The absolutely proper lines to start should be:
Panarin-Trochek-Tarasenko
Kreider-Zibanejad-Kane
Lafreniere-Chytil-Kaako
Motte-Goodrow-Vesey
If needed, the swap to make is Kane --> Kaako
I mean a number of line combos could work. Really dont know.
But I agree with this as it makes the most sense
Panarin-Trochek-Tarasenko
Tarasenko needs someone to set him up and a center that can move through the D and get deeper into the zone, thats Panarin driving that line and Trocheck pushing the pace. All 3 can score. They should improve as Tank gets more comfortable. If Panarin shows he is willing to continue to play physical and do what it takes to win (I've seen a willingness) it will be infectious and the entire lineup will follow suit. Tarasenko could surprise people with his postseason play (its a completely different game and players like Tank, imho, not only rise to the occasion but also flourish when the intensity ratchets up) and we all know how Trocheck elevates his game in the postseason with his physicality and effort. Thats what they brought him in for.
Kreider-Zibanejad-Kane
Mika and Kreider have the connection, Kreider (when on) can force the pace and stretch the ice with his speed. Mika knows how to activate that part of his game. Mika is also as excellent a two-way center the Rangers have so it makes sense to pair him Kane whos defensively deficient. It allows him to do his thing and create. Kreider will also be conscious of that in his own zone which allows Kane to transition quicker. Kane is the distributor on that line and is saavy enough to maximize both Mika and Kreid's game. (one-timers, deflections, plays to the net). That could be an exciting line that you can trust going up against the other teams best.
Lafreniere-Chytil-Kaako
We all know what this line can bring. Minutes on end in the zone possessing the puck. And thats what this team needs. Keep the play on the right side of the ice, create havoc, chances, some goals. But at the very least, in the other zone and not in your own. Lafreniere showed he can throw the body around and theyll count on him to be physical on that line. If the other two can do a little bit of that too, that line will be hard to defend and wear down the opposition. We all know Chytil shoots a ton and we are starting to see Laf as well. Would love to see Kakko start taking it to the net more in that bullish manner. His mission should be to make a move or two to shake loose and then get inside to the middle of the ice, or just shoot it on net. Both Laf and Chytil are circling around like sharks looking for lose pucks and rebounds. Just get it on.
Motte-Goodrow-Vesey
This may become the most valuable line on the team in the playoffs if these guys could stay on the ice. All 3 are good penalty killers, Motte is exceptional with his stick in all zones. He also gets pucks to the net. All 3 can finish, and Vesey has the skill to set the other two up with tap ins. Their assignment will be to play a hard game, on the body finishing checks, forechecking and keeping the puck out of their net. If they can do that and also pop in a few it will not only provide more energy to the team it will also allow Gallant to roll all 4 lines with confidence and that will keep the forwards fresh in what will hopefully be a long postseason, with some long OT play very likely.
