Since last night, the ball has tended to be in the other team's courts. Not to say negotiations can't/won't continue, but I feel like the Rangers have outlined some structures and expectations.
Remember, in every single instance, they're are the team giving up guys who have at least shown they are NHL players. We can talk about the value of high picks, or former high picks, or prospects until we're blue in the face. They're still unknown quantities.
When you start talking about combos of Buch and Names, you're still talking about 30 goals and 70 points combined. In the right environment and with room to grow, you're talking about sending another team 45 goals and 100 points.
Same with Buch and Vesey, a combo that's at roughly 40 goals/ 70 points right now, and maybe in the 50/100 range in the right setting elsewhere.
Then consider that while we all have our favorites for players we'd love to draft, you're most likely not getting that kind of production back straight-up --- now or five years from now. So while some will swear that their team "can't give up a high pick", there's often a little bit of overestimating on their part. That's why fans end up balking at the notion of a pick and a prospect. They assume the production of the pick is a given --- especially in the midst of draft fever as I like to call it.
