, his underlying possession numbers are actually pretty decent. He's really subpar on faceoffs for his career. Point is, I think too much has been made of his higher shooting percentage. The idea/narrative that we saw Strome playing out of his mind due to his higher shooting percentage seems like an overstatement. He was effective in many other ways besides his 18 goals.

If anything, it seems the youthful players he played with during his time on the NYR last season hurt some of his underlying numbers a bit compared to previous years.

While we do often have a habit of overvaluing some of our own, I do think in this case we are undervaluing Strome and much of it due to the low expectations that came with getting him for Ryan Spooner. Strome isn't the fastest, nor the biggest -- but his hockey IQ is above average and he's an overall effective player and that would hold true regardless of shooting percentage.

Is he overpaid for what he brings? Not really.

Is he a 2nd line center???? That's a different story...

I would like to see Strome the 3rd RW w Chytil at 2nd line C

Yeah, but we didn't really trade Kreider for 50 cents on the dollar.

We traded Kreider for 50 cents on the dollar and also Artemi Panarin.

The circumstances surrounding us getting rid of Kreider and thus not getting value are directly related to the fact that we just signed a superstar to replace Kreider's spot in the lineup (1st line LW). Has to be taken into account.
In would think (hope) the plan is:
Get max value for Kreider, regardless of cap (within reason).
Trade some combo of Namestnikov, Strome, Fast, Shattenkirk, Smith as cap dumps as they're sunk cost now.
Buyouts as last resort.

Ryan Strome is somebody you’d want to keep for this season. He can play RW in the middle six or C on the third line, which is exactly what the Rangers need.

Just to be clear this is the Ryan Strome we're talking about. The one who looks bad by multiple models and almost all metrics. And we want this guy as a possible 2C?

Strome is an interesting player. He did a 180 from his junior days, went from being very noticeable to meh. But meh is not bad in the NHL if you're effective, which he is. He plays a complete game and maybe it's his junior pedigree, his salary, or what we got him for but it does seem like he goes underrated around here.

We have this idea that he's a spare part but I see him as a guy who could be in the league 10+ years. He's halfway there already and looks to be improving under Quinn. He's certainly a guy who could play a 3rd line role for most teams.

no one WANTS strome to be the 2c...I think most hope that chytil can take the next step in his career and play there strome as a 2c would be nothing more than a placeholder until the kids are ready if putting them in that spot will hurt their development.

I think that it’s very likely that we will have a 1st line and then at least two lines with equal responsibilities, if not three. If Fast is back in form it’s perfectly possible that the 4th line provide enough spark to be equally important to line 2 and 3 if they have inconsistent young rookies on them.

With our current centers, I would prefer to see Howden with Kakko if not with Ziba. Or Lias if he really has taken a step during the summer, if not I would like to see Lias in HFD. Not Chytil or Strome.

I think that is the best position for Kakko. Easier match-ups. A little smaller role at the start of games, but still two guys who very loyally would support him and look to him for creativeness. Then on nights when he is on, you can start to move him up.

Without Kreider:

Lemieux-Howden-Kakko

With Kreider and without Names

Kakko should never play on a wing with Brendan Lemieux and Brett Howden

I don’t see him as a capable placeholder. He was among the worst in the league in many categories last year other than shooting 23% as a Ranger. I’d rather just rotate the 2C between the three kids and let Strome play in a 3/4th line role if he’s not traded (which would be my main preference).

Where’s Panarin? Lol

If Strome stays, I hope hes on the 4th line.

Means that our 2nd year guys are holding up.

Also, Kakko needs to play on a line with either Panarin, Kravstov or Chytil. Those guys murder or will murder zone entries which will work to his benefit.

I kind of like the idea of having Zibanejad flanked with our stud rookies. It may be a bit too much too soon, but the ingredients just seem like they would work beautifully.

we can't afford to bring in a better veteran option right now unless a lot of salaries get moved...the plan should be to rotate the kids and let them fight it out. strome starts as the 3RW...but moves to 2c when/if the kids can't handle it or certain situations (same could be said for names but i think he'll be gone). and not cause I think strome will be good in that spot, but because its still a rebuilding team and I don't care if he can handle it cause he's not the real solution

I'd ditch Strome but I think they'll keep him for versatility and room reasons.

And draft pedigree which still matters until guys hit like 28 for some reason even though he's clearly not particularly skilled for a 5th overall.

I don't think strome is at the top of the list of guys to move...but namestnikov provides the same versatility and insure for only $900k more...I'd be names first but if you can't move him and have an offer for strome, that still clears a nice chunk of cap space.

neither is here long term and probably not beyond the trade deadline...but we probably start the year with 1 of them since it would be tough to find a veteran replacement cheap enough to make a real difference to the cap numbers

Shattenkirk and Smith need new homes... probably Kreider too. Retain what is necessary and move on. Package Kreider and Shattenkirk to Colorado. Retain half of Smith and move him to Toronto or Ottawa
