I dont think Lundvist played bad last year. And I don't think Giorgiev was that much better. I could be wrong about that. Hank played more games so it's harder to maintain a higher level and I also think the team plays differently (worse)in front of him. Some people have this narrative that hes getting to be a bad goalie but it's hard to maintain stats when the team sucks. He has declined (and so you have to weigh in on his salary) but not to the extent some make it out to be.
Yeah, Hank is no longer Vezina level Hank anymore but he's not garbage like some think he is.

His play really went down hill after the trade deadline, he looked great for the first half of the season. It's pretty clear his issues were mental.

Georgie on the other hand was horrible the first half of the season and then showed great progress and looked great for the last 6 weeks or so.

I think jumping to conclusions too much either way is dangerous. Most likely scenario is that Lundqvist isn't as bad as he was to end the season and Georgiev isn't as good as he was to end the season. He's most likely not a .930 goalie and Hank most likely isn't a .900 goalie or whatever their numbers were the last 6 weeks.

@Edge Friedman reporting the hold up between Colorado and Kreider wasn’t the 16th pick as you reported. Nicely done. Colorado didn’t want to give it up deal between them most likely dead. Also doesn’t believe panarin to Colorado is even a thought. He was the last one to put this out there but he also believes it’s Fla or one of the NY teams for panarin.

So it’s fla or us
I wonder what Colorado wanted to give up for CK if they didn't want to move 16.

I'm now leaning towards not signing Panarin. I think a Panarin contract is just too risky before we know how some of the kids turn out.

The biggest issue with a Panarin deal is the precedent. What happens in 3 years if Kravtsov and Kakko are viewed as equally important as Panarin? How are we going to pay 3x 12m contracts on the same team -- and on 3 wingers no less. That's the pretty much the issue plaguing the Leafs. The Matthews contract meant Nylander and Marner would need to get paid in a similar stratosphere. It meant having to give up a first rounder just to dump Marleau's 10m.

This is also why I've come around on the idea of trading Kreider in addition to no Panarin. With the D now flush, the Rangers need to build out the rest of the young forwards. Trades involving Kreider, Vesey and Namestnikov should be about bringing in young forwards and picks. (and in some cases, opening up Roster spots). Kreider and maybe Buch and Lundqvist are the last 3 chips we can use to stock up on young assets (aside from slowly building through draft).

On a completely separate note. There are lots of different lessons you can take from this years playoffs. Here's one take I haven't really heard. While it's a fact that the Blues and Bruins were the two heaviest teams in the playoffs, one could argue that the thing that really set them apart from the rest of the league was the strength of their Defense corps to get the puck out of their own zone. Both teams had multiple big-bodied skilled defensemen that had the ability to stop the forecheck dead in its tracks and get the play going back the other way.

Neither team was particularly deep when it comes to elite forwards. One could argue that both were really one-line teams. But both teams were really deep on the back end. From that perspective, the Rangers rebuild seems better than most teams. They are really flush with different types of D-men at this point. Small skilled puck movers (TDA, Fox, Lundkvist, Reunanen, Jones) and Large Bodied, strong skating, skilled guys (trouba, miller, skjei, robertson rykov, hajek). If one or more of these kids really peak offensively -- then we could very well have a d core that rivals the SC Finals teams from this year.

That has been part of my thoughts all along

The Tavares signing influenced the Matthews signing, which influenced the Nylander ask, which influences what Marner is asking for, and it just keeps going down the roster on that teams salary/cap hit structure.

(To be clear for anyone who's confused, this is a typo. Kovy's giving a genuine compliment here.)

Any of the beat writers covering the prospect camp? They have a scrimmage today and i've heard nothing. Not surprising.

Wait what? If the 16th wasn't the hold up what was the deal breaker on the deal that made it fall through?

The Avalanche were unwilling to include their 16th pick (Alex Newhook) in last week’s draft for Chris Kreider, so it is unlikely that gets re-visited especially since he’s up in a year.

Which make sense to me given I never believed Kreider could return a pick in that range one for one.

I got my hopes up a little around Friday but yea, in months prior and in hindsight not shocking that he didn’t have that value especially in the current climate.

At this point don’t see how the high point of value isn’t the 2020 TDL. Which creates a few risks and complications for JG.

I will be honestly surprised if he doesn’t break camp with the NYR.

I tend to agree. Kreider probably should command the same package as Hayes (which was a playoff pick + decent prospect). I don't understand why some think Kreider is far more valuable than Hayes.

Hayes puts up just as many points. He plays a more critical position. Kills penalties and is a pretty good defender. He's a better overall player than Kreider.

A Lundqvist buyout next year would save 3 million for that year, but cost 1.5 million against the cap the year after

I would take a lesser package for Kreider for now than hold on to him until the deadline and risk him getting injured during the season which would send his value to 0.

Less about cap savings and more about having your two young guns split the ice and have one emerge as the guy. Shesterkin May be ok in Hartford for now but that will not last long.

I was always of the opinion that it would take an overpay for the Rangers to move up even from #20 and I had no speculation that one for one he'd return a pick which could be used on a certain tier of prospects, Newhook being one of them.

I, as cordially as I could, took the flack for that opinion.

I think if the Rangers want a 1st for him, the deadline is when those are sometimes available for a player without term. I do not think they want to be in that situation, so I think it's plausible they find some other deal, yet I'm not too sure there is anyway it can include a 1st at least without some conditionals attached.
