True but Eichel is also a baby, doesn't care about defense, can't win a faceoff, and puts up half his points standing where Panarin does on the powerplay. We're gonna have Panarin there, see, that's the thing.

Eichel as a rookie was none of those things.
We’re seeing what eichel looks like after 4 years of Buffalo. How much does his attitude and game change in a winning team? How much did O’Reilly get better once he got to stl.

We’re not STL though. Look at all the bullshit that’s happened here the last couple of seasons. Lias. Kravtsov. ADA. Lemieux. Gorts/JD.

We’re not the dumpster fire that Buffalo is, but we’re not a good team yet either.

O'Reilly was consistently great for Buffalo. I don't see the change you're referring to. His totals went up a bit because he joined a better team. The underlying numbers were identical.

The Red Wings and Oilers have been just as dysfunctional. We've never seen Larkin check out on half the game and McDavid should probably win the Selke. And BTW, Edmonton didn't get any f***ing better. McDavid is just breaking records for point shares.

Eichel has red flags because of Eichel, not because of Buffalo.

We have a process that we're committed to and I don't want a player that's gonna check out it that process doesn't go as fast as they want it to.

We low-key have enough problems with that as it is.

Larkin is okay. I don't know how we can say that what's going on in Detroit isn't effecting his game. Maybe his body language is better than Eichel's? But Steve Yzerman is going to approach trade negotiations for that guy like he's a superstar in the league when he isn't. Last time around with Stevie Y we got three of the worst players in the NHL.

If we have an advantage over most of the league, along with Toronto and maybe a couple others, where free agents will want to go here, I'd rather go for Danault who's a good fit for the team in some of the same ways Larkin is.

1- Eichel has been in Buffalo for six years. Easy mistake to make, as he's only played about four years worth of games.

2- Outside of a small bump that first year in St. Louis, ROR's numbers have been fairly consistent through his time in Colorado, Buffalo, and St Louis. In fact, ROR's 2nd year in STL was pretty much identical to his first year in Buffalo.

Players don't get exponentially better (or healthier) just by leaving a bad team (see Rick Nash, Scott Gomez, etc etc etc). We need to stop selling ourselves on that myth only to be shocked when it doesn't pan out. Again.

Zibanejad's 5 on 5 numbers this year in every other dimension besides finishing were just bad. And it wasn't the case of this starting off poor and recovering throughout the year...that really only happened with his headline production.

Here is Zibanejad's percentile ranking this season at 5v5 relative to the top 131 centers by minutes played (~4 / team on avg):

CF/60 - 8th percentile
CA/60 - 33rd
SF/60 - 9th
SA/60 - 30th

GF/60 - 81st (as the headline stats confirm the NYR scored a lot when he was on the ice...)
GA/60 - 38th
xGF/60 - 10th
xGA/60 - 44th
SCF/60 - 14th
SCA/60 - 44th
HDCF/60 - 13th
HDCA/60 - 18th

On-Ice Shooting % - 97th (...in large part due to a very high shooting %...though no doubt Zibanejad is a GREAT shooter)

In many cases these numbers represent a significant decline from where he previously was performing. Was the drop off due to COVID? Coaching? Aging? Something else?

A big contract extension for him right now carries significant risk, there's no way around it. If he is making $8-9M for 5-7 years and plays like he did last season, it could throw a huge wrench into the entire rebuild.

Ive said this many times, he doesn’t match up well against the top centers around us. Perfection line? Nope. Barzal? Nope. Sid’s line? Nope. Up and down against Washington like the rest of the team. That leaves Buffalo and Nj, and Hughes line was good against us.

It would be the same, at least against Tampa and Carolina with Aho.

Eichel would certainly have the same issues, if not bigger issues. I can bet my right arm on that, no matter what his current numbers say.

We must build a line that can counter these lines around Panarin. Preferably with Laf at center, or someone that can cover a lot of ice and is really good with the puck, there. It’s the only way.

Sorry the first statement is wrong. He's played in 6 NHL seasons, 4 of which had 82 games, 1 that had 69 and another that had 56. So that's a total potential of a total of 453 games. He's played in 375 NHL games which means he's played in 83% of the games he could (or 78 games which would combine to be a hair less than 1 season).

His production numbers have gotten progressively better each season, save for this season due to his injury. His ppg numbers:
  • Year 1: 0.69
  • Year 2: 0.93
  • Year 3: 0.95
  • Year 4: 1.07
  • Year 5: 1.15
I get not wanting him due to his most recent injury or the amount of assets it would take to acquire him, but there are a lot of false statements out there regarding him.

I also doubt he would be nominated for the King Clancy which is for the player that demonstrates the most on and off ice leadership along with humanitarian efforts if he was a total cancer.

This is a general post not focused on one specific poster.

That would be the biggest offseason this team has had in a long time just in terms of value players moving around.

I’m kind of expecting Buchnevich and maybe one other small deal.

Just him getting a fresh start is going to be huge. Plus I think the way this team is situated, we should be a playoff team for a while

Lets be clear, buffalo is a dumpster fire because its a losing franchise in a small isolated city. Even when the team was winning it wasn't a premier free agent destination.
The rangers issue with both Lias and Kratsov was more the kids wanted playing time. Multiple people have hung that on the coach thats no longer on the team. We can also wrap Lemieux into that category.
Thats not a dumpster fire, thats a player looking out for their own welfare. With Lemieux he asked out, kept it quiet, and we got an asset back. He wasnt playing in our top 9 unless we had injuries and he probably thought he was a top 6 guy.

JD/Gorts is not a good look, but theres some valid critism over Gorton, but I think the franchise is in a better spot from where it was at the start of his tenure, we had the #1/2 prospect pool depending on who's ranking (last year) and the #1 talent under 25. JD was just him sticking up for gorton based on all the rumors.

Are we the best franchise in the nhl ? nope, but no where near dumpster fire category.

WTf are you giving up to get larkin? because if it includes either KK or Laf, then hell no.
Larkin is on a tier below both Eichel and Barkov. He may even be below Mika on that tier at this point.
Yzerman has shown time and again to absolutely get the most out of trades, and I want no part of trying to acquire his current captain and 1c.

I agree with your larger point that NYR isn’t the team that could plug in a ROR and win, but St. Louis did have a hot mess in HC and in G when they plugged in ROR. Pietrangelo imploded after they won, and they’ve handled that alright (adding Faulk and Krug).

They’ve had their shit to handle.

Bergeron is 36 now. You really can’t know for sure how players are going to age

Either way? If this was a full season he wasn’t hitting 50 points. He sure as hell won’t be in Y6 of that contract when he’s 34.
He wasn't hitting 50 points but he also doesn't play on the powerplay.

I don't think fans understand at all how hard it is to score 50 even strength points. Give Eichel zero powerplay time and his career high is 56.

It doesn't *have* to be Danault but it has to be somebody like that. You play the hand you're dealt. We're three years into the rebuild and we're bloated with skilled wingers and puck-moving defensmen. That means the centers have to pick up the load on rounding out our game.

Eichel doesn't excel at anything this team is missing.

We already have Jack Eichel, except he's Russian and has better hair. They stand, I shit you not, in the same spot on the powerplay down to the inch. How is that working?

I know we look at these big scorers and think "well, team need goes out the window" but in a cap league, team need never goes out the window. Eichel is the farthest thing from a need in terms of the makeup he has. It's as sample as that.

Meanwhile, if you asked God himself to craft a player that does everything the Rangers need more of, he would hand you Phillip Danualt.

You try to make it out that the injuries aren't a real concern and, like Buffalo posters, you get all excited about his PPG. Let's look at those same seasons by a different statistic:

PPG ----- LEAGUE-WIDE SCORING RANK
  • Year 1: 0.69 ----- Tied for 58th (with Galchenyuk, Bobby Ryan, Mark Giordano, and Mikko Koivu)
  • Year 2: 0.93 -----Tied for 53rd (with Nino Niederreiter)
  • Year 3: 0.95 ----- Tied for 52nd (with Teravainen, Gourde, Forsberg, Monahan, and Jason Zucker)
  • Year 4: 1.07 ----- Tied for 23rd (with Monahan and Phil Kessel--behind Aho, Scheifele, Giroux, Tavares, Point, Marner, and six more centers in the top ten)
  • Year 5: 1.15 ----- Tied for 10th (with Huberdeau, just one spot and three points higher than Zibanejad, who played 11 fewer games)
Would you trade a haul in prospects for Nino Niederreiter? Jason Zucker? Monahan or Gourde? Would you pay 10 million per year for Kessel? Huberdeau or Forsberg? Teravainen?

Eichel can have all the talent in the world. You can talk all you want about his ppg and hypothetical points per 82 game seasons. He gets better usage in terms of zone starts and PP time than he would anywhere else, so it isn't a lack of opportunity. When all that is true (as it is here), you need to judge a player's value on his production. Not his production rate, but his production. And Eichel, for six years running, hasn't had elite production. His very best year had him tied for tenth--just one slot and three points higher than our current #1 center (who won't cost 10 mil and a huge pile of prospects). Yeah, Eichel has still been very good. But "very good" doesn't get 10 mil per year. "Very good" doesn't cost a boat-load of prospects.

Eichel fans can choose--he's either a player with a continuous history of injury troubles or he's a player who isn't as elite as they like to think he is. It's one of the two, and either label should be seen as a big old "Buyer Beware" sign.

I know that this sounds insane, but what are the chances that Panarin gets traded for a haul? Seems like just the kind of out of left field move that might happen.
