The problem with holding on to Kreider to the deadline is that he is a leader (the leader IMO) of this team. If the Rangers are 12 points out of a playoff spot, not a huge deal. If they are 4 points clear and getting better and better, it’s a huge deal.
They made be able to get a better deal at the deadline. It could come at a big cost.
IMO, I believe the Rangers are pushing hard to make one kind of deal or another right now.
I'd consider Kreider a good friend to a lot of his teammates, and a guy whose got seniority, but I do not consider him a leader. Given the nature of the roster now, he's got a lot of seniority, and that matters in a hockey locker room, but a lot of those factors are by default.
This isn't a Wheeler or Benn we're talking about where guys would be nervous around. Kreider's of a guy that guys hang out with and enjoy being around.
In terms of leadership, the Rangers are woefully short, outside of Henrik, there isn't a player on the roster, outside of maybe Zibanejad and yes Ryan Strome that would fit the role of a leader. In other words, a guy that would take other players under their wing, and show them the ropes, and hold them accountable, instead of just being their friend.
