It's a discussion for a different day but 3 x 11.5 for a player like Panarin who wouldnt otherwise go to Anaheim seems like a good thing for them. Shows the league you're serious about improving and takes the weight off Zegras and their other youngins. It's not like the Pacific is a gauntlet or anything
Why would he go now? He has an NMC.

8 1/2 months ago, he finished the season with 19 even strength goals, then went on to score 9 points in 20 playoff games. There's no doubt he's struggling right now, but there's no need for hyperbole or questioning his motivation.

His first 2 years in the league, he had shooting percentages of 17.9% and 17.3%. This year he's at 6.6%. He has 13 assists in 44 games, which is a career high. Last year he had 12 in 79 games. If his shooting percentage were anywhere close to his career numbers, he'd have at least 5 more goals. 23 points in 44 games with only 1 PP point isn't bad.

It's obvious he's gripping his stick too tightly. He had chances last night, but he doesn't have confidence with the puck on his stick. He will figure it out. We just went through this with Chytil last year and look at how he is doing now.

I would invite anyone who is ready to give up on Lafreniere to go back to the Chytil thread and start reading all the hot takes from last December. There are pages and pages of posts about how terrible Chytil was and now he's taking a big step forward and we're figuring out how to get him more ice. Development is not always a straight line progression.

The Panarin hate is absolutely bonkers. Has he played his best hockey? No. He has more to give. More responsible play. He has been frustrating at times with the forced cross ice passes and he certainly doesn’t seem to match well with Trocheck. But damn, even with him missing the net more and his accuracy down he is STILL producing at a PPG pace. And when he turns it on he makes the impact. He was the catalyst to the game winning OT goal against Dallas by physically outworking the opposition to win the puck. Then last night he was battling Gaudreau hard in the final minute along the boards near the blueline. The ability is still there and we need more consistency, but this not a guy who is completely failing us to the point where he is now nowhere near his salary worth as many here are suggesting. He is not far off. Besides Trocheck who plays a different style, who has been is opposite winger this year? Its been a bit of a revolving door. I like Kravtsov but he is still young. Last night you saw Vesey there. Panarin is a playmaker and you need a guy who can play a similar possession driven style with the ability to finish. You guys dont want to hear it but that could very well be Patrick Kane.

As i said its a discussion for the future but I'd speculate that he would be amenable to the beautiful weather of SoCal and reuniting with his BFF if he knows he's no longer wanted in NY. Get him away from the limelight too if the Putin stuff really weighs on him

Strome has actually found some chemistry with Zegras. That play and goal last night was beautiful. Too bad Zegras handed Pittsburgh the game in OT with a brutal decision on a 2 on 1.

Although..

Panarin - Zegras - Strome

Or

Panarin - Strome - Terry

Damn.

I know we are kidding around here. But I don’t think trading for a 31 yo Panarin with a 11.5 million cap hit is the answer for Anaheim.
What if we throw in 10 large pies from Joe's...I'll hand deliver them.

He said Kane isn't interested in just waiving for the rest of this season. Kane wants a contract extension. Frank said the Rangers like Meier but he has a $10M QO. Frank wondered how Meier's next contract would fit the Rangers with having to pay their other players.

Even a number less than $10M. Say $8M-$8.5M. The Rangers can't afford that number. All of these guys are getting $8M+.

The Rangers would need to move out one of their big tickets to pay Meier.

Are we supposed to be surprised that his goal scoring went down when his first 2 years in the league he had the 3rd highest sh% of any player in the league with at least 1000+ mins? The other four guys in the top five (M. Foligno, Boyd, Mangiapane, Jeannot) have a combined 19 5v5 goals this year on 210 shots for a 9.0% sh%.

Grier and Drury are pretty close to each other no? I wonder if this has more of a chance of happening than I originally believed.

Build Drury a statue if he can offload the Breadman and replace him with Meier.

You're supposed to understand that while his shooting percentage was high the last 2 years, his shooting percentage this year is very low, and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Meier is a true difference maker and a guy who plays with an edge and a pace the team sorely needs. Not sure what he would be looking for long term but what if he was willing to accept 8 x $6.5m or $7m. A trade of Kreider in the off-season could occur. In saying that, he's another LW...

He plays RW too. As for extending him, it would be extremely difficult unless the cap takes a jump.

If that gets done, I would wager it would include Laffy and an extension for Meier.

In that case, the fact that he plays RW would mean, at least to me, that Kreider or Panarin would be moved in the off-season moreso than Lafreniere.

Sorry I read his hockey reference sheet incorrectly it does state RW.

10 million dollar QO is the elephant in the room. But Meier is the type of player in a position of need at the right age that you rework your roster to fit him

i dont think anyone wants to (or can) give Meier the 10mil QO so his trade value will be as a pure rental. i would love him on this team.

I mean he could hold that over the head of the acquiring team but it should be evident what his desires are. The acquiring team is the only team who can offer 8 years. At 26 years old, an 8 year deal is reasonable. Almost every single team looking to contend is going to be crunched on the cap so his options, if he pushes for max dollars, are going to be teams towards the bottom of the standings.

I would be shocked if there was a massive offering to the Sharks if it did not include the acquiring team already speaking with Meier and agreeing on an extension.
