1 Cup in 80 years, tired of winning what? Participation trophies? Oh yeah man 50 wins 100 points we're making the playoffs......and? Sure it's great and who doesn't enjoy being a playoff team but the cold hard truth is this team had its opportunities and couldn't get the job done, changes need to be made. Or let's just keep trading all of our picks for the slim chance of actually winning another Cup. This team isn't good enough to win it all that's a fact. It's a decent team but the defense is subpar even with a Shattenkirk, and the forward group is deep but lacks game breakers. It's time to change it up, new blood. Younger, faster. I want to build a team that can contend for years, this team as it stands now has had its window close. But I'm sure bringing in some more past their prime stars is just what the doctor ordered, it's worked so well since 1940:sarcasm: 50 wins? Do we get another banner ceremony for that?

Listen, I'd love to have more than one Cup in 77 years. I don't go back 77 years tho. I go back to 1970 when I was 8 after having started playing the sport and than started following hockey and knew what was going on. So for me it's 1 Cup in 47 years. There's been alot of suffering over those years no question. There's been alot of great times as well. Moreso than bad times and that's with just one Cup.

I'm sorry Paulie...I'm not a Cup or Bust Guy nor am I a "give me a participation trophy" fan either. I'm a realistic fan. And being a fan of this team it's not in the cards that there is going to be any tanking going on...just isn't happening. And frankly I'm glad our mngt continues to try it's best to win a Cup.

It's not an easy trophy to win. Probably the hardest in all of sports to win. And in this city, it's that much harder. So yeah when my team wins 50 games...100+ points, teams hate to play us, they entertain me, my team has likeable players I love to watch play, they always make the playoffs and go on long playoff runs with Cup aspirations, I'm not goiing to slit my wrists because we didn't win a Cup again. I'm sorry...just not going to happen.

Rangers and Gorton are going about things the right way....retooling, getting younger and drafting solid guys and making trades that get us younger as well.
Maybe under Sather I could agree, the method sucked. But the way Gorton is doing it, is the right way and pretty much the only way you can do it here in NY.

Window IMO is not closed...

And yes the way the Islanders have done it has just been phenomenal...eh? lol

What past their prime players are we bringing in this year? I haven't heard of any.

Most teams that make a conscious decision to rebuild end up still rebuilding ten years later. It's very healthy for a franchise to remain competitive.

Rebuilds only work when the NHL fixes the draft lottery to hand you a generational talent.

and even the with the worst record, there's no guarantee you get the #1 overall pick..

I think it's funny that Redden still gets reactions like this, but people miss Girardi.

I think people love Girardi but not the contract. Sure he wasn't mobile or some elite pick moving d man but he literally was the ideal teammate. During the Torts era he gave his body up night in and night didn't agree well and his contract sucked but I have a lot of love for the dude.

And that's where the NHL comes in.

First full lottery the year Crosby is coming in, sudden changes to the lottery system the year McDavid is coming in.

But that's none of my business.

Good news is, we're a big enough market for that to be done to us. Bad news is, we'll have to either be unwatchable for a decade like Edmonton or almost sold like Pittsburgh. No thanks.

Considering making the playoffs as "an accomplishment" in a league where 16/30 teams make the playoffs, is just so far removed from my mentality.

If it gets it done for you, I mean hats off. And I'm NOT trying to argue that we haven't witnessed a great run here. But not just enjoying, but outright celebrating "making the playoffs" in today's NHL is just crazy to me.

Exactly! And this is no spite but you have to have higher expectations. Nobody will deny how hard it is to win. Us it you're just happy to make the playoffs. Well I don't know what to tell ya.

Here's how we are getting our generational player and pretty much only way....ready?

Pray and hope as Sirico and I discussed earlier that by the grace of the hockey gods and they smile brightly upon us that Tavares says no to any Islander offers and becomes available as an UFA. It's unlikely but not totally out of the stratosphere that a scenario like this could occur.

Short of that, there are no generational talent available to be had. At least for us there isn't. Gorton is going about things the right way. Hopefully we catch some lightning in the bottle with some of the kids we drafted.

People are always going to have the rebuild fetish regardless of what's on the roster.

People wanted to rebuild in 2014 two months before we went to the SCF.

I think people on both sides are overthinking this. Gorton is trying to thread the needle. He is neither signing Thornton nor trading McDonagh. He saw an asset in Stepan that he was worried about declining, while also seeing he had a chance to try a get a player (Pettersson) that could be an important piece going forward. Unfortunately, he didn't complete the final portion of his plan. But, that doesn't mean everyone over 27 is getting traded. OTOH, it doesn't mean he's going to chase centers in free agency that will be overpaid the moment they sign the contract. I also think he saw Nashville's success and realized he has to get more mobile on the backend. He'll sign both Smith and Shattenkirk, and use the cap space to move Staal for a similar bad contract at the forward position.

I like this idea.

Not sold on us signing Shattenkirk. We're hearing from more than one source now that the Rangers aren't pursuing it.

If the Rangers aren't going Shattenkirk or a #1(who knows where) or even 2C... how about locking up both Zibanejad and Skjei to team friendly 5 or so year deals?

Let's not be disingenuous here and say that I said "I'm just happy to make the playoffs" and "I need to have my aspirations higher"...yada yada yada. Both you and Swayze are now going with this narrative and that's totally not true in describing my fandom and what I wrote about when I addressed Walnuts commnent "what are we winning".

What I'm saying in a nutshell is we are the NY "****ing" Rangers and yes despite just one Cup in my 47 years rooting for this maddeningly frustrating yet my favorite team in my favorite sport on the planet, I still feel that so long as my boys entertain me by giving me a solid and exciting and competitive regular season(unlike the Avalanche), make the playoffs and go on hopefully a long playoff run which is one of THE most exciting times of the year in any sport not a doubt about it, even if we don't win the Cup, I'm not going to cry about it and kick my dog nor am I not going to be a fan anymore.

I realize the constraints a team like ours has playing in the meccas of sports where tanking is not permitted. So I know we are getting no Crosby's,Malkins or Kovalchuk'....just aint happening. So I accept the fact that we need to try new and different methods of competing.

The way Gorton is trying to implement I have a strong feeling is going to be successful and it will get us closer to a Cup. But for anyone to doubt my fandom because I'm not a "Cup or Bust" person or ***** and moan cause we don't win every game we play...well I'm sorry. I'd argue that I'm a hell of a great fan as I've been loyal and steadfast for a very very long time. I'd venture alot longer than most peeps in here who I doubt have gone thru the really tough times as myself and anyone who is around 50 has. You want to talk about suffering? Try having dealt with losing to the Islanders 4 straight years while the Islanders won their 4 Cups.

Those 4 years still haunt me. And yet since they won their Cups, the Isles have sucked moose dung and meanwhile we are one of the elite teams and franchises in the sport. I'll take where we are over a team like theirs which has been in full tank rebuild for the past 30 years which apparently you want us to do for 2-4. ...too funny
