Do we really need points that don’t bring much else to the table?

I gained a newfound appreciation for Ryan Strome this year, but if we’re gonna compete we need a different dimension behind Zibanejad, rather than slower, worse Zibanejad.
We don't at all.

In a down year, we were 10th in goals; 8th at even strength.

I don't love Strome, and think there's some pretty big holes in his game, but this fanbase seems to consistently write off his points. Yes he benefits from playing with Panarin, but he is a far cry from just a passenger. The bolded is a fairly big assumption that seems primed for a let-down if you ever got your wish.
I write off all points but we need a center, whether its Strome or someone else who thinks the game similar to Panarin.

Nobody thinks the game similar to Panarin and he excels with players who aren't offense-first.

Danault is a dream match for him.

"Most good teams happen to have a great center" is still a two-way relationship.

I completely agree.

Where we diverge I think is that I believe Zibanejad is a good enough center to win with, if the rest of the roster around him improves and we get a solid physical middle 6 center.

But who was the last cup winner to have a Zib type player as it’s top center while also having a similar (yet worse) player playing behind him?

What did the stats say about Trouba, Shattenkirk before they were Rangers?

The stats have a glaring weakness when it comes to separating an individual player from the rest of the team.

Danault outscores Strome at even strength in a walk every year.

One guy is stapled to the first unit and the other doesn't get PP time at all.

We need to move Strome out of that LH wall spot for Lafreniere anyway. When that happens, we'll be lucky if Strome gives us 45 points.

It's not writing off his points, it's just what the stats say.

Is the bolded really true? I took a very quick look and I see Strome had 29 this year vs 23 for Danault. Last year looks like 41 for Strome, 43 for Danault.

I'm not arguing Danault can't bring a lot to the team, just trying to counter the notion that Strome's points can be easily replaced.

With Lafreniere, Kakko, and Kravtsov getting more time, and if a 50-point center came in, his points could very easily be replaced, yes.

It's not like he's putting up 90. He has a career high of 59 playing with the best LW in hockey.

We're creaming our jorts over a guy who scored .45PPG this year and has a whopping assist thus far in the playoffs?

I'm convinced half the people on this board would be content with us adding more offense only players. The team desperately needs to add a different dimension.

It's either that or we become the New York Yankees :dunno:

Offense is sexy. People feel like they can see it, or read it. It's "tangible" so people gravitate toward it.

Word.

That Yankees core had so much potential and they spent five years screaming into the void that they're actually good at what they're bad at and they have no flaws.

Lecavalier and Richards come to mind in Tampa Bay.

And as I've said before, if Strome stays in my own personal NYR world, it's as a right wing on the Panarin line, filling in at center only with injuries.

For those who would suggest 'just keep Buchnevich then' that's fine and good, but Buch's trade value is a lot higher.

I still think both are moved this summer.

its been amazing to watch some of the same people who were so upset at this team a few weeks ago that they nearly committed seppuku, be now willing to die for Ryan Strome.

Rangers can still add a top offensive player as long as he’s better than Strome’s two way play and then they can add to the bottom six to change up the team. It doesn’t have to be one or the other

The stats always suggested Trouba is what we all think he is.

shattenkirk is a good player who had a shitty injury that he played through and was unfairly criticized here. Anyone looking at the stats could’ve told you he would bounce back in Tampa and was a great buy low candidate.
