The FA centers are all terrible and none are worth bringing in for any amount that can't just be sent to the AHL in full. I'd rather just sign back Peter Holland or Mark Letestu or someone like that who can be a good 1C in the AHL and come up if someone gets hurt.

the way that JD raved about letestu i'd be surprised if we aren't after him...but for hartford

Pavelski will be 35 in less than 3 weeks. He has over 1,100 games on his resume. This is likely the last contract he signs. I can see some stupid team going 6M X 4 for him.

No reason for him to come here. Gorts isn't going to give him a retirement contract. And we're not contenders.

I see the need for a 2C, but I also see us with young options. Pass on Spezza. Play the kids. Give Chytil a serious look for more than a handful of games. Play Andersson there. If they both fail, see how Kakko and Kravtsov look. If they fail, move up Strome. Or Howden.

Chytil will be 20 when the season starts. Andersson turns 21 in Oct. Howden is 21. These kids need to play. It's their time right now. I 100% believe in insulating kids until they're ready, but I feel all three of them are.
Agree with all of this... I think this is our last "pass" year where management is ok missing the playoffs, but with sights of contending in 20-21. Let the kids play it out and see what you have to know where the holes are once we're ready to go.

Pavelski on a 2-3 year contract would be fine.

Even if his game starts to slip, he can slide into the 3C role, swapping with one of our young kids when they are ready for the 2C slot.

Pavelski is Plan B to Panarin imo.

His contract would also be shorter in length which would fit better for when we need to pay out kids.

But i also dont find it likely he would choose the Rangers over a contender. However, him being a Center and the quality of player he still is would be a great addition.

Yup, Pavelski checks boxes on a lot of requirements for the Rangers if Panarin signs elsewhere. Would he be interested? Marleau signed with Leafs in more or less the same stage of their rebuild, no?

What boxes? Old? Injury prone? Expensive? On the downside of his career? Seems like the exact opposite type of player the Rangers are looking for.

If you want to create cap space, trades only really work if you get back assets that aren't counting against the cap. How is what I said "not true"?
OK, just saying... I think the idea "trades don't work" in creating cap space if cap comes back COULD be erroneous. A smart trade could save costs and make the team better. Works for me!

Remind me what happened with Marleau? What did he do in Toronto?

Why can't we learn from our mistakes? Or from other teams mistakes?

Like Berserk mentioned, he's the opposite of what Gorton has been looking for since taking over here.

Hmmm. Maybe youre thinking of someone else. I mean you must be. Because his GP the last 5 years starting at age 30:

82
82
81
82
75

Doesnt sound injury prone to me.

His point production has been between 65-70 points the last 3 years. He has been around there most of his career with the exception of his 78 point season in 15-16 and 79 point season in 13-14. Pretty consistent production.

If youre going to be condescending at least get your facts straight.

I don't think Gorton is going to let it linger until the trade deadline. This team has gone through that the last 2 years and it's hard on the players. We might be able to get a bit more at the deadline, but Gorton will take the best deal he can find this summer and move on.

I’m not so convinced. But we will see I guess.

Kreider as a playoff rental may be worth a lot more than he is in any other situation.

He will be playing for his next contract.

The cap came in lower than the contender probably like, at the deadline his cap hit would be prorated and the Rangers could probably retain on top.

The 2020 draft I think has more depth to the talent

Plus maybe they can combine him with any of the other pending UFAs to get a higher value return as they too will have prorated cap hits, and should the Rangers have enough retention spots, they could retain there too.

He could even decide he wants to extend upon trade increasing his value.

That also likely excludes them from spending more than they should this summer.

I think that all outweighs the Rangers feeling the sense that having a pending likely outgoing rental is difficult on the player(s)/teammates especially if the other option is to take less than he'd likely return next deadline.

You know what Marleau did in Toronto? He was an AMAZING mentor to Matthews and Marner. Regardless of how he was on the ice, that was huge for Toronto and can't be overlooked as part of his value.

Some food for thought from the athletic:

Artemis Panarin
Projected Contract: $11.2M x 8 years (Columbus only)
With Erik Karlsson off of the market, Artemi Panarin is now alone at the top of the class as this year’s most prized offering. No other player available impacts the game more than Panarin who has seen a meteoric rise to superstardom since coming over to the NHL four seasons ago. In that time he has 320 points in 322 games. Only seven other players have scored more points in that time frame. He’s incredible with the puck leading to elite zone exit and entry numbers that make him an excellent play-driver. Panarin is elite, and at 27, is still young-ish for an unrestricted free agent.

Panarin is the type of player where a big money, long-term commitment won’t lead to much regret. It’s very rare that a player of his caliber even makes it to the open market to begin with, a player that legitimately moves the needle and can elevate a team to the next level. He’s worth it.

Still, as with all UFAs, his best days are likely behind him (unless he ages better due to starting his NHL career just four years ago, which is possible), and as long the team signing him understands that there should be no issues. My model expects a three-to-four year window where Panarin provides elite value before a slow decline in his 30’s. Even then, Panarin should still be a top line player for the entirety of his contract.

Top-10 in games played since 2011, but sure

Furthermore Pavelski, aside from his 1st year, has played 917 out of the full 950 games in his career.

He is and has been a .79 PPG player, which equals to about 64 points per season. He has been very consistent.

Again, he may not have any interest in signing here, but lets not make shit up and talk out of your ass.

And despite being an AMAZING mentor, Toronto just moved their 1st round pick to get his ass off the team.

They also just dealt a 1st to dump Marleau’s contract.

I love Pavelski and I’d take him for 1-2 years at his age/mileage, but some team will give him 3-4 years at a high rate.
