So the Rangers would be willing to give a 28 year old Smith 5 years (rumored 4 to 5 from Brooks). but.....

yeah... umm.. I don't even know

It's pretty clear the org is a big believer in Kevin Hayes, and why shouldn't they be? He's 6'6, has big time puck skills, and is entering his 4th year. Pretty sure this is an ideal time to see if he can handle a big role.

Your comment on the 8th seed thing holds no water to me. Like 3/4 of the team has a reasonable expectation to "get better" in some way shape or form, but to win the dance you gotta get there first.

Well the organization has no choice but to see what they really have with Hayes now. I wouldn't close the book on him breaking out, but hes shown nothing to indicate that he will.

Even if he replaces Stepan's production and somehow morphs into a 3 zone stud, who is replacing what Hayes gave them last year? Do you expect Grabner to pop 27 goals again?

I think the only guys you could really point at and bank on for improvement from last year are Buchnevich, Vesey and Stepan, one of those guys isn't here anymore.

My comment on the 8th seed doesn't have to hold water with you but know that its true. How often does an 8th seed win a single round? Most 8th seeds are teams that are the best of the worst teams in their conference, Nashville was the exception to the rule.

Positive vibes in this post about Smith...I like

I also like we are talking to Anders Nilsson. He's the guy I said yesterday I want us to get to be Hanks backup. He has talent and major upside. I'd bet once Messieur Allaire got his sweaty paws on Nilsson, he'd be the new Talbot/Raanta before long maybe even better. I watched alot of Nilsson over the years...he's got skills folks.

But why does Montreal do this? Galchenyuk is being dangled for a center or d. Just like stepan. If they need a wing that bad they can re-sign Radulov at his ransom instead of losing another asset.

My reasoning for Habs doing it:

1. Chucky is their dog house. Habs Nation is livid with him as is mngt for tanking in the playoffs and pretty much the entire season. He was terribad
2. Chucky could get them some sweet return. Zucc and a #4 pick in '18 is not shabby return.
3. Getting Zucc allows Habs to not be bent over as they have been Radulov's nutty crazy demands. With Zucc, they can say to Radulov...go F yourself...we are not paying you 7 mill per so you can coast on our team now that your not in a "prove it year" like last season was. They know Zucc they can trust would play all out.
4. Finally, they can go out and sign a Hanzel or Bonino or a Gagne and with either of those three, that would be not a terrible replacment for Chucky and they'd have Zucc as well

We know the reason why it would work for the Rangers.

We get younger(23 vs 29), we get a highly skilled center to replace Steps production. We get a guy who could be the elite 1A center that we've been missing.

And yes I know it's probably unlikely this will happen. But it does makes sense.

You guys are insane. The ~entire team is under 28 or something minus what 2 guys?
Last 4 years point totals:
96
113
102
101 (in what was supposed to be a possible non-playoff year)

This isn't a video game, this is real life and the Rangers are a business. I forget the stat but it's the 7th or 8th youngest team on average itl?

You JUST saw an 8th seed (NSH) make the Cup Finals and have huge equity in the series, the playoffs are ****ing lotto.

How far do you take this? Trade guys on their 3rd year of ELC for guys on the 2nd year of ELC?

Sign Shattenkirk and Smith, have real competition for the 6th/7th spot with a much better HFD D with the rest, buy at the trade deadline because that's what you do when you're a contender. Sheesh.

I definitely agree with you on this one. The rangers have a lot of good young talent that are on the cusp of taking the next step. The philosophy should be that of winners. You want to breed winners. You want them to compete at the highest level and reach for the stars. The New York rangers organization is a winning culture. Keep it that way.

McPhee should just stick to the draft. Yikes.

Maybe at the deadline he'll trade us Cody Glass for Rick Nash. :D

Totally get on the phone with him JG!
He basically gave away a top 4 dman for a second round pick three years from now.
He found a way to screw us over from the players we wanted in the draft (albeit the more I've heard about andersson and chytil the more I like them especially the latter )

It's a re-tool for sure, if things go south they'll still go for it because it's not hard to make the playoffs and playoff games are pure profit.

MZA is the best, most dangerous forward on the team and makes any line he's on the #1 line on the team. Chop off everyone's fingers who suggest trading him.

Trading Nash for 20 cents on the dollar is asinine, his potential if he has a good year >>>> whatever water trash he goes for.

McDonagh's an actual veteran #1 defensemen on an excellent contract, like, what? Just, no. Come on.

Grabner's hugely hit or miss, that's whatever. Will either have another great year and price himself out, or suck and not be wanted back.

They've invested a ton of organizational capital into Kevin Hayes, he's not going anywhere being idk, 24 y/o, 6'6, etc.

Staal is a negative asset.

Lundqvist retires a Ranger for a variety of reasons.

Teams don't hold a ridiculous fire sale like this ever.

Zuccarello is the next guy i trade. Good contract, he's at the age where typically he already peaked and will begin a decline. His value will never be higher. His 2 years remaining will help maximize his value. Wait any longer and you risk a bad season or injuries. Nash is the next one after that, but his value increases as his cap hit drops.

Cap space should equal signing Smith before he hits ufa Saturday

I'm also good w Nilsson . Had a good Save percentage

Who knows maybe we keep everyone, rangers save cap and JT actually hits FA.. Nash would be gone too, Rangers could make a real run maybe.

Excellent read as well as this is the "anti Ranger Boy" approach and the one I truly believe is the way JG is headed. We'll know a heck of alot more on July 1 but if history is our judge, I'd be shocked if Shatty, Smith and some decent to good center isn't rostered as we continue the "retool".

I've said this infinitum. This is NY ****ing City. This is not the Island or Jersey or Colordo or Buffalo or even Pittsbugh or Chicago. We can't just **** up and be ****** while we attempt a full rebuild here in this town.

JG as someone said very astutly yesterday is trying to thread the needle here. Retool, get younger yet stay competitive, playoff worthy, exciting, entertaining and possible Cup contender all at the same time.

So far he's done a damn good job. I think we have to trust him as we go thru the process. Let's see what JG does July 1...we'll know a hell of alot more than we do right now as we all speculate about what players are going to be brought in or not.

Anyways, great read GSC...couldn't agree with your assessment more...well done

I think there's a middle ground between these two schools of thought that can still have this team primed to be better in 2-3 years than they were these past few seasons. There's a lot of underlying fsctors though: we need Buch to develop into a top-line winger, along with Hayes (seriously wake up bub), Mika, Miller, and Skjei, and Vesey taking the next steps. I think we need one move shake-up move to add a young talent (like Galchenyuk who you've mentioned although I'm iffy on him) and Gorton will have created his new young nucleus moving forward. Those guys above will be hitting their prime and then we can add in guys like Andersson, Chytil, Shesty, Graves/Day/Zboro. It looks promising going forward.

IMO Gorton's main focus is 2-3 years down the road. Shattenkirk or Smith will still be effective then, so I'm not too worried about their contracts if that's the way he wants to go. There's a much bigger picture being painted here, and I'm excited to see what it looks like when all is said and done.

If we're signing a 28 year old stay at home dman we are 100 percent going to sign 28 year old Shattenkirk.

Not rebuilding. We've got 23 million dollars burning a hole in slats pocket
