The offer sheet stuff is ridiculous but it’s even more ridiculous that we didn’t move namestnikov Strome or even Kreider. I certainly don’t want Kreider moved but all three of them being on the roster still is just not a very good job on managements part.

I still think buying out at least Smith, preferably Staal also, would have been the right deal.

Losing Staal's negative impact on the ice would be far better for this team than the cap space they gained for this one offseason by buying out Shattenkirk.

Sending Smith to the AHL saves $1,075,000. The Rangers will still take a $3,275,000 cap hit. The Rangers need a D to replace Smith. The Rangers won't save much money playing a kid instead of Smith. Are the Rangers playing with their bottom pair made up of all kids? Are the Rangers going with a bottom pair made of Hajek/Fox/Lindgren? Whoever ends up as the 7th D is probably better off playing more minutes in the NHL.

The Rangers don't have any money to get a better veteran D.

The Rangers will need Smith's experience and versatility of playing both sides on D. If Fox needs some time in the AHL, the Rangers don't have many options outside of Smith. He is a below replacement level player but the Rangers are stuck with him.

The Rangers are so young in key spots at center and on D. I read the Rangers should go with Strome as the #2 center. How does that help them get a good read on what they have with their own young centers? The Rangers need a take a big picture point of view.

The Rangers invested first round picks in Andersson and Chytil. They traded for another first round pick in Howden. It's time to see what they can do. Take off the training wheels.

The problem is that a Staal buyout alone would NOT have been enough to get cap compliant...

He would have gotten you half way there, Smith would have gotten you the rest of the way, but now you need another LD, a spare LD, and for the 2 years after the original contacts end, you were looking at DOUBLE the dead cap hit (both Staal and Smith had dead cap hits around $1.1-1.2M/year for 2 years).

Shatts brought the most cap relief now with the least dead cap charge in years 3 and 4 of the buyout.

Who is saying that Strome *should* be the 2C? The position I've seen around here is that he's the guy who slots in that position if no kids are capable of handling it, not the guy you want in that spot.

Overall, I agree on the Smith point (though I think you mean "playing more minutes in the AHL" at the end of your first paragraph there).

Don't you know that the ONLY factor in decision making is on-ice impact?!?

Finding two LD to replace Staal and Smith is really not as difficult as you make it seem, and having that dead cap in Y3/4 really won't be an issue unless everyone on their ELC currently really busts out and gets big money on their second contract.

It’s not saving that they still need a player at 700 k min to take his spot
