That's not how it's supposed to work though, you're not supposed to decide what's okay and what isn't based on how it feels.
There's a CBA. Per the CBA you're eligible for an emergency recall if you play 1 game dressing fewer than 18 skaters and 2 goalies as a result of not having the cap space to replace injured, sick or suspended players in the lineup and dress 18 available skaters. After one game you're supposed to be eligible for an emergency recall.
How you ended up not having the cap space to recall a player is irrelevant.
If the NHL said the reason the Rangers were not entitled to an emergency recall for last night's game was bc they technically made the Kane trade on Wednesday so they started that day with enough cap space to recall a player but then made the trade and took the cap space away making it their own fault -then fine that explanation makes sense for why they didn't get an emergency recall for last night's game.
But on Thursday they started the day without enough cap space to recall anyone so they player Thursday night with only 17 skaters dressed with the players who did not play being ineligibile due to injury/illness/suspension. Per the CBA they should be allowed an emergency recall of a player making 800k or less for tomorrow's game.
