"Our coach never adjusts"

*coach makes an adjustment*

"Hey that isn't what I wanted"

What do you expect? Gallant to read these boards and take your suggestion on PP construction?

The problem with this adjustment is that he's making adjustments to an area that has been working for the team. Thats been par for the course with him this year and the worst part of it is that his line of thinking is probably that he's going to force chemistry by putting his top 6 units together at ALL times, even though no amount of ice time is going to keep them from being the wrong mix.

Since the new year, only 6 teams have scored more PPG than the Rangers. Of those 6, 4 of them have done so with more TOI on the PP. Their per 60 rate is top 5 in the league since 1/1 IIRC. Why Gallant insists on changing things that are working is beyond me.

So PP1 will try to pass the puck into the net while PP2 will be lucky to make a zone entry.

Good plan.

At least use Fox on both units if you're going to try something this idiotic.

He’s trying things in practice. Maybe in games. Probably means more balance in PP time. Isn’t that what people wanted?

People have complained that the PP wasn’t working well enough. People complain about everything but when something new is tried IN PRACTICE they start shitting all over GG.

Maybe let’s see how it goes.

absolutely no one wanted this.

People want a different look at 5v5. Not only did we not get that, he doubled down and put those bad 5v5 lines as the PP units. It's quite amazing tbh.

I actually was expecting this since we added Kane and Tarasenko, had to fit them into the units. My only issue is with Mika being moved down to the 2nd unit with Trouba. Unless Gallant is going to run a 1A and 1B type PP, you are reducing the time from our most dangerous weapon on the PP.

It's frustrating that he didn't adjust the 5v5 lines but I said it yesterday I didnt think he would. Maybe if they struggle against Montreal he will.

How the hell is a guy with 19 PPG on PP2? Gallant should've just stuck 10 in the bumper and 93 back on the circle. This is nuts.
If they are splitting the time close to a min apiece having Zib on "PP2" means he's out against either the SECOND tier penalty killers or a tired first tier unit...

He won't do it.

This is going to be the one time he displays patience. Even if he does eventually change things up and land on combos that work, he will revert right back to this BS the second the team has a tough 40.

Trouba will carry it up ice and drop it to either Fil or Mika I would assume. As far as the QB I think it will run through Zibanejad, he will have the puck on his stick the most.
problem is the second unit will get about 20-30 seconds at most and that is with the puck about 200 feet away from the opposing net. No way Panarin and Kane gonna be on for 1 min to 1 min and 15 seconds and then make sure they get off.

Absolutely no reason to change the 5v5 lines after two games. Not nearly enough time to decide whether they are good or bad. As for changing the PP...so what? There's 20 games left and they're basically locked in. It's a good time to try things out so you know what you have if things aren't working or someone gets hurt and you need to change it up.

Yeah better give these coaches 45 games before they can lift a finger and actually do something

Just not sure how that works in the real world. Most of the time the first unit is out ther for at least 90 seconds. I just dont see Panarin and Kane rushing off at 60 seconds.

Mika was elite on the PP even before Fox and Panarin showed up, so I would not worry about him, same for Kreider. I would use Miller though in that situation at the top.

Looking at the way this is set, Kane is running PP1 and it would not shock me if Zibanejad is running PP2.

Never gonna happen you’re putting your biggest pp weapon and Mika is. He’s one of the best pp guys in the league over the past 3 years essentially on the bench for Kane. That should not be happening.

Kane coming here was supposed to be cherry on top. Not throw your best player off powerplay 1. Insane decision. Insane

I would not put a lefty on the point on whatever unit Mika is on if he's in the left circle

Fair enough, but if that's what the coaching staff wants... In any case, I'm not sure how anyone arrived at which unit was PP1 and which was PP2. Did Gallant make a decree? Hahaha. I can see it being situational, who is fresh, etc. One way or the other, there's two potentially dangerous units there, and one will be facing 2nd tier PKers... for whatever amount of time.
I think its a thing to try out and see. Plenty of time before the Playoffs.

very dumb decision I agree. It won't last long. Mika will be back on the first pp probably by games end vs Montreal. Even if the new pp does work against a tanking Montreal he can't be stupid enough to keep Mika off long term.

It'll be nice to get a more even split between the two pps. I don't think Mika/Kreider will be happy with not getting close to a full minute on the pp so I expect to see a good split. I'd rather run five forwards or Fox for the full two minutes than having Trouba or Miller on pp2.

I'm ok with giving the 5v5 lines another two or three games. Even if they end up gelling I would be down to give a Kane/Tarasenko swap a few games as well. Let the top two lines get comfortable with different players because lines will be juggled in the playoffs. Rangers don't have much to play for so it's a perfect time to build chemistry.
