It's interesting that they are using Kakko and Kravtsov on LW in the first scrimmage

22. Brooks Orpik, whose outstanding career ended on Tuesday, allowed me to tell a story about him that he asked I keep secret for 11 years.
As free agency arrived in 2008, Orpik was being pursued by the Rangers and his Penguins, among others. He was juggling offers and heard New York signed Wade Redden, so he figured the Rangers were out. He called Glen Sather to thank him for his interest, assuming there was no more room for him and re-signing with Penguins. (He may have gone back to Pittsburgh anyway, but that was the clincher.) Not long after, his phone rang. It was Sather, who was not pleased. He wanted both Orpik and Redden. When he told the story, Orpik couldn’t stop laughing at Sather’s reaction. “I can’t explain it in a conversation.”

Oh, Glen.

There's only one reason col didn't trade for CK. Cause sakic is a ***** GM.

He's not very good at evaluating talent and it has to be a complete no brainer for him to pull the trigger.

GM's like him will never win.

There is nothing wrong with that. It is how you avoid the garnering the reputation of a Chiarelli, Cheveldayoff, Boterill type GM.

So to summarize, he is a ***** GM because he did not do what you wanted him to do?

No. Because as a GM you have to give your team the best chances to succeed. If that means trading for a unknown kid for an establish NHL player who will help you win, you do it 10 out of 10 times.

Unless you're a HF GM where picks are more valuable than established nhl players.

What makes you think he does not believe that he is already doing so or has a strategy in mind? Just like Gorton.

Then why not run out and sign someone to an offer sheet and loose 4 first rounders? Get someone like Tkazchuk or Point. Established players are more valuable than draft picks, right? Or trade next year's first for Malkin?

Nothing wrong with being cautious. Agreed. But eventually you can't be scared to make a move.

It's like saying, existing is safe. Living life can be dangerous.

Cause his history as a GM dictates that?

Apples and oranges. Sakic didnt need to relinquish 4 1's for CK. It was the 16th overall. Come on. You're better than that.

Maybe he’s waiting to see what happens with Bob and Panarin. They need a goalie and Panarin on that first line would be unworldly. They’ve made surprise buddy signings in the past with Kariya and Selanne.

But you cannot ignore the fact that Sakic may have not wanted to relinquish the pick and may be betting that he can get Gorton's price to drop after the draft.

Random question:

When was the last time we signed/drafted someone from the Kitchener Rangers? No uniform adjustment there!

last draft pick was Wes Jarvis in 1997. i think matt puempel or steve eminger were the last players...

and its not just coincidence that the jersey is the same...they were a farm team of the NY rangers until 1967

He could, but he would bet wrong.

Teams will be more willing to give up a draft pick that is 11.5 months away from being used than one that is 11.5 hours away from being used. They'll have extra time to recoup that pick and if it falls apart, Kreider should be pretty valuable on the market come TDL.

There were other teams sniffing around over there so even if it isn't Colorado (and I have a tough time seeing the deal as CK for 16 1 for 1, I bet there was more there) they'll find a taker and do well.

Anyone have any interest in Markus Granlund? the lesser Granlund, who was not qualified by Vancouver.

When was the last time COL signed a big time FA?

The last time it happened, sakic was still playing and not a GM.

I'm not ignoring the facts. Im actually looking at them.

If im a betting man then i betting that Gorton gets his price before he becomes inpatient and meets Sakic's demand at a lower price.

Not being confrontational. Just history of the 2 said GM's shows a pattern.

My guess is that it had more to do with Newhook being available at 16, and them being as high on the player as many of us were.

That is most likely the case. And that's my entire argument. Even with newhook being available at 16, hes what? 2,3,4 years away from real contribution?

Col is in win now mode. You pull the trigger on getting help now to win now.

If Colorado wants to be in for Panarin or Pavelski, they're better players than Chris Kreider. Zuccarello is about as good.

These teams were watching the draft board, I know there was a lot of stuff about Broberg and the Oilers. If "your guy" is still on the board, you don't need to trade him.
