What did I just read… now were criticizing Mika, arguably our best forward? In fact, its not really an argument, he is our best forward by a long shot. Even one of the best in the league, especially considering how he plays an all around game.

On pace for his most goals in a season in his career, saved us a bunch in the playoffs last year, it’s going to be a long ten days after they finish tomorrow’s game.

Until there isn't. Like I said, it might hurt short term, but in the longer run it's healthier for the organization. And for the league, if there's a team that starts a trend. And no team is in a better position to do that than the Rangers.

Not likely to happen with all contracts. But how about just not giving those to frigging replacement level players, which Trocheck and Goodrow are?
I agree it’s an issue.

The good thing is Drury literally can’t give out any during free agency this summer being he’s capped out.

Which teams have cap space? Which teams are taking him for 4 more years?

If the cap were normal, yeah, odds are pretty good that we could move Goodrow and get something decent back. But cap space is tight all over and lots of teams are going to be trying to move money.

If we need the cap space, Drury will try to trade him. But if the cost ends up being prohibitive, he'll be bought out. It's not a coincidence that the contract was structured such that we get a cap credit the next 2 seasons if we buy him out.
How should I know which team wants him with his term and hit? Do you know which teams DON’T? Teams maneuver to make space for players they think will help all the time. He’s 3.6 mil, not 6.3 hahaha. And after next year he will likely be close to a bargain if the cap shoots up as predicted. It’s not 4 years of hardship. My point is it’s ridiculous to assume that NO team out of 16, would have space or desire for him, especially for basically free. And that’s assuming WE no longer can/want to keep him. Which we are quite a ways off from.

Rangers can't find already in the NHL defender mostly because good teams do not trade, or let good defenders leave by free agency.

Rangers seems to believe those who do leave or are available are good.

None of Shattenkirk, Smith, Yandle were treated as bottom pair, they should have been seen as such before they were imported.

More than anything, what the Rangers are doing by not playing Jones, they are asking, to within a year or two,. import a puck moving defender when they already could be developing one. Instead we'll see Hartpur, Hajek, whatever, and then they'll pay the premium for whoever they think it a puck moving defender in a year or two.

Why is Jones playing in the AHL not considered developing him?

He has a 200k cap credit the first two years of the buyout, meaning the Rangers actually gain cap space. yes there's a hit later on but the cap should be quite a bit higher by then. I don't think it will be that easy to trade him but maybe I am wrong.
Fair point, but I think it’s a wee bit early to assume buying him out is the only option.

Mika sounds like he’s about to cry in every interview. Tkachuk has the better type of emotion with bite and some attitude. Mika has that soft emotion like he’s nervous about losing his virginity.
Ahahahaha. Tkachuk has embraced the dark side.

Trying to predict no-trade lists and actual team needs is always a crap shoot, but if we are talking a draft/off-season move, and on the assumption that like with the Rangers the plan is to have him for a few years and then move him on to recoup assets:
- Caps could fit him. They need to resign a heap of guys so it depend son direction, but he could replace a guy like Eller
- Canes have Staal, Fast and STatsny coming off the books and could be a destination depending on how they go
- STL may have space
- COL. Don't know much about O'Connor but if the trade included him then they've effectively only taken on $2.5m in cap
- DAL. Yup
- MIN. Yup
- Buffalo. Yup

There are plenty of teams that could be interested in a guy like Goodrow who can slot anywhere in your lineup, play any forward position, leader/locker room guy, Stanley Cup winner, etc... Is his contract a little high? Sure. Have you looked at other forwards in that age/price range? He's really not overpaid when you use context.

I don't think he'll be bought out. He might not even be moved. I mean, if I'm Drury and I'm looking to move a NMC it's probably Panarin that I'm talking to. His contract being gone solves a lot of issues next year and I'm not sold on him ever being a factor in the playoffs with his constant insistence on forcing passes where there isn't one.

For now it sort of is, yet they just signed a LD for a couple years, Hajek is a RFA, we'll see who plays.

My guess, Jones gets traded this deadline because he is small for the Rangers ideal, and probably has some value to other teams who see he can actually play.

It's not too different than Pionk again, yet the Ranger do not have the cap space to trade and extend someone like Trouba who they'd value more for whatever reason. Only reason they'd keep Jones is if they can't find enough value by trading him, they certainly don't seem intent on using him.

We have fox locked up for another 6 years. We're not looking for a pp1 defenseman.

Every single one of those guys is a league average or better skater. They aren't all great or elite skaters, but they are not below average skaters.

It is also absurd for panarin to be on that list, he is a wonderful skater when he is motivated and moving his feet.

Gauthier is a much better skater than laffy. Not sure why he is even brought up here since he is a better skater but has a 10 cent hockey brain. Completely backwards from laffy
If any or all of those guys are league average, then so is Lafreniere. I'd love to hear how Joe pavelski is a league average skater while Lafreniere isn't, if it wasn't too absurd a statement to entertain.

Draisitl is not a good skater. Nor is Panarin for that matter. Pavelski and Robertson do just fine in Dallas. Kucherov. Ovechkin lost all his steps before he won his cup. Neither of the Tkachuk brothers are good skaters. Mark Stone. Tavares. Elias Petterson. Eberle. Huberdeau. Pasternak.

I don't know if all of these guys are "below average" but certainly none of them are better skaters than Lafreniere.
When (ok…if) the guy starts playing with confidence and hits his stride he’ll be anticipating better and look a ton faster. Guys always look slow when they’re playing reactively.

After seeing Trouba's player card and seeing he has been a league minimum caliber dman so far this season...yes we are better off with Gudas
That player card shit is brain dead. More than half the league rates as league minimum, and then there are like 50 guys that are worth entire teams.

Better off with Gudas is a horrible take as well, and the basis of your point speaks for itself lmao

Looking back at the biggest trade last summer, how great would it have been to get involved with Florida and Calgary and build a three team trade that wound up with Tkachuk to NYR, Panarin to FLA and Huberdeau to CGY. I wonder if Drury ever considered making that phone call.
Florida was hellbent on getting Tkachuk. What’s to make you think they would’ve dealt Huberdeau to take on Panarin’s deal? That’s also if Panarin waived. Doubtful that was ever realistic.

Do you think Drury stays for 3 ish years while he's offered other gm jobs elsewhere if his opinions are falling of deaf ears with roster construction and contracts being signed that would impact him when he took the gm job bc there is absolutely no question at all that prior to the Wilson situation gorts was in line for a promotion that would have seen Drury taking over the gm job. It was reported on and alluded to for months that was the direction they were heading. I'm not saying Drury 100 percent endorsed every move gorts made, but he knew the succession plan and he wouldn't be hanging w nyr if he believed the org was going down a bad path while other teams were offering him gm jobs
Idk… Drury was comfortable with the organization. He lives in CT. He has a family. Maybe he didn’t want to uproot his family for the sole purpose of not liking a Panarin, Kreider, and/or Trouba move just to pick up and move halfway across the country to another team which will likely have some problem contracts. Keep in mind, when he was taking over he was getting the big job he wanted on a team looking to be turning the corner into a serious team.
