What the hell is Chicago doing? Shaw is a good pest but he’s never healthy. That’s the best they could get for that package?

Could be that they looked at filling the role in free agency but saw Shaw as the better option compared to those players and their contract demands.

I’m not avoiding the question

Nill lowballed Zucc. They were apart on both term and money. Zucc made his demands pretty clear. Dallas has the money to pay him what he wanted, and he fit their team well

They can’t come out and say “we don’t want to give up our first this year to get another top 6 forward”.

So they give him a lowball offer that they knew he wouldn’t accept, and they get it to chalk it up to “well we tried but we couldn’t agree on a contract”

And it looks like Pavelski is going to fall into their laps. So they’ll have Pavelski and their first

Ya’ll are naive if you don’t think teams think about this stuff and the consequences

“Hey Mats, it’s Jim Nill. Here’s a four year contract offer but please don’t sign it because we want to keep our first and just want Rangers fans on HFboards to believe we tried to sign you.”

You're making a lot of assumptions in order to back up your point, most of which I disagree with.

Pavelski is also talking to Tampa. It is far from a guarantee that he signs in Dallas.

Would be very fun for us if FLA get Bob & Panarin and NYI misses out on them.
Then Lee and Lehner finds new teams in FA and NYI end up with loosing their 1. goalie and best winger with no replacements...

It was actually two conditional 1st round picks.

As an aside, there was a part of me that was really hoping that the Zucc trade report read that Zuccarello got traded for two conditional 1st round picks with the details to be reported later when the trade happened.

I would have loved to see the roller coaster of comments from a report like that on these boards.
2 conditional 1st round picks that had almost a 0% of happening. Sure they came close to the WCF but it was highly unlikely from the start, and they offered him a contract yes, but they offered him a average one at best, he knows he could get much better on the market. Stars arent going to overpay AND lose out on a 1st.

Look, you win some, you lose some, that trade was a lose trade any way you slice it. Hes a borderline 1st line player and we got a 2nd and 3rd, 2 picks that have a high chance of never sniffing the NHL.

Regardless this board will always be split on this trade, it is what it is.

I think Dallas had the same problem with the contract that Gorton had, it had to be 3 years and not 5.

I'm not upset about the trade at all. I'm just saying I would have loved to see the trade reported as two conditional firsts then the details leak afterwards for the reactions on these boards.

It's pretty satirical how people are still posting about it today. These things are totally out of the Rangers control at this point, so best to sit back and chill.

I mean this take flies in the face of facts, logic and common sense but hey do you I guess.
What's funny is the argument implies the Stars would give Zucc a better deal if there weren't a pick on the line and the deal with no intention of being signed is all about keeping the pick from us

If Lee leaves and Zucc lands on the island, who's going to score goals besides Barzal?

Yeah it’s a ridiculous take from top to bottom.

It kinda seems like he's going to Dallas now.

Matt Duchene or not, expect Predators to do something big - Sportsnet.ca

Friedman last night:
"Over the last 24 hours, there were plenty of rumours Tampa Bay was seeing what it needed to do to move space for Joe Pavelski. But, word late Saturday afternoon was Pavelski initiated talks with Dallas to be his second NHL home."

:dunno:

I think they had no intention to sign him.

No good GM would trade away an unprotected first in a deep draft for Zucc

If the pick wasn’t a condition on him signing, would bet ya he would be signed already

Gorton took a gamble on this one and it didn’t pay off, which is fine. But let’s not joke like the pick wasn’t a massive part in this
In what world is Nill a good GM?

Elliot Friedman: There's mutual interest between Zuccarello and Dallas. I believe they will work out a deal. Isn't that crazy? The Rangers were 1 goal away from getting two first round picks for that trade.

And it would have been an absolute amazing trade had that all worked out. Unfortunately it didnt.
