Not sold on this. Tavares could based on how the season begins. What is their arena situation? Are they actually contending, not just for the playoffs, but for a cup?

If he doesn't want to worry about leaving NY, he can sign with us. He'd be able to keep his current residence and be with a team that won't be leaving NY.

People were convinced Stamkos would hit UFA, and he signed days before he would be available. That 8th year a team can offer a player might be worth it for a guy like Tavares.

If you cannot assure him you're playing in the same city for the next 8 years, it's pointless. He'd have to get up and move his family anyway. That's important and why the Coyotes cannot draw any players.

Allucks posted that from the people he spoke to who were at the draft, the Rangers were hot and heavy for Pettersson. Edge also said the Rangers were prepared to go Alli. For the player they wanted at 3.

This is just plain wrong. The Rangers were willing to go all in for Makar at 3. Maybe they wanted Petterson at 7, but they weren't moving up for him. Makar was the guy they wanted.

The Islanders aren't moving to a different state.

The Islanders aren't moving to a different state.

They had players who didn't like the move from Nassau to Brooklyn. Matt Martin was one of them. He left the team. Tavares is putting pressure on the front office. 1 playoff series win in 24 years. Tampa went to 3 ECF and 1 SCF before he signed. It's a big difference.

With the acquisition of DeAngelo, chances of signing both Smith and Shattenkirk diminishes. Bereglazov is already a good guy for the right side, with a ton of experience considering his age. Played on NA-sized rinks most games and was a 2nd pair D-man on a team that won the Gagarin Cup in 2016 and made the final in 2017. I'd be okay with just Shattenkirk.

Was the 2nd in 2018 conditional on us re-signing Smith? I am not sure.

Either way, going with Shattenkirk, DeAngelo and Bereglazov on the right is not a bad trio. If we do end up signing both Smith and Shattenkirk, I expect DeAngelo starting in Hartford IF Bereglazov earns a spot in the pre-season

No, they get the pick either way

I was upset that it wasn't conditional when the news of the trade broke. It 100% should have been

The dream of
McD - Shatt
Skjei - Bear
Smith - DeAngelo
is wonderful

But besides the cap issues, I'm also not sure I'd wanna commit to that many guys, with Pionk, Graves, Day and Zboro in the pipeline

Really? I think that honor belongs to the other goalie on the list, Niemi. Pavelec would be my preference out of that group.

Pavelec has been consistently bad as a starter for Winnipeg for years. Like definitely worst in the league considering minutes played.

He occasionally has a good stretch and people are all like "oh yeah look he's turning it around" and then he sucks

I'd rather a guy who is working on establishing himself in the league like Talbot or Raanta than a failed starter

Rather have more options than less after not having depth over the last few years

Teams are interested in Dion Phaneuf. The Kings are one of the teams. Phaneuf has 4 years remaining. $7M cap hit. $25.5M in real money. Staal has 4 years remaining. $5.7M cap hit. $21.2M in real money.

If not for Hank, I'd say let's just wait for some of these D prospects to develop. Given that Hank has a finite time in this career, we should get him at least one bonifide pair to play behind. I think you have to inquire on Shattenkirk, but it isn't an open question. He'll have to meet us on $ and term.

Martin left because he wanted more money. The Islanders won't lose Tavares as a free agent.

Cam Ward and Antti Niemi have won a Cup while Price and Lundqvist will retire without a ring haha

Committing to both Shattenkirk and Smith isn't that bad. We can always trade them if one of the younger kids is ready.

We seem to have a log-jam on the right side though with Shattenkirk, Smith, DeAngelo and Bereglazov

Very similar to the guy who posted it a couple pages ago, I think the defense will look like this on opening night

McD-Smith
Skjei-DeAngelo
Staal-Bereglazov

My gut tells me they are banking that one of DeAngelo/Bereglazov/Pionk to become a top pairing guy. They don't want to commit to Shattenkirk according to multiple sources

Pionk is real close. I think he starts the season in Hartford, but I would not be shocked to see him on the big team by January. If all 3 of those young guys can lock up the right side, I think you see Smith shift back to the left on the third pairing, and they try to move Staal

But besides the cap issues, I'm also not sure I'd wanna commit to that many guys, with Pionk, Graves, Day and Zboro in the pipeline

This is also a pertinent point. Something has to give. They have a lot of guys who are NHL ready, or damn near close. Graves has to get a shot at some point

Pavelec comes in at around league average when adjusting for shot quality, that's how bad Jets have been in front of him during his career. He's far from the worst goalie.

Good point by RB. If teams are interested in Phaneuf and that disasterous contract then we should be able to generate interest in Staal.

I think it is clear that they want to keep him. If he was available, someone would have broke the news already.

Unfortunately, Phaneuf is better than Staal.

Has there been any inclination that Staal would even accept a trade? His family is based in NYC and he probably would just retire if bought out based on some of his previous statements

I haven't heard anything. I would assume that he would prefer staying right where he is.

The earliest attempt to move Staal is next summer. Next summer his NMC turns into a NTC, similar to what would have happened with Girardi's

I highly doubt he waives his NMC though. The truth of the matter is, he knows his time is short. The shoe has been dropped. The old core is being replaced. Girardi is gone, and he will be the next one on the way out.

But for now he has control with his NMC
