I think they'd be perfectly happy to keep Kreider until the deadline, even if he isn't in their long plans. This has no basis, but I also think they'd be willing to sacrifice other pieces that could have been long-term (Buchnevich) to do it. Kreider might not be the most consistent player in the world, but he does know how to impose his physical will on the ice. That's a good thing to have around for kids to see. Particularly Kakko.

I get the sense that once the draft came and went, the sense of urgency to move a guy like Kreider diminished a little. I think they'd still prefer to move him, but not just for the sake of moving him either.

Because you are setting yourself up for failure.

He wasn't brought here to score 30+ goals.

He was brought here to do exactly what he has done.

If you are expecting more and he doesn't deliver, you failed at setting your expectations properly.

He signed one of the largest contracts in NHL history. He is supposed to be in his Prime. He scored more than 25 goals every season in the NHL. Why are we settling for less? Bar needs to be set higher, as the contract reflects. He's hit 30 2x in the past 4 seasons. Go get it again.

Strome - 25 years old, drafted 5th overall
18/19 - NYR - 63 gp - 18 g - 15 a - 33pts
3.1m, 1 year RFA

Buchnevich - 24 years old, drafted 75th overall
18/19 - NYR - 64 gp - 24 g - 17 a - 38pts
RFA

Kreider - 28 years old, drafted 19th overall
18/19 - NYR - 79 gp - 28 g - 24 a - 52pts
4.63m, 1 year UFA

I wanna keep all 3.

Strome needs to have a big year if he wants to see another good contract. He has a lot to play for.

The bigger the year Kreider has the more money he makes in 12 months with a big fat contract.

Buchnevich was FINALLY starting to put it together last year. I wanna see him with elite talent.

If it was up to me i’d create space by moving Namestinkov, Shattenkirk, Smith and Staal first.

Staal obviously ain’t happening.

Shattenkirk? Maybe.

Smith? You save what 900k If he plays in Hartford so that is a start.

Namestinkov - Move him. Unless the plan is to play Names beside Panrin and Zibs then move the kid. He can’t do it on his own and he doesn’t make the players around him any better. Yet, I believe a season with say McDavid and i wouldn’t be surprised if he scores 35+ and 70+pts. He’s a perfect superstar supplementary player. Kinda how Luc Robitaille ended up.

Or we could just storm the NHL offices, hold Gary hostage until they agree a 13th hour luxury tax.

I'm more concerned about his point total than goals.

Would you prefer 35/45/80, or 25/65/90?

Do you feel that Panarin changes anything in this regard? How do you see the Rangers clearing room for Trouba and the RFA's?

Personally, I'd think they'd be more inclined to move Names if they can find a match they like.

Buch is a possibility, but I don't know if I see them approaching that deal as a cap clear move. I think they were willing to move Buch in the right scenario for a higher pick in the draft, but I don't know if I see them shipping him out for prospects or TBD draft pick. Likewise, moving him for a similarly aged/priced player at a different position doesn't really help them from a salary standpoint.

I'm also not sure the order is Buch then Kreider. I could see it being the reverse, with Kreider moved before or at the TDL, and Buch being dangled again in the off-season after the Rangers have a better idea of where Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil, and Andersson are in their respective developments.

I tend to agree @Edge.

You trade Namestnikov to someone for a mid round pick that will take on his full salary and buy out Smith (though I disagree with it) and there's your space to bridge Buchnevich and DeAngelo. I think Lemieux will play at his QO next season and they'll go from there.

Maybe JD pushed for Panarin, and it was a calculated hit. But we are paying for it now, and will continue for our next few moves.
Maybe, but I would tend to doubt it. I am sure that the Panarin discussions were had when JD was interviewing and what came on board. I think that where Panarin signed, fell into the range that Gorton had in his head as a move he would make.

Not sure Luc is a good analogy to Names. He was much more than a supplementary player. 12th all time in a goals and he's in the HOF. One of the best goal scorers in our sports history .

Another incredible player who was mediocre as a NY Ranger.
