Toronto is having that "problem" now. So you trade away one of them for help in other areas. Great
Even then not completely. I mean they had to trade Kadri for a year of Barrie, and obviously paid a pretty big price to unload Marleau ("don't overpay for depth players") but Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, Marner*, Kapanen, Johnsson, Rielly are all there for the next three seasons. *Obviously if Bergevin goes nuts or they lose Marner in some other fashion I will have a serving a crow to eat, but I really don't see that happening.

If at any point Kakko/Kravtsov/Chytil are commanding a combined $30M, well, let the good times roll.

Exactly. We will have the Toronto problem, hopefully without the bad contracts like Zaitsev, Marleau etc

Totally agree. So far gorton has done nothing but excellent work. Some guys are sounding like someone slipped him a micky on 7/1 and all plans went out the window.

Plenty of time to figure it out . I’d rather Smith be dealt but they clearly pointed to the 2nd buyout window if they got their ufa target Panarin

After that Namestnikov May only get a 3rd back but easily moved at 1 year 4 million

if you made it WAR x 1 than you'd change the scale and the bars remain the same side it would just be 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 instead of 100, 150, 200, 250

The difference being something looking “100 different” appears significantly more different than something being “1 different” to someone who doesn’t necessarily fully understand what they are looking at. The difference of their results is within the error of the statistic.

Yep. They are or will take care of their best guys. And the lesser ones will go elsewhere for less than market value. But Lamoriello left their cap in shambles. It's almost like a sabotage except he's doing the same to the Isles. The guy doesn't know when to say when. "oh Leo Komarov? He's great in the locker room. Four years! No trade clause! (Look, were there no salary cap I'm thrilled for Uncle Leo to get all he can but reality bites).

All of those expire in 2021, well before we are in a position to sign our top prospects to extensions

The issue with those contracts is that the Rangers don't get the added benefit of using their highly skilled young players on their ELC's while augmenting their core for the next 2-3 year because of those contracts. Basically, they waste the ELC's of Kakko, Kravtsov, Andersson, Chytil, and others as they are handcuffed from adding due to Staal, Smith, Shattenkirk and Hank.

Not ideal, but it's the world they live in currently.

Well, the high level prospects rarely win Cups while on their ELC. Crosby won his first Cup when he was making 8.7m for instance.

Patrick Kane, Evgeni Malkin and Jonathan Toews are the only ones who really won a Cup on their ELC of the elite prospects

It is what it is. Even without Panarin, that was going to be the case.

american buch jokes aside...even if it shows that they are the same. if we are facing the decision of extending buch (who is 4 years younger) for 1/2 the price compared to kreider than I think equal is good enough

I want to sign Buch long term and trade Kreider. That would have been my plan all along going into the off season.

To be fair the rangers have quite a few horrendous contracts at the moment
You may be a little paranoid. It's not like the rangers have a long and storied history of spending to the cap, being forced into buyouts and signing less than ideal bridge contracts because we can't afford to sign young guys before they break out. If there is a ton of cap in 2021, I'm 100% positive they won't spend every single penny and find themselves in a pinch. Just be confident that the cap will rise tremendously and they will continue to use the same sound judgement with free agents that ranger GM's have always demonstrated.

They do. No doubt about it. Most were signed by the previous regime. What I like about JG is that his two current bad contracts were both limited to four years. If this was Sather, I feel like we would be stuck with Shattenkirk and Smith until 2024.

Haha nice.

Even if we trade Kreider, other pieces need to fall for Buch (or DeAngelo) to sign long-term deals.

I think the majority here would prefer 4+ years for both. Whether that will be possible is another question.

We aren't going to have the Toronto problem when our young studs are t the end of their ELC, the cap will soar and we have all the dead weight gone. Again, this is why it is so important that we do not buy out any of the dead weight now and let their ghosts haunt us down the road. Trade Names, Kreider and one of the RFA's (if need be). JUST SAY NO TO BUY OUTS!

Yeah, my main takeaway is that if Kakko and Kravtsov's play during their ELCs mean they're able to command $10M contracts afterwards, I'm going to want Panarin around during their ELCs.

I think that's the gamble here. Either way it's a win. Having a stud who's won a lot of games on his stick in this league is huge and that is a tremendous understatement.
