Rick Nash trade happened in late-July. Jeff Skinner last year was early August. Zibanejad was mid-late July.
Okay I mean that’s three examples but more often then not there’s an initial rush of trades leading up to and a little after the draft.

And then it’s dead for like a month and a half

Suggestion for thread title: Drop the damn puck already, cap breach be damned

18: Skinner early August
17: Nothing
16: Zibanejad mid-late July
15: Bonino for Sutter late July
14: Nothing
13: Perron mid July
12: Nash late July

Seems to me that more often than not, there's some decent trade in this period. I think the time period you're really thinking of is after arbitration and before training camp. We're still a few weeks from that.

What I mean is nobody seems to want to help us with our cap issues.

We're gonna have to give up an asset to move VN.
I could see them having to attach a lower round pick with Vlad to get a higher pick from another team for sure

We’ve been hearing for like a year Vlad has been generating significant interest from teams. And yet he’s still here.

So either
A) The team likes him a lot and they’re not willing to part with him for a small return
B) the reported interest is BS

Either way they gotta move salary

You can't really compare this offseason to off seasons before.

There are a ton of teams in holding patterns for a multitude of reasons (RFA's, teams that need to clear cap, etc.)

There will be a flurry of activity once the first domino falls. That could be later today, that could be a week before camp.

UFA pickins are super slim right now. At wing It's really just Dzingel, Maroon and Pominville. Williams is there too, but its either Carolina or retirement for him.

Here's what's most concerning to me about JP.

In three years- he hasn't put on a lot of muscle or matured physically. I was enamored with him as a 16 and 17 year old in the international tournaments I saw- he dominated. Big, Fast, Skilled, and damn near hard to stop.

EDM- Like usual, rushed him in as an 18 year old. Which has been the same mistake they've been making for 13 years in a row now (dumbfounding).

But JP needed to become stronger to be effective against men, and in 3 years, that hasn't happened.

Simply put, his game from juniors will not translate with a weak skinny frame.

The hockey IQ questions are valid. There's a lack of it.

IMO what JP can be, if he turns things around, is a 3rd line winger that plays on the 2nd PP unit. I don't see a better player than that.

EDM wants a 2nd round pick or use him as currency in a cap dump.

I would say it's a stretch for me to offer a 3rd at this point. Especially after last year.

However, I am more than okay with trading multiple D prospects that are buried in the Rangers line up. Skellberg, Gross & Day for JP and a AHLer.

Where? The last 13 years they have had 7 players get significant time as 18 year olds. Four were number 1 overall picks who always play right away and they were all quite good their first year. One was a number 6 overall pick (Sam Gagner) who had a very good 49 point rookie season. One was a number 3 overall pick (Draisaitl) who they let play 37 games, decided he wasn't ready, and send back to junior, and one was Puljujarvi who played mostly in the AHL. They haven't really rushed their guys more than anyone else.

vancouver could really use that $3 mil in dead space created by luongo retiring...that are alot of things that don't make sense but that cap recapture penalty that retroactively punished teams for signing contracts that were legal at the time is one of the worst

How many teenagers other teams had in the same timeline? You could rank or give a league average.

Obviously other teams have had less teenagers by virtue of not having four number one overall picks, a number three, a number four, and a number six, and a number seven (Nurse who didn't play right away).

I do not have time to go through 10 years of draft data at the moment.

Ferland is a nice pickup for Vancouver. Gives Horvat an actually good linemate. I was just mourning his projected wingers yesterday.

EDIT: 4 years? Oh...okay. Could be ugly. Let’s see what dim jim has up his sleeve.

What is it with Vancouver and handing out multiyear, multimillion dollar contracts to bottom 6 players?

I was all for Ferland on this team before Panarin got signed. Now? No cap space.

Hope he got more than 4 million lol

Vancouver could move Tanev or bridge Boeser if they can't make the money work.

Edit: actually Ferland with Boeser and Goldobin would give them 16 NHL forwards. They probably have a trade line up.

Or they are just gonna demote some guys. They've got 8 guys on defense. Maybe they send Fantenberg or Beiga down if Hughes is ready. Any of Schaller, Leivo and Motte could get the axe too.

I think their plan was just to sign every UFA, but all the good ones were taken. Or Benning just loves depth players and jam. On second thought it’s probably just the latter.

Vancouver signing Ferland makes me chuckle. For a week in April 2015 he was basically Godzilla in that city.
