Offda is gonna have a stroke, but yeah I'd bring back McIlrath and see what he can do. What about Jake Gardiner in Toronto? Would they trade him? 26 years old and has 2 years left at $4M. Plays both sides, fast, strong, good two-way dman.

lol

some of you just cant let go.

dylan mcilrath is a border line fringe nhl 7th dman.

i was right the day he was drafted after a junior career where he made exactly zero allstar games on talent and was never once chosen to any national team ever and the one allstar game he did play in picked a fight. lol. you cant make this stuff up.

and i was right when he couldn't stand out in hartford. i was right when he couldn't keep a job here- even when most of the defense was injured. i was right when florida laughed him outa town and i was right when detroit acquired him and immediately sent him to grand rapids- and the wings were bad last year. like real bad.

and now that he's back in the A, where he will continue to percolate until he eventually ends up exactly where i predicted he would end up back in 2010.

as a 7th man who punches faces and does his best work without having to move his skates.

im sorry, that ship hasn't sailed. it sunk.

I'd like Shattenkirk on this team. 7 years is steep. I'd really prefer to keep it at 6 years if possible. Keep it in the neighborhood of $6-$6.5m.

Staal needs to go. Find a way.

When Staal goes, Smith should be the next priority.

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Bereglazov-DeAngelo

I'd also sign McIlrath in a heartbeat. Loved his attitude and work ethic.

Not sure which is more improbable doing a Houdini to get rid of staal or brining back mcilrath?
Btw if Shatty took a decent deal those six above would be a fun defense to watch and grow together

Would he take the Richards deal? 6 years 6.67M or whatever it was? Even if some team offers him 7 per, the lure of NY might lean him to here.

Damn those are stinging words for the pro mcilrath anti fowler group...but I digress ;)

I think he's taking a discount if he wants to come here. Everything about what he's done or said screams "I want to be a Ranger."

See, I told you he'd have a stroke  Just messing with ya, bud.

I'm still gonna keep pumping Nash to Florida. Why did Tallon move out Reilly Smith, and what is he planning with all of that cap space?

What is this team winning?

So are you one of them "Cup or Bust" fans which are usually fans who weren't around to fully experience the '94 Cup. So figure anyone who is born from 1984 who missed out on the enormous grief us older Rangers felt while the Islanders beat our ***** four straight years on their was to their 4 Cups.

You have a problem with making the playoffs every year with 3/4's of the time winning at least one playoff round and 50% of the time making it the ECF and once getting into the Cup finals?

I don't know, call me nuts or a "glutton for punishment" but I'm one of those crazy wacky older Ranger fans who has a blast during the regular season watching us win 50 or close to 50 games a year. I also get great enjoyment making the playoffs and watching the pessimists in here cringe when the Rangers end up defying the odds and win playoff rounds even tho we are supposed to lose in 5 to crap ass teams like the Canadians.

Yup but because the Rangers haven't won a Cup, I'm apparently supposed to think "what is the team winning"? Well guess what my friend, as I said a few times the past few days, maybe you should ask that question to Islander fans who have gone 34 years withought even a Finals appearance, have only made playoffs less than half the time(15 times), have won just one playoff round!!. Yes that is not a missprint...one playoff round in 34 ****ing years.

And yet "what are we winning"? Well for me making the playoffs 25 of the last 34 years since Isles last won a Cup, making it to 6 ECF's, 2 Cup finals and winning one Cup is the epitome of "what are we winning"? Well my answer is give me some more of that much much more. Ask an Islander fan how he feels about all that winning he did 35 years ago if he had to than go through a drought like this? I bet some would trade a few of those Cups for some of the enjoyment us Ranger fans have of at least having a chance to win the Cup pretty much every year.

And I have a very strong hunch Gorton is going to put us in position to once again have one of this ****** 50 win regular season, a for sure playoff spot locked up by Februrary and who knows maybe a run for the Cup if we get lucky.

Oh the horror...the horror. or "not winning"......lol

Guys who should get better generally via progression:
Miller (not necessarily points wise)
Kreider (also not necessarily points wise, consistancy, etc.)
Hayes
Nash (rebounding from an off year)
Mika (same as miller/kreider)
Vesey
Fast (prob better than 6 goals)
Buch
Puempel
Lundqvist (why are we forgetting this?)
Staal (3rd pairing minutes/matchups would probably work wonders, see Girardi to start last year for about 15 games)

Should roughly be the same:
MZA
McDonagh
Smith

Regression candidates:
Grabner
Skjei
Holden

I see A LOT to be optimistic about, even if its incremental improvement. We should have really no sub-replacement players afaict if Staal is slotted correctly, and if not, probably just him.

You're making a strawman with the 8th seed thing. If Nashville were a 7 seed would you be nitty about that too? How many 7th seeds? What about a 5th seed? The point stands.

Since 2006, the 8th seed has made it beyond the 1st round 5 times.

the 7th seed has done it 9 times.

6th seed has done it 11 times.

See a pattern?

Again, 8th seeds are almost always teams that are the best of a group of mediocre to horrible teams. Nashville was an exception, they got off to a horrible start and had a ton of injuries early IIRC and had to play catch up basically the entire year. LA was destined to miss the playoffs until their coaching change in 2012. Occasionally, you'll see a team go on some weird ass cinderella run like Montreal in 2009 and Edmonton in 2006 (IIRC, both teams missed the playoffs the following season.)

So yes, you can be a good team as an 8th seed, but more often than not you're just there for 5-6 games before gearing up for the summer.

I don't really see what JG can do to get his team to that level this summer.

Also, your list of players you expect to progress positively from last year is a wee bit optimistic.

Because bobby mac's article indicates we are not in on Shatty and if that's the case it raises the question of is this a true rebuild or not?

What's happening is called jumping to conclusions.

If we aren't "in" on shatty that's either posturing or they have other ideas on how they can use the cap space which we can't make a determination on until we know what they do with it...

Nilsson would be a great fit.

Brilliant minds think alike...

Seriously, Nilsson is the perfect fit behind Hank.

Benny will make him great as he does anything he touches.

He might be good enough to give Shevy a run for his money when the time comes that Shevy is considered.

Really hope this happens

I'm sorry but the only goal for a team should be winning the Stanley Cup. Your expectations shouldn't be "let's just content with hanging around and making the playoffs." I'm sorry but I want a team that wants to win. A team that gets upset when they lose. I like a high compete level. I like a guy like Hank who is furious when he loses. I don't want "eh whatever we did our best." We all know how hard it is to win, nobody is denying that. But set your expectations higher!
