Minnesota is in a tough place with the cap for sure. I think that's why so many funny moves.

Trochek lately has definitely left some to be desired. I looked him up on CF though last night, and I honestly thought he was a little higher on his cap hit. We are anticipating a spike in the cap between the '24 and '25 season, right? That '25 season is his last on a NMC but really if he's the 3C at that point, what are we worried about? He should be pretty solid 3C depth for that year and probably another one or two after.

Overall great post.

Bolded 5 because I wanted to point out, I feel like he's been doing this for a while now. I know some people here have noticed it, he has been a beast at the defensive side of the puck for a while. The last handful of weeks you are starting to see him play with confidence.

He's also growing into his body I feel like. He may have been NHL-ready physically when drafted, but he seems to be getting way more adjusted to this level of play and training to that point. He seems to really be coming together. I think people that see a wasted pick are crazy.

If the idea was to hide the kids until they physically developed in the NHL it is certainly working for Kakko & Chytil. Both guys had nagging injury issues as recently as last year, but i think theyve both looked and played much bigger this year

4. Even in their best games, counting last night, the Rangers go through periods of the game where our veterans get careless with the puck. It's easy to see it with Laffy when he's playing so poorly and everyone's hyper-focused on him. But lax puck management, poor coverage away from the puck, cutting corners -- these are things that have continued to plague the team all season.

5. A lot of people took notice about how brilliant Kakko's shift was leading to the 2nd goal. But there were a few other shifts last night where he had a similar impact. There was another shift when they were trying to protect the lead where Kakko made 3 or 4 plays on the same shift in the D zone and NZ where he broke up passes, won board battles and advanced the puck. He's so damn good at winning the puck at times, that he is like an instant pressure release valve. Kakko, Miller and Fox are easily the top 3 on the team at this. I'm hopeful that Schneider can enter this category one day. But if we're protecting a lead late, you kind want these three guys out there as much as possible.
What does it say to the players busting their ass, when they are over looked by the Vets who get away things that would have gotten the kids benched?

Hypocrisy/Double Standards is a major negative in every aspect of life when it comes to 'management'.

Last night was Playoffs Rangers from last year. Absolutely carried by the kid line. Gallant coaches the last 10 minutes of the game like he didn't watch the first 50.

GET THE PULSE. PLAY THE GUYS WHO ARE SKATING. I mean it's common sense. If they fail... you failed with your best on that night.

It's also time to replace Trocheck on the PP. I'd say Kreider too for the time being because he has not been himself all season imo. His screens and deflections are not what they were.

Draisitl is not a good skater. Nor is Panarin for that matter. Pavelski and Robertson do just fine in Dallas. Kucherov. Ovechkin lost all his steps before he won his cup. Neither of the Tkachuk brothers are good skaters. Mark Stone. Tavares. Elias Petterson. Eberle. Huberdeau. Pasternak.

I don't know if all of these guys are "below average" but certainly none of them are better skaters than Lafreniere.

Skating fast is the most overrated attribute in the league. People just mention it constantly because it is obvious and easy to evaluate. It helps but is by no means extremely important to being successful.

Haha that is one big brained plan for sure. I'd have to give Drury a lot of credit. I think they both play a pretty heavy game. As does Laff, but he seems to have a little Kreider to him where he's not always engaged but when he is you see it big time.

Either way, hopefully they are getting past that point of their young adulthood where there's more maturing from training in general thus maybe more injuries. These 3 are a f***ing chore to play against when they're humming. Not just skill, but the size and toughness with it is getting noticeable when they're going.

Good job locking up Harpur for basically the Vesey contract, like I said. He is a good #6 for the first half of the year and will be a good #7 when we add another guy at the deadline or if a young player ever comes up to take the spot. Good work getting some value contracts on players that actually contribute instead of the Carpenters of the world.

God f***ing damn it

Buyers market comment towards the end. Elliotte Friedman refers to Columbus allowing teams to talk to Gavrikov as the sellers fearing the market is not strong. They were talking about Buffalo making a value pickup that sends a message to the players.

$775,000 is the NHL minimum next season

"Rangers shall never have more than one good puck moving defender on the roster at any one time"

It's a central tenet.

Signing Harpur at that cap hit doesn't mean they can't find another good defenseman somewhere. If anything, I would think having a steady, low cost guy around may make it EASIER to slowly bring along a younger LD. If a young player can't beat our Harpur for time then they shouldn't' be playing in the NHL and his cap hit makes him an attractive #7 for the next couple of seasons.

Huh? I understand some guys games are built around speed and some aren't. But I fail to see how skating fast is the most overrated attribute.

Harpur has been terrible. It's a shooting gallery against with him on the ice but because he doesn't try any risky plays he's just perceived as a steady bottom pair dman. His offensive zone play is also extremely poor and he shoots way way more than he should. A bottom pairing dman who is bad at 5v5 and provides nothing at all on special teams has no value at all.
