I hope we can move on from Gallant sooner than later. Would love to hire Brunette
I think Brunette is romanticized just a bit. My cat could have gotten a ton out of the Devils forward group. They have speed 1-12 and skill 1-9. Versatility and instant chemistry all over the lineup.

The way those forwards developed versus the way ours developed is where I think we need to target change.

Is your cat available for the months of April-June? A certain cigar loving old man is wondering.

I would 100% go five forwards before putting any of our defensemen besides Fox out there but they won't do that.

Assuming a defenseman has to be out there, I would gone with this

PP1: Zibanejad, Kreider, Trocheck, Tarasenko, Fox

This unit entirely runs through Fox with no confusion. He has a one-timer on both sides and plenty of presence in the slot.

PP2: Kane, Panarin, Chytil, Laf, Trouba

Let Kane and Panarin play catch on their own unit. Don't have to share the puck with Fox. Trouba never has to pass with those two on the ice. Laf and Chytil can switch between net-front and bumper because imagine movement? Shocking development.

Average it out to a minute each.

I literally laughed out loud with that. lol.

But I do like that top unit you posted.

A good way to change development is not relegating 1 and 2 overall picks to 3rd and 4th line duties, benching them, and cutting their balls off every time they do... something, good or bad.

I get the school of thought of letting them figure it out, but in my opinion, the PP1 we've been running since Kane got here can't be figured out. It fundamentally doesn't work.

Zibanejad is the clear shooter and there's nowhere for him to set up with Panarin, Kane, and Fox on the ice.

Like I said, I would still move things, and my new concern is that one of Panarin, Kane, or Fox has to actually shoot for once on that unit, but maybe this gets them out of the covid circles and forces them to actually get a look.
Thats fine, but it remains to be seen if its a good decision to move two of the top 3 NHL PPG producers over the past 3 seasons off of the first unit.

I dont usually like to mess with success.

Mika and Kreids have more PPGs than McDavid, Pastrnak, Matthews, etc etc. Would any of those dudes be put on PP2? Regardless of the talent around them? lol

I think it remains to be seen if there's an actually hierarchy here and not split time. If there is, that would be extremely dumb.

This is a cute story and stuff but none of this happened. They get more ES icetime than guys like Zib and Kreider.

What the f*** is this? The players choose the lines?

We knew Gallant was a cheerleader when we brought him in.

If NYR don't make the semifinals at least this season, he's gone, so I wouldn't worry. This is his measuring stick.

Well one unit has Adam Fox and one has Trouba, and that's a pretty big gap to overcome. Like going from Al MaInnis to Adam Foote

That is an inherent hierarchy, yes.

I would have liked to see more flair on PP2 for that reason.

But you pretty much summed it up with the "cheerleader" comment so here we are.

If we don't make the semis then we have more problems than just the coaching staff.

If you like early playoff exits then yeah, hes a great hire.

Problem with letting go of Gallant is who is out there to replace him? Quenville is a fit but hes got too much baggage but aside from that I'm not really seeing a ton of good options. Right now the best play is to probably wait a year and see if Tampa ends up deciding that they want a different voice than Cooper, but even that seems unlikely.

The other answer is to fire the current assistants and get better ones.

Trouba: 21.7 shot attempts/60 at 5v4 this year
Fox: 21.2 shot attempts/60 at 5v4 this year

Trouba probably has more point slap shots though.
Yes and fox has considerably more time set up in formation at the blueline since a huge chunk of trouba's pp time is just getting the puck into the offensive zone, which would, presumably, impact the per/60 rates in favor of fox--and trouba still shoots more.

Its a cute and true story. Don't know what to tell you. And what you said has been proven false in the other thread. They do not get more even strength ice time. And they sure as hell get nowhere near the PP time.

He was being double shifted.
With Goodrow and Vesey. Not players known for their offensive acumen.

f***ing bananas that people think Lafreniere gets sufficient ice time LMFAO. 16 minutes is not sufficient. And he's still producing. Everyone's new love child Stutzle gets over 20 minutes and top PP minutes. Huge f***ing difference. But don't let facts muddle narrative.
