If we're signing a 28 year old stay at home dman we are 100 percent going to sign 28 year old Shattenkirk.
Not rebuilding. We've got 23 million dollars burning a hole in slats pocket
He's lighting the cigar as we speak.

Well the organization has no choice but to see what they really have with Hayes now. I wouldn't close the book on him breaking out, but hes shown nothing to indicate that he will.
Even if he replaces Stepan's production and somehow morphs into a 3 zone stud, who is replacing what Hayes gave them last year? Do you expect Grabner to pop 27 goals again?
I think the only guys you could really point at and bank on for improvement from last year are Buchnevich, Vesey and Stepan, one of those guys isn't here anymore.
My comment on the 8th seed doesn't have to hold water with you but know that its true. How often does an 8th seed win a single round? Most 8th seeds are teams that are the best of the worst teams in their conference, Nashville was the exception to the rule.
So 4-5 years at more than 4M per. Great.
I think there's a middle ground between these two schools of thought that can still have this team primed to be better in 2-3 years than they were these past few seasons. There's a lot of underlying fsctors though: we need Buch to develop into a top-line winger, along with Hayes (seriously wake up bub), Mika, Miller, and Skjei, and Vesey taking the next steps. I think we need one move shake-up move to add a young talent (like Galchenyuk who you've mentioned although I'm iffy on him) and Gorton will have created his new young nucleus moving forward. Those guys above will be hitting their prime and then we can add in guys like Andersson, Chytil, Shesty, Graves/Day/Zboro. It looks promising going forward.
IMO Gorton's main focus is 2-3 years down the road. Shattenkirk or Smith will still be effective then, so I'm not too worried about their contracts if that's the way he wants to go. There's a much bigger picture being painted here, and I'm excited to see what it looks like when all is said and done.
What did you think? He'd be less?
That sounds about right and the #'s we all were thinking he'd get if he came back.
I'm not shocked at this at all and it's probably fair as well considering the market place.
Only caveat is, Smith needs to play like he played after he came to us especially in the playoffs. He does that which I don't think is a stretch to think he'll not be a bust, I'm OK with paying him 4.0 for 5 or 4.25 for 4.
Zuccarello is the next guy i trade. Good contract, he's at the age where typically he already peaked and will begin a decline. His value will never be higher. His 2 years remaining will help maximize his value. Wait any longer and you risk a bad season or injuries. Nash is the next one after that, but his value increases as his cap hit drops.
I can see that but I think the X factor is getting that elite first line center to go to war with the penguins hawks etc. like it or not teams with big stars down the middle win. It's our Achilles heel.
No, I'm thinking if the Ragers are willing to give 5 years to Smith, but 6 or 7 is too much for Shattenkirk, they are dumb.

Just waiting for Zuccarello to LA to play with Kopitar. Those just had unreal chemistry last year before the season. They need a winger with a reasonable cap hit. The Rangers scouted them A TON.
Rangers aren't allowed to have game changers whether on defense or offense, its a written rule. minus VERY few (gaborik, Nash one year, and Jagr like a decade ago).
I like Shatty but are you referring to him as a game changer ?
Good I want Smith signed so we can turn our focus to the next phase
This makes a ton of sense.
But what do the rebuild-on-the-fly-ing Rangers get in return that is sufficient value for a player of Zucc's caliber on that fantastic contract?
Why do you think they made the trade for Zibanejad? Do you remember him pre-injury and then this postseason?
That came off snarky, but that wasn't my intention. Gorton already made one big reset move. It's panned out so far with Mika. Deangelo is a huge wild card, but if Skjei can put up 40 under AV, what can he do? I love the Lias Andersson and Chytil picks.

60 point power play weapon from a defenseman I consider a game changer. especially for THIS team.
I think he is. Offensively for sure. I drool at the thought of him and MAC on the same pairing.
