Yes. They score at similar rates and Panarin is much stronger defensively.

??? That's not even remotely accurate. Tavares is a 200 ft. selke top 15 and one of the reasons the Hawks traded Panarin in the first place was they wanted more of a defensive forward. (That's not saying Panarin is bad - but he's not a defensive stud by any means).

And well, they don't score at similar rates either. Tavares pretty much trumps him at every level. Its not really that close.

Its a moot point. Panarin is great, I just am in the camp that its not the right player / right time. I think the windfall of what they could pull in 12-18 months would be incredible.

The dread of hearing the anti-panarins complain

Dumb response.

Yes. At some point you pass. For me, its right around that 12M mark.

I can respect that.

I'm not really in the 'want' camp but from reading a lot of people on here it seems that $10.5 is around the sweet spot, so going to $11 is 'only' 500k more and almost just the cost of doing UFA business. Once it hits 12+ you're now $1.5 above ideal which is starting to get pretty hefty...

Would you want him for that sweet spot?

The Hawks traded Panarin because Towes and Kane missed Saad.

Tavares rates really poorly defensively and teams have historically got tons of chances from in front of the net with him on the ice.

Not sure how they don't score at similar rates.
Tavares/Panarin 5v5 points/60:
This year: 2.87/2.80
Last 2 years: 2.46/2.53
Last 3 years: 2.26/2.40.

Seems extremely close to me. Taares is more of the shooter/goalscorer Panarin is the better playmaker. Tavares also has had better PP numbers but it is very hard to judge by those and the are extremely situation and role dependent.

If we get a Jimmy Vesey buyout, I guess I'm living in a weird world where everyone else's third line forwards are all extremely good and none of them are overpaid

I think he's exactly as valuable of a player as Shattenkirk to the average team, making about a third of the money with no term.

Neither Vesey nor Strome would get bought out. Both players have value. If Gorts is desperate he can retain on them as a sweetener.

Wow, if the NHL needs proof that the distance between the draft and FA is too long, the recent permutations of this thread would certainly offer some.

The writers agree and they're frustrated by it. I think one suggested that the interview period should start after the draft where you have all the GMs in one city for the weekend anyway. Then the players and agents could just talk to teams there. Then have free agency start a few days after the draft but still in late June and not July 1st.

Yeah there’s close to a 0% chance those guys get bought out.
Second time RB has mentioned a Strome buyout. Not sure why. He played well for us after being traded here and he only has 1 year left.

I can see Smith being bought out if Gorts needs space. I think Shatty either builds his value up, or he gets moved for another bleh contract.

GM’s value past production so at 50% he can be an option for some team this season. Hopefully.

Jeez Tavares being selke caliber is news to me
This started a couple years ago. I don’t know what happened. He was always regarded on HF as a forward who literally did not play defense. The same phenomenon occurred with Ovechkin as well.

I saw Panarin make more defensive plays in one shift this postseason than I have ever seen from Tavares.

Haha, ok. Which shift out of curiosity, just so I can pinpoint that exact measurement.

Haven't been on here much lately so not sure if it was mentioned Pierre McGuire hinted at Rangers making a splash (not Panarin). Maybe a RFA? Aho? Marner? I hope not. I like those players a lot but giving up 4 first rounders plus paying 10 million plus (Marner may want more...Aho maybe less???) should not be on our radar.
