The interesting thing when GMs come out and say stuff about their decision making process it kind of puts in perspective that a lot of these guys aren’t any smarter than we are. More knowledgeable? Sure. But their logical arguments are never something I’d give an A+ too on an undergrad paper
The thing is, in this instance I don't think he's wrong.
The Tampa window is gonna close very soon. Maybe they have one, maybe two more runs in them. And then they fall back into that 2nd rung or 3rd run of playoff team. Right now, I'd say they're in a tier right below the Bruins with about 6-7 other teams with a legit chance to win.
But they're aging out of their window fairly soon.
So, to mortgage their future to go for it a few more times with this group, it makes sense given their timing.
If Drury came out and said this I'd be livid. Because I think we're still towards the front of our window. Though if Laffy, Kakko and Chytil don't become 1st line players in 2 years. And if one or two don't become true team leaders, it's even worse. Thats why we need to protect our best prospects and a good chunk of our first rounders. Those are cheap, hopefully talented assets that we will likely really need in 2-3-4 years to be a contender. Either to fill in the bottom or to replace a Panarin, A Trouba, A Kreider or even Shesterkin or who knows.
Point is, I think it really depends on where your team is at. Keep in mind, if the TB window closes a bit sooner than expected -- they have Hedman, Point, Vasy, Kucherov as assets that will return those 1st and 2nd round picks. In addition, they'll have Jeannot, Paul, Cirelli and on very reasonable deals that other teams might covet in 2-3 years. It's actually very sound logic to give up more of the future for the right now for TB.
