Interesting thought. That would take....chutzpah...

The one time in my life where I'll blindly accept the overwhelming value of leadership and mentoring for younger players as a reason to keep a player around.

I think his issues the second half of the year last season were mental moreso than physical.

Quinn did ride Hank for a bit but I really think he started to play like crap when the team lost every close game they were in, started to fall out of the race and the whole mood around the team from like January on was basically resigned to the fact that there'd be another sell off. I think that really took a toll on him, he said as much himself.

I really think Hank is going to be much better this season. I think adding Trouba and Panarin will not only make the team better but it will mentally energize him and maybe when they hit a skid next season that feeling of despair won't be there anymore bc now they have a young solid core instead of vets on their way out.
He was down out mentally for me. There were games where he couldn't have stopped a balloon from going in the net. He looked at his wits' end on the bench after being pulled.

I can't imagine anything that would be more hardcore or shocking, really. Do you think the Rangers brass have even uttered the thought?

Hanks not an issue this year. But next year when shesterkin is banging on the door and hank looks more and more like Sam Elliott it’s going to have to be addressed. I honestly don’t think this management team has any interest in losing georgiev or Shesterkin because of Hank.

A Henrik buyout would save

4.25
2.75
-1.75
-1,75

and management would be able to hang onto both young promising 1A/1B on ELCs for the next 2 years.

Hank has trade value, there should be no need to buy him out.

On another subject I gotta tell you I’m watching the breadman doing back flips off a yacht in Capri and then seeing video of Hank in the locker room on a Friday after skating god know how long looking about 50 years old and I have to wonder. Should this guy be on the ice already? Shouldn’t he still be taking it easy? It’s mid July. Even if he ramped it up to start August like should he really be in full pads taking pucks butterflying right now? This is part of his problem at this point in his career he burns out quickly. He started ok then ran out of gas. He wants to play every game and god love him for that. But he can’t anymore and frankly when he doesn’t and he has to sit it hurts him too. But I can’t imagine him really needing to be out there skating right now in full gear taking pucks.

I know half of you will say that’s what makes him a hall of famer and yes that IS what MADE him a hall of famer. That work ethic but he is not 25 or even 30 anymore and you can’t as a goalie push that hard playing that style it’s terrible on your body.

I think sometimes his intensity is his own worst enemy.

Interesting thought!

I was thinking about the captaincy, shouldn’t we make Hank captain? Seems like the best option during the transition period.

The worst team in years, 13-14 Buffalo, still won 26% of the time and got points 38% of the time. No team would become that bad with one injury.

Good point.

One observation I’ve made is that since their is very little sports betting in the US, many don’t realize just how extremely level the playing field always is in the NHL. The numbers are what they are and sure the best teams win a lot more than the worst, but try to pick a winner in a game with money on the line after which the result will impact your wallet, and it’s just so apparent that like all games are close. It doesn’t matter if it’s Tampa vs Ottawa or whatever, sure when a season is over there are some skewed head to heads, but like overall when everything is said and done like 40% of the most tilted match-ups ends with at least a draw...

I agree...

And by the same token, I very much foresee/fear a situation where he has to be forced from the #1 goalie spot. I really hope it doesn’t come to that.

Father time always wins. Hank losing his #1 spot is inevitable. However, I do think he has at two quality years left. Maybe as a 1A/1B in the final year of his deal. What will be fascinating to see is if he hangs it up after this contract or stays on as a backup to keep playing.

he won't waive and at 37, there's some value but not much.

He pretty much lost the net to Georgiev last year, if he sits on the bench long enough he will waive it. Calgary and Vancouver and maybe San Jose with retained salary are teams I'd see wanting Hank. I dont care much about the return but getting his cap off the books would be nice, in saying that I can't see why we couldnt ask for a decent prospect as a return. I dont know if any of that happen because the organization seems to want to keep him happy but I'll be upset if he costs us one of Shestyerkin or Georgiev.

Imo if he wants to continue playing it would be in his best interest to move on via trade because NY wont have interest in him with Shestyerkin, Georgiev and Lindbom in the organization.

lindbom isn't part of the equation and hank will be returned before he is

Lindbom could be anything at this point, but I don’t think he’s even in the stratosphere of being on Hanks radar right know.

Hank @ 50% will get you something good.

Doubt he approves it and I don’t wanna see it. The Leetch deal broke my heart. This would shatter it.

Man, I don’t know why, but Hank doesn’t come close to any of the Cup winners for me. I suppose it’s because I was an adult by the time Hank came around that he never quite became a “hero” to me. Interesting to see someone who experienced the Cup team feeling this way.

Yeah. It could be me, could be that he's a goalie, but for some reason I don't feel particularly emotional about Henrik. Kind of like how I feel about Patrick Ewing. Appreciate and respect them hugely. And in fact they're probably both higher quality humans than some players I "like" more. But like you, my heart will handle The King's abdication whenever it happens.
That said, aesthetically/optically I think Henrik belongs only on the Rangers and I don't want him bought out.

I do remember Hank having a quote this past season about Georgiev deserving the starts he was getting/telling Quinn similar things himself.

I'm not necessarily saying that means anything going forward but I did find that pretty graceful and humble for whatever it might be worth.

I have no doubt Hank will be better with an improved defense and lineup in front of him. He clearly won’t put up special numbers, but he is still good, yet clearly slowing down because of age.

Rangers are in a fortunate spot because they have goalie depth, and it makes sense to split the workload more evenly entering this season. Georgiev, for low, should start at least 25 games. Ideally, Hank plays 50-55.

Keeping the buyout possibility available is wise beyond the utility of the buyouts themselves. Having that safety net means other teams can't completely fleece the Rangers over cap space.

Agreed but I still have a feeling Namestnikov goes for very little kinda like the Vegas Fiala Trade

Buch needs that money , 4 yrs 3.5 per
