This.

Really hoping DeAngelo becomes something very special. But he still has a lot to prove and is not there yet.

A lot of people definitely do not understand what Shattenkirk is. And anyone who thinks DeAngelo is sufficient is much more than just misguided.

Here's my answer:

Nashville had 1 x #1Dman and 3 x #2dmen this season. Look how far it got them.

A top 4 of:
McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-DeAngelo

With all of Holden, Bear Gloves ready to step into the 2nd pairing if necessary, plus both Graves and Pionk waiting in the wings is fantastic. We need at least one ready-to-play NHLer. I would go 7 years on Shattenkirk if the AAV comes down to about $5.5-5.8M... I would also not front load the contract in order to make it buyout-able towards the end of it.

If the Rangers falter this year and Skjei shows Top 2 abilities, then I can see us shipping out McD for assets rather than paying him big bucks (Shattenkirk like money) when he's hitting his 30s.

True... all depends when the drop-off could be.

Is EDM really going to devote 1/3 of their cap to two players? McDavid is definitely worth 1/6 of total availability, but I don't know how you can ice a competent team when you only have $50MM to fill 18 positions...

Wonder if there's a deal to be struck around McDonagh for Draisaitl...? :naughty:

They're going to have to extend contract limits to 10 years on the next CBA... It's going to be impossible for good teams to drive AAV's down...

$13.25M/8 years is 106M, over 10 years that would be a $10M cap hit. Manageable.

Would us offersheeting Draisaitl be possible in any stretch of the imagination? I think he's worth all those picks. He would fill our biggest hold and be the superstar #1C we've been wanting forever.. I'd give him $10 million++

Zibanejad
Staal
Skjei
2018 First Rounder
2019 2nd Rounder

for

Draisaitl

Kreider - Draisaitl - Nash
Buchnevic - Hayes - Zuccarello
Vesey - Miller - Grabner
FA Winger - Nieves - Fast

McDonagh - Shattenkirk
Smith - DeAngelo
Pionk/Day/Beargloves/Graves

Near Future core is:

Draisaitl - Kreider - Andersson - Buchnevic - Vesey - Hayes - Miller on offense
McDonagh - Shattenkirk - Deangelo - Day - BearGloves - Pionk/Graves on defense

I don't know about all this trade McD stuff. WTF replaces him? lol

Some people on this board think they're playing a video game. They also think we need to trade anyone over 26 and just endlessly acquire assets. Young assets > winning.

People were talking about full rebuilds during the 2014 cup run, 2015 president's trophy season and ECF run. I honestly believe some on here would've been happier to have traded McDonagh and Hank and anyone else of value and "win" the trade by acquiring tons of futures, instead of going on the Cup run.

Bereglazov will be on the team. One of the best defensemen in the KHL last year. Day will not. Holy **** is this guy overrated, wasn't even one of the best defensemen on his own team last season.

Pionk probably starts in the AHL, might get a later call up if he has a good season. I think his spot and Graves spot are highly dependent on who else we sign.

I still would want to sign Shattenkirk because there is no top talent in the RHD position. McDonagh's contract being up soon is huge, especially if they're going to sign Shattenkirk to a 6 year deal. I am thinking that NYR is going to use this year to see what they have in all of Skjei, DeAngelo, Pionk, Graves, Day, Bereglazov, and Zborovskiy

For this season, they will most likely run:
McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-DeAngelo
Staal-Bereglazov

Truthfully, I like Shattenkirk here at that price tag--this issue becomes that we can't pay everybody what they want. If Shattenkirk solidifies the top RHD, Skjei grows into Top 2 abilities, and DeAngelo proves to be a solid #2 RHD behind him, then McDonagh could feasibly be traded for a #1 Centerman, and then you could feasibly run this the following year:

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Pionk/Graves-DeAngelo/Bereglazov/Day
Pionk/Graves-Zborovskiy/Bereglazov/Day

However you'd be upgrading up front to someone that's close to MacKinnion level good--that's scary awesome. Yet, there are still a TON of options on D, even if they are signing Shattenkirk right now.

McDonagh's NTC limits him to be traded to TWENTY teams in the league.. That's more than Girardi and Staals's NMCs. There's a lot of flexibility with trading McDonagh. It does NOT have to happen right now, but this is some very forward thinking.

I think Bereglazov has an excellent chance but I also don't think it's a given just because he played in the KHL last season. He could struggle with adjusting to the different style of play and need time just like any other player.

He has a KHL out clause.

If he struggles so badly, I think he'll just go back to the KHL.

But more likely, I think he'll make the team, and how quickly he adjusts will depend if he has a big role early on or not.

They can always make him the 7D, if he's struggling early on. He's not really a kid anymore, already 23.

ideal scenario imo would be to get rid of staal and holden so the kids can battle for the 3rd pair but not holding my breath on staal-holden not being a pair next year

It's going to be so difficult to get rid of Staal. Just can't see it happening except for a buy out scenario.

Yes he was.

But I'll be beyond floored if he breaks camp with the Rangers though. There are still a ton of things that he needs to sharpen up before hes ready for the jump.

This is one of those situations where you SHOULD OS Drais. They won't, but they absolutely should.

What about approaching Edmonton about a trade outright?

Skjei could be part of the deal and include Zibanejad who could be their second line center to McDavid at a much more palatable cap hit.
