Been a lot made of Strome's high shooting percentage as a Ranger. But if you look at his career stats, the higher shooting percentage essentially meant he ended up equaling his point totals of previous seasons after a horrendous start with the Oilers. Meaning, points wise, the Strome we saw, is the Strome we would roughly get over 82 if he doesn't improve any.
For his career, his underlying possession numbers are actually pretty decent. He's really subpar on faceoffs for his career. Point is, I think too much has been made of his higher shooting percentage. The idea/narrative that we saw Strome playing out of his mind due to his higher shooting percentage seems like an overstatement. He was effective in many other ways besides his 18 goals.
If anything, it seems the youthful players he played with during his time on the NYR last season hurt some of his underlying numbers a bit compared to previous years.
While we do often have a habit of overvaluing some of our own, I do think in this case we are undervaluing Strome and much of it due to the low expectations that came with getting him for Ryan Spooner. Strome isn't the fastest, nor the biggest -- but his hockey IQ is above average and he's an overall effective player and that would hold true regardless of shooting percentage.
Is he overpaid for what he brings? Not really.
Is he a 2nd line center???? That's a different story...
