Ghost of jas
Unsatisfied
I am excited to see training camp with this group of young Dmen in competition for spots. The thought if exhibition games with the chance to see Bereglazov, Day, DeAngoelo, Graves and Pionk getting ice time should be fun.
Everything I heard on Day is that he got better as the year went on. Isn't that a good thing?
Grigorenko and Burmistrov would be fine options for the 3C role. I prefer Grigorenko because I feel he still has a little room to grow, and he can also swing out to the wing if need be.
As far as Pionk and Graves are concerned, I think Pionk has the edge if only because he brings a highly sought after skill set to the blue line. I still think he can be a Wisniewski sort of player. Not great in his own end, but is fantastic on the PP and has a nice edge to his game. Kid can absolutely rifle the puck as well.
I like Burmistrov over Grigorenko because, as I remember it, Burmistrov is a great skater and good defensively. I know less of Grigorenko so maybe I'm wrong.
I'll have to see Pionk in the pro game, but based on what I've read about him I'm inclined to favor him over Graves who I just don't think brings enough to the table. Graves has a big shot and can move guys out of the crease but I worry about his ability to keep up both physically and mentally. I have no problem with defensive-oriented defensemen (guys like Beukeboom and Girardi have been some of my favorite players over the years and I was a McIlrath guy) but the league is going so fast now. If you're going to play a defensive game that's great but you need to be able to keep up. I've never been sold on Grave's ability to do that dating back to his days in Quebec when everyone was getting excited because he was scoring a lot of points.

Thoughts on Nick Bonino? I know he wont replace all of Stepan's points but hes like a 15g/40pt 2 way center. Better than nothing, that's for sure.
This is the kind of buy-low 23 year old lottery ticket I definitely take a chance on.
I would bet that Gorton is keeping an eye on Edmonton. If they go big on Draisaitl, they might have to move RNH at a discount, but if they balk at Draisaitl's asking price, maybe the Rangers could build a package for him.
I'm not crazy about RNH, but the Rangers had luck with a similar player in Brassard. A former high draft pick who was supposed to have a ton of upside, but wound up in an organization that was in disarray. Maybe a change of scenery could jump start him.

Someone is going to overpay him out the wazoo.
You're probably right - but the Rangers need another center one way or another. I wouldn't be against a 2-3 year deal and slightly overpay. Not sure what his market value is though.
I'd take RNH on the cheap.
Yes.
Historically he's a PP producer - even in Junior. The half-wall on the right side was his bread and butter.
So what is the problem for his lack of point production? That's McDavid's area. RNH plays on the 2nd PP unit. You can't really argue with the results - the Oilers PP was lethal last year, so it was justified to leave him on the 2nd unit.
The ES totals between Stepan/RNH is quite similar. RNH played mostly with Lucic and Eberle, while Stepan played with Zuccarello and Kreider.
Zucc, Kreid >>> Eberle, Lucic respectively.
RNH isn't the better player, but I think he's way more dynamic for our offense.
