Speculation: Roster Building Thread II (2019/2020) - DeAngelo and Lemieux Left

Look at him in Q's dog house. That's my point. I really don't care how good he is or may become. If i'm spending this much time talking about s players character, i simply don't want him on my team.

Buch was in Quinn’s doghouse too (if you want to call it that). Similar to ADA, he went on to have his best season in his career.

Don’t underestimate how much of an impact coaches have; good or bad. Quinn’s usage of ADA the second 1/2 of last season was pretty telling of what he thinks of him.

Personally speaking, I don’t mind having a few players on the team that have abrasive personalities. I’m tired of having a team composed of “nice guys”.

This player is soft
That player takes too many penalties
This player has no character
That player is a head case
This player is inconsistent
That player is too old

It doesn't matter. People will always find something to ***** and moan about

Hope you don't mind but I decided using your post is handy for making a point.

As a caveat to what you're saying--95% of the players in the league have some real flaw or weakness in their game. Even elite players can always improve at something in small ways. On the Rangers roster the only two players I would say that don't have any serious weaknesses in their games are Panarin and Zibanejad--the next two closest are probably Kakko and Trouba.

Talking about DeAngelo--he is a player I've learned to like quite a lot. When I pointed out some of his flaws some people here got upset but there are areas of his game IMO he could stand to make some significant improvement. I don't hate him at all but he's worthy of a critique like most of his teammates. It's amusing to me when people go on that he's a first pairing D when he's still a work in progress--has room to get better. He hasn't fully realized his potential and a lot of NHL players only ever go part of the way to their own potential. It's not a given that DeAngelo will or won't.

To go further Henrik use to be pretty nearly flawless too. Age has caught up with him and he's not the same.

So yeah there will be guys that are too soft and others who take too many penalties--some with character issues and maybe one that's a head case and more than half of the players in the league aren't all that consistent and players decline as they get older. We have these discussions all the time about current and former players on our team. It's what it is and what it will always be.

ADA is a head ache on these boards. I can only imagine for NYR management.

Do we really need this on our team? in our org?

One of the things this board is known for is repeating the same conversations with the same subtext from the same posters in a cyclic fashion.

Why? That's just sports talk.

We as fans need things to react to, and in the summer there just isn't that much.

So since there aren't any games being played, these topics dominate the conversation.

It's just the nature of our medium and sport.

That shouldn't be the reason why a team moves out a talented asset.

Not pictured: teammates throwing DeAngelo into the water, trying to drown him, right after the picture

Strome only invited him to his wedding to make him feel bad

If DeAngelo was such a headache then why did they trade Pionk instead of him? DeAngelo was arguably their best defenceman last season, some of these posters really don't have a clue.

I’m surprised ADA wasn’t banned from the NHL after the incident in 2017...

There’s a reason Freddy is still a ufa. No one wants him because he’s not any good.

He's okay as a 6/7. The Rangers though have Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren, Reunanen and they won't all fit in Hartford at the same time. You'd like one of them to make the team or at least give one a good look and then another. To me there was really no need for us to re-sign Claesson.

I really like Quinn’s tough love approach. Namestnikov spent one game in the Quinn Bin and he got the message.

Buchnevich and D’Angelo both have talent. I want to see more performance before I decide they are long term first division players or second division players. Same goes for contracts.

Gorton is going to have a lot of opportunity for asset management in coming years. Performance and development will dictate how the roster will look in the future.

Of the 6/7 fill in dmen we've signed/traded for over the years, Claesson is more in the Strudwick/Woywitka category than the Holden/Eminger category.

Great patience shown by the Rangers with Kreider. If they felt buying out Shatty was likely then there was no reason to drive Kreids out of town for a low value return

I mean there are still a ton of unsigned UFAs and RFAs left. Teams aren't finished.

Aside: after the last 12 months, I would not be surprised if half the GMs in the league don't even know who he is. I feel like with defensemen, especially the defense-oriented, what GMs are saying to other GMs makes up a huge part of their value. Take the Jets and Pionk for instance... how much of that was Winnipeg doing their homework on him, and how much was just Gorton talking his shit up? And what are most GMs these days looking for on defense to begin with?

Trouba is more the triggerman type than the slick QB and he’s also very good at stepping up into the slot to receive a pass and shoot from in close; I can see configurations where he plays the PP with another D more in the passing role. (Though they could also rely on Panarin, Buch, or even Kravtsov to distribute.)

Re: @eco's bones point on the PK, I share hs concern as to ADA on defense. He’s simply too easy to move off the puck/too ineffective at protecting the front of the net. That flaw (combined with the fact that he’s still a regular at Chateau Bowwow this many years into his development) are why I continue to have doubts about his long term future with the team, despite the flashes of offensive brilliance. I can see him getting 2nd PK time to begin the season (mostly by default), getting burned repeatedly, and then being replaced by Fox somewhere in the game 20-40 range.

It's possible that Smith will continue to dress as a forward and get PK shifts on defense. Gives the coaching staff a chance to ease in Fox. I don't see ADA getting many shifts.

We never really know. Might be a less than desired return now, but it could actually be worse come the deadline(or better). The top prize will likely be Hall at the deadline.

and i agree. i can take the **** talk about staal, girardi, etc. i can cause i know the value they have brought to our team at one time. this ada generate fool has done nothing for us. yet we talk about him as he did or will.

Sorry, man, but this just sounds more like someone with an agenda than someone talking objectively about what he saw on the ice last season. ADA was arguably our best defenseman last year.
