During the UFA listening period, can we negotiate with Zucc on behalf of Dallas?

You mean, try to talk to Zucc into signing with Dallas? There probably isn't a specific rule against it, but it's probably not very kosher either. Regardless, we wouldn't do it.

Please define WAR. I’m sure it’s good. I’m old school and go by what I see on the ice and read from our posters.
WAR stands for wins above replacement. It's basically meant to estimate how many more wins a team will have with that player vs if you replace him with the average AAAA call-up. It's a great concept that I believe has worked very well in baseball. I'd recommend taking it with a few grains of salt in hockey, however– especially for this projected WAR for prospects.

Where the prospect camp held?

Was in a Stamford hotel this morning and saw a bunch of dudes in Rangers shirts moving in tons of boxes. Looked like stuff for meetings in one of the conf rooms. Weren’t players- but staff for sure.

It's not as bad as you think. As of right now, this is our dead cap space:

2019-20: 5.336 mil (Girardi 3.611, Spooner .9 and Beleskey buried at .825)
2020-21: 1.111 mil (Girardi)
2021-22: 1.111 mil (Girardi)
2022-23: 1.111 mil (Girardi)

However, if you add Shatty's cap hit to that, you get:

2019-20: 5.336 mil + 6.65
2020-21: 1.111 mil + 6.65
2021-22: 1.111 mil
2022-23: 1.111 mil

If we buyout Shatty, the dead cap space would be:

2019-20: 6.819
2020-21: 7.194
2021-22: 2.544
2022-23: 2.544

The costs next year are comparable, even if you factor in a cheap replacement player. In 2021-22, Hank, Staal and Smith come off the books. 2.544 in dead cap won't be a big deal. By 2022-23, when Kakko and Kravtsov are up for new deals, the cap should go up from the new TV money.

This also doesn't factor in potential trades of Kreider, Names, Buch or Vesey.

The point is that buying out Shatty doesn't really hurt us. Of course, this is predicated on us not being able to find a trade partner. If we trade him at 50% with no other money coming back, the dead space would be:

2019-20: 8.661
2020-21: 4.436
2021-22: 1.111
2022-23: 1.111

So we'd have less cap space this year, but more over the next 3 years.
I'd still like them to give Shattenkirk a chance to turn it around. Assuming Smith is playing fwd, having Shattenkirk and Staal as vets isn't a problem, for me.

Protected firsts are not going away. No one ever wants to end up like Ottawa.

My solution is a backup exchange...if first is deferred, get a second from then that year and then repay them with a second when the first is conveyed.

I don’t want to wait forever for some return on a deal that important.

A good business person would never do something like this. It's completely inappropriate and would very likely be looked at by both players and management as unprofessional and out of line.

Not only am I sure the Rangers wouldn't engage in such practices, but I'm rather confident anyone who did, would quickly be out of the league.

The NHL is not the real estate business.

Question on Developement camp. Do the Rangers pay for their travel? Say we drafted a player from Sweden in the 6th and he didn’t come to Vancouver. He has a day to catch a flight to NY to get to camp?
If the player is coming to Rangers camp they must have some sort of agreement in place. So I'd assume travel, meals, lodging are all covered.

I was thinking something along those lines.

If the acquiring team wants the 1st protected and deferred to the following year, then they should have to include a 2nd round pick that year regardless. You want to make a team wait then you pay more. Same as paying to have a team take on your bad contracts.

Interesting.

I was thinking Zucc just might turn things on their head and let the Rangers know he's interested in resigning w us.

Now wouldn't that be funny?

I think Zucc is very much done with the Rangers organization. He was not happy about how it ended. It sucks but it had to happen, the team is going in a different direction. He doesnt have the legacy or importance that Hank has. Also didnt have a NMC

I completely understand that it's more money for us for the next two years. My point is that these two years are rebuilding years still and although the cap hit is higher we are not making the playoffs yet. We are still a bottom half NHL team. After those two years of Smith Staal and shatty, I do believe our talent will mature and with making the right trades we will begin to be cup contenders. During which time I dont want 3m in dead cap space. That cap isnt increasing as much as we thought and now is being talked about being set at 83m for the next 2-3 years. I dont want to be the maple leafs who are running around with an incomplete team and no cap space. I want to be the Bruins who dont have any of these problems, have cap space, and have a team that's able to compete for the cup year after year

In my eyes I want all that buyout cap space off the books so we can use our full cap on helpful players on our team.
Totally agree. If Shattenkirk, Smith, or Staal truly shit the bed this season, they can be bought out next summer pretty painlessly. But I think those guys all have some value still and aren't major blockers, at least yet. Were any of those guys malcontents, it might make sense to get rid of them sooner. But I don't get that feeling.

Well, he had a chance to turn it around this past year and didn't. If he is going to turn it around this year, that means he'll need playing time. If Fox needs to start in Hartford, fine, but what if he's ready? How do we divide the starts so that Shatty can showcase himself, yet we don't negatively impact Fox's development? At the end of the day, Fox's development is more important that Shatty's shot at redemption.

If we can't find a taker for Shatty and we don't need the cap space for another move, by all means keep him for a year and hope that he can be moved next summer.
