This is a good point.... I could actually redo my spreadsheet I just did, but buyout Staal first... That would allow you to stuff Smith in the minors for this year, you'd still effectively claim a ton of cap space back. The differences in the buyouts are miniscule over the course of the 4 years

I think if it were strictly a numbers decision, Staal would be the one to get bought out. But I really believe, whatever each of us might think of the players, that the front office views Staal as having more value to the ultimate goal of developing kids than Smith does. And they believe the difference is significant enough to hold onto Staal over Smith.

So, in essence, they're not looking at the decision as Staal vs Smith, but rather Smith-buyout vs Smith-waivers.

I mentioned this a couple days ago but it is getting very late in the summer to not have this shit resolved. We have ALOT to do during a time everyone starts disappearing for summer break in the league. I’m amazed we still haven’t hired a coaching staff for Hartford. And I’m even more amazed we haven’t finalized the trouba deal yet.

I’m shocked that Kreider and Namestnikov we’re still Rangers after the draft.

I’m amazed we didn’t buy out a dman during the first buyout period.

Gorton needs to do better here. He has not done a great job with contracts outside of Mika’s who at the time was pretty much a fair market contract. Skjei getting that big deal was premature.

The smith and shattenkirk deals are choking us.

2 years to spooner and namestnikov made no sense then and make even less sense now. Choking us. 8 mil on the books for Strome namestnikov and Spooner right now. Crazy.

As usual we’re paying our worst players the most of our money. Can we ever have our best players be the guys earning the most? Hopefully panarin changes this trend

For sure.

That’s the one plus of keeping smith around though. Could serve as both the 7th D and 13th F.

Realistically though, that still costs more than it would to have 2 players averaging on $1.25M/player...

Matt Hunwick was our 7th d a few years back, cost $600k. Claesson was our 7th D last year, cost $700k. Any depth forward can be found in free agency for $1.25-1.5M... Total of $2.25M

As I’ve mentioned One of the bigger reasons to keep smith is that we should be able to carry one less guy if he can be a 4th line winger and 7th dman that plays left or right side. He’s also waivable while shattenkirk is not.

It’s very clear the crunch is right now. We need the 5 mil this year from the shattenkirk contract.

Panarin Mika Kakko
Kreider Chytil Buchnevich
Lemieux Howden Kravtsov
Smith Andersson Fast
Nieves

Skjei Trouba
Hajek DeAngelo
Staal Fox
Rykov

For me this would be ideal. Moving Strome and Namestnikov and buying out shattenkirk. Keeping Kreider and Buchnevich who this season would cost less than namestnikov and Strome if that’s even possible to believe.

aren't keeping rykov to sit in the press box he needs to play...and if you are buying out shattenkirk that clears enough space this year that you don't need to move both strome and names. IMO moving 1 of them is a must, but so is keeping one as depth/insurance down the middle.

It clears $1.9 million. How is that hardly any?

It might be easier to move Beleskey than Smith.

Then bury Smith in the minors rather than buying him out.
Ok, but it would take those two, and a few more moves of that nature for us to get out players under contract. I don’t think we have those other options.

We're not competing this year anyway. There's no need for the team to even get under the cap. Just take the penalties and forfeit every game and then be ready to go in 20-21.
Is that actually how it works if you can’t get under cap?

no. if you aren't cap compliment, the league voids every contract you sign in reverse order of the date they were signed (most recent first) until you become compliant and then those players become ufas
