Teams with cap problems don't seem to need to worry as much with the way the NHL allows the rules to be circumvented. It irks me how many teams have won Cups using various iterations of cap circumvention. Now it's Tampa Bay. Kucherov sits out the whole season allowing them to be compliant, then, as soon as the playoffs start, and there's no longer a cap to worry about, the guy steps right into the line-up at his usual elite level. I don't blame Panther fans for booing him every time he touches the puck. They're getting hosed.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh

Adam Fox is not becoming the highest paid player in the NHL directly off his ELC.

What the hell?

Of course, but I think Shayna makes a good point, this is the number the big data projects, it’s not going to be that, but if he keeps this up, it’s not going to be 5-6m either. Maybe 8, and then it depends on term.

Another thing, from my POV, I am always in favor of long contracts — until someone performs through the roof. I am not against a shorter deal for Fox unless big gains can be made on a long one.

I think 8x8 should be the goal if he has another good season next year.

It's why if they do re-sign all of Mika, Strome, Buch, I want to make sure that at least Strome and Buch are tradeable. Then you can move them out when the great cap crunch of 2022 comes around.

Not something one would have thought a few years ago, but I actually think Dustin Brown would be an interesting pick-up if LA would want to dump him for whatever reason. 1 year remaining on his contract, so he is off the books at the right time.

Ryan Reeves is also a UFA after one more year. Would Vegas consider moving him? Hope that they have a quick exit this year.

Shayna got a pretty great article on our cap situation at the Athletic. Those contract projection tools seem to be pretty sick!

Look at our cap situation next year, it’s very illustrative of where we are at. 15 players signed, no goalies and Kakko and Kravy are unsigned. 3.4m of cap space. Of course Fox contract is nuts, but you get the point, maybe 8-10m of cap space.

The year after that Laf and co are RFAs. The Cap will also remain flat for that season.

If money comes in with term, money basically have to go out. It’s as simple as that.
Fox isn't getting 13.7M that's never going to happen. I'd be a bit surprised if Buch and Strome cost that much too, but odds are one or both won't be here anyway. These projections seem a bit outlandish. Howden won't get that much, Hajek can be replaced for league minimum.

I’ve seen this joke before around here, can someone explain it to me? I clearly must have missed some insider stories on JT.
I saw an article that basically said Vancouver’s gm said they’re 3 years out of contention, and Miller is 30 and that’s his ufa.
Add those 3 things up, better to move him early, get what you can and speed it up.

Yea that’s ridiculous. He’ll get 8x8 though

Well, he WILL be 30 and UFA in 2 more seasons.

I have no idea whose cockamamie idea it was that players stop being useful in their 30's. Some Zoomer analytics people probably.

Buchnevich and Strome will be cap casualties if the Rangers bring in a center. There is no reason at all to spend big on anything else as far as cap goes. They are loaded with wingers and defense

bozo summer

That analysis don’t hold from my POV. Quinn took big steps in the wrong direction this year when Vancouver struggled, as did Petersson. This despite Vancouver being perfectly respectable. What if they had sucked like Buffalo from Day 1?

Fox in my estimation will get like 8.5-10M, if long term, buying up many UFA years. 7-8 years.

Strome, honestly I don't really care, I would not be extending him. Even if it's futures back, I'd trade him. Need be make another trade where they move some futures for a NHLer.

Buch, at 7.5-8%, that looks about right. Depends on years bought.

Zbad I think that is pretty close to that 9M, and it's not cool when talking ~7 years, yet I don't see a way out of that unless they trade him as a rental, which only happens if they are out of playoff position next deadline.

Chytil seems a little low and no way they should be offering Howden/Hajek any sort of raise beyond the qualifiers.

He will after he goes crazy in a contract year.

I'd be really surprised if the Rangers didn't make a call on Zib this summer. If they get Eichel then of course Zib is gone but I gotta think that they're going to try and capitalize on him having a reasonable year left on his deal if they feel like they want to move on. Letting that come down to the trade deadline like it did with Kreider seems like an obviously poor decision.

Would think that any team adding Zib might want to talk extension before the deal as well.

I'd lock Fox up for as long as possible at 8M or under. If thats like 5 years opposed to 8 years then fine. Once Panarin/Trouba are out they can pay him more. It gives us the best Cup window to keep Fox's cost down for the next 5 years or so, even if it costs us more on the next one. With that said, I hope he takes 8x8.

I think they'll try, but Zibanejad and his people also know that he'll be able to command what ever he wants after a big year. I'd be very surprised if he got signed this summer, especially after an uneven season where he got the vid.

Whether or not that prompts them to trade him is a different story. I'd like to believe that you're right, but I can't see them doing it with out an alternative. That may actually be the one thing that stands in the middle of them pursuing Eichel and not doing it. I can't imagine that they tie up another 10 mill in cap space after extending Zibanejad. I can totally see them letting it play out the way that Kreider/Staal/Girardi did and yeah, that would be less than ideal.

I don't love either option (Anything over 5 years for Zibanejad would be a mistake IMO) but I'd prefer extending him to trading for Eichel, even more so if you can get him for something reasonable.
