I do not think Rangers overachieved last year. I think the exact opposite. They lost a couple of points when Henrik played like AHL goalie.

Sure, but he's never been that guy. The numbers suggest he could fill the role, but it's never actually been demonstrated. Boils down to faith in the numbers vs 6 years and potentially $40M.

In the last seasons, Shattenkirk had 7 and 8 more points that Pietrangelo and was the leading scoring d-man on his teams. How do you defining "never actually been demonstrated"?

I think Bonino gets north of $4m and more then 4 years.

If that's the case, then he's not a viable option. But I think we're still short a center. If Gorton is rebuilding "on the fly", then reading between the lines, he still wants to ice a competitive roster while he rebuilds the core. I don't know if replacing Stepan with Nieves is going to be palatable if that's the case, so I am guessing he's looking at options outside the organization.

If UFA market is inflated to the point where Bonino is netting that kind of a pay day, then what are our options via trade?

We had some atrocious line management in the playoffs. Should have demolished Ottawa.

I meant regular season. I will never forget that game against Dallas at MSG where he was replaced by Hellberg. He was terrible. He had 4-5 really bad games even before that game and IMO lost the team 5-10 points last season. He was not good enough against Ottawa but was not only one to blame for that series.

Per Custance:

Lots of interest in Patrick Marleau coming off 27-goal season. Toronto, Anaheim, NYR, SJ, Carolina, Nashville, LA all in the mix.

If you look at usage, Brendan Smith's is very comparable to Shattenkirk's. So if you are comfortable with Smith on the top pair, not sure why Shattenkirk would be different.

By bad luck you mean bad management and giving up late in games right?

I mean our xG total was +5 against Ottawa during the series. Plus we had McDonagh out late in game 2 and Ottawa scored both goals to tie. Game 5 we had Smith out there when it was tied up. I mean AV has his issues but I think that narrative was a bit too much honestly.

Agreed I thought we got horrible goaltending from our number one. Most teams wouldn't have even made playoffs with the goaltending we got

Yeah. I really think people underrate last year team which was IMO aside from usual suspects (Mr. Girardi a and Marc Staal, other D) very good.

Game 2 McD was out with Girardi, Skjei + Smith didn't play for last 5 minutes.

Game 5 Smith was out there, but with Staal and GLASS was also on the ice BY CHOICE.

I think that narrative is completely justified.

xGF is not really a great stat to judge a playoff series by, playoff series are their own animals, too many variables and the sample size is too small.
