This is one of those situations where you SHOULD OS Drais. They won't, but they absolutely should.

Do they have their own picks to do so? I dont think the Rangers do. And i certainly do not want to fork over the amount of 1st round picks it will cost in addition to the cap hit and hatred from the league. This team is transitioning. We shouldnt give away our first round picks.

Id rather make a trade offer.

They're going to have to extend contract limits to 10 years on the next CBA... It's going to be impossible for good teams to drive AAV's down...

$13.25M/8 years is 106M, over 10 years that would be a $10M cap hit. Manageable.

If McDavid signed a 10 year deal, he'd get 132.5 mil. He isn't getting a lower AAV at age 21 simply because he signed for 2 extra years. In 10 years, he'll only be 31.

It's only older players, usually near retirement, that will get a lower AAV by adding years. RFAs do not. Each UFA year added to the deal usually drives up the AAV.

So assuming that NYR avoid Shattenkirk altogether.

Let's also assume that they come to terms with Smith (meh) for about 4.25 million a year, and we plan to sign all our other significant RFA's.

That leaves the team with approximately 5-7 million in cap space, maybe more, to play with. Thornton is unlikely, so who do NYR target in free agency?

A couple players at 3 million?

Can Beargloves play the right side?

Either way the Rangers will trade or buyout Staal next year. At the very least I see Beargloves as a 6/7 defenseman this year.

Sign Shattenkirk and by 2018-2019 season:

Mac-Shatty
Skjei-Smith
Beargloves-DeAngelo
Pionk/Graves/Day/Pedrie

Bereglazov is a lefty, but played right for the bulk of his KHL time

yeah i have little hope in staal or holden being gone and even less hope that AV won't play them both together...

unless we really do sign both smith and shatt and then need to move one of their contracts to clear cap space to fill holes at center...but my dream scenario isn't realistic lol

stinks that maybe only 1 of deangelo, pionk and bear gloves might get a spot but there are far worse problems then too much depth and hartford's top 4 should be solid

The Oilers aren't trading Draisaitl. The Rangers should not offer sheet him either. Edmonton will just match and then they will come after Rangers RFA's. It's a waste. Edmonton will just trade RNH to lake cap room

Where'd you get 5-7?
23 total
I'll be generous here
Smith 4.5
Ziba 5.5
Fast 2
11 remaining.

Bereglazov is a lefty, but played right for the bulk of his KHL time

Could switch it around then to:

Mac-Shatty
Skjei-Beargloves
Smith-DeAngelo

I'd rather switch Beargloves with DeAngelo but dont like having two Offensive defenseman paired together with Skjei-DeAngelo

And that is being generous.

More likely 12 available.

If only we could move Staal too. Then 17 available.

In my opinion at least, Bereglazov is better than DeAngelo. We stole him.

I'm not necessarily advocating offersheeting Draisaitl, but if the Oilers have McD and Drai making a combined ~$25MM per year, they're not offersheeting anyone. Not effectively, anyway.

Staal is staying.
Flip Nash for a center.
That's 8 more. 31 before signings
Ziba 5
Smith 4.5
New center- 5?
Dadonov-4.5

12 left

If they don't go after Shattenkirk because of his askking, FO are idiots.

Looking at the Vegas roster, they have two defenseman that are right handed, but does anyone know how many play the right side.

Left handed: Bischoff, Emelin, Garrison, McNabb, Merrill, Reinhart, Sbisa, Schmidt, Stoner, Theodore

Right: Miller, Engelland

If they are light on Right D, can we send them Holden? Ironically, he is a lefty but he plays both sides.

They are deep at center, so is there anyway we get Lindberg back for Holden? Add a pick or waiver exempt guy for the farm?

Holden + a 3rd for Eakin is what I'd do

I would move mountains to get Draisaitl on this team but it's not happening unfortunately. With Chiarelli's trading track record we might be able to get him way cheaper than we might think though

Maybe right now. I mean they are different players also.

For me, balance is more important than ranking of best to worst Dman on the team obviously. I like to have 3 quality pairs that have a offensive minded D and a defensive minded D. I think when you divert away from the crap we iced the last couple years the 2nd and 3rd pairs will similar minutes in ice time.

Depending on the player, I might like the compensation for our offer sheeted guy.

But that lineup has empty spots.

I'm including the likely cost of

A) a 7th defenseman (After Staal, McDonagh, Holden, Smith, Skjei, DeAngelo)
B) a 4th line center and a 13th forward.

Still probably only reduces it to 8 million, with the one spot (top 9 center) open in the lineup.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Miller-Hayes-Nash
Vesey-XXXXX-Zuccarello
Grabner-Nieves-Fast/IR replacement

We also can't necessarily assume Klein is retiring.

Holden + a 3rd for Eakin is what I'd do

Eakin makes $3.85m. I won't get into if that is good value for him or not, but we are looking for a #1 and a #4 center. He's too much for #4 and obviously not a #1.

We know Lindberg, know he's a fit, he'll be cheaper.

I could be off and the Rangers could be going with Zib and Hayes as our 1,2. Eakin as our 3rd line guy but in all honesty I'd rather keep the 3rd round pick and try to pry Lindberg away with a later pick.

In my opinion at least, Bereglazov is better than DeAngelo. We stole him.

this needs context.

bereglazov is better than deangelo and we stole him ?? where to begin.

lets check back after camp when they are both on the team and both doing what they do best. then we might know who's better.

bereglazov looks like a decent defensive dman. deangelo was a 1st round selection and has high end offensive skills that stand out.

at this point, this is just conjecture and opinion based upon nothing measurable.

Total opinion from watching him in the K.
