Especially with the injury he sustained a few months ago. I love Jumbo, but him being 38 coming off a major injury that he played through during the playoffs isn't enticing at all for me.

The injury is the main reason. I wouldn't be thrilled with him either way, but that puts it over the edge.

Hanzal is not signing a 2 year deal.

Mac is definitely a franchise player. The only issue is he should not be manning a powerplay but that is on the coaching staff and the front office although a small blame is placed on Mac for not developing his shot or that part of his game.

But aside from that Mac brings everything else to the table. And like someone else said, i would like to see him with even a semi-competent defenseman that can also skate.

If the Rangers are looking at moving Miller back to center, then it's fair to assume that not one of Thornton, Hanzal or Bonino will be a target this off-season.

theres a limit to how much retooling on the fly we can do before we degrade our ability to compete.

moving 27 sends the wrong message.

his game shows no signs of wear.

he's the capt of this team.

he's our best dman and continues to be for the foreseeable future.

moving 27 should not happen.

now that rick nash feller......

Nash is more than reasonable to consider moving. At worst, he's still a quality, two-way hockey player that can give you a productive season and then his 7M+ contract comes off the books going into next offseason.

Just bringing in his veteranship would be a positive. With Hank in net we need to be contending for cup NOW. Signing him on a short term deal would be much smarter than throwing long term contracts at guys like Bonino or Hanzal. If we aren't competing for a cup now we might as well trade guys like Hank, McDonagh, Zucc, Kreider

I don't understand supporting dealing Stepan for pure futures and unwilling to budge on older players.

Everyone should be on the table. Their ability to compete in the next 2-4 years is seriously impaired without Step. The window is shut.

McDonagh will get what, $8-9M in 2 years?
Nash will be gone. Zucc will be declining and a $6M player.

Why hold these players?

The Rangers are unlikely to compete for the Cup today, but they're still aiming to make the playoffs.

Those are all assumptions.

Again, we lost Stepan, a center who produces 50-60 points per year. Thornton has eclipsed that every year consistently in the 75-85 point range with the exception of last year. You replace Stepan with Thornton and you still have a legitimate offensive group.

You replace Girardi/Klein/Holden with Shattenkirk/Smith/DeAngelo and you have a much better defense and offense overall. A much better powerplay as well with defensemen who can move and shoot the puck.

Had they had those factors they would have absolutely beat Ottawa and wouldve battles Pitt.

I'm still not comfortable with the thought of Hayes playing top 6 minutes. Especially with how he looked in the second half of last season.

I agree, but I think it is what it is. Do not think Rangers have assets to bring in legitimate young top 6 center via trade and there is no one in free agency (except Thornton but I would not sign him). And I think at some point Rangers have to find out what they have in Hayes.

That Stepan trade was a grade A example of taking **** and making lemonade, let me tell ya.

Yes because we know 2 days after Andersson was drafted and not 2-3 years whether or not he'll be the goods or a bust or not. Just like we all knew at time in 2008 Stepan was drafted 51st overall, he would end up better than Nikita Filatov who was drafted 6th overall and 15 other guys drafted in that years first round....right?

That's because drafting 18-19 year old kids are an exact science and so we can say definitivly right now Andersson won't have anything close to the career Stepan had.

Oh and we already know what JG is doing on July 1 with the extra 6.5 million he now has as his disposal plus the addition of DeAngelo...right?

I mean of all the things you are going to try and criticize Gorton about Fishie, you pick this?....LOL.

So this move here by JG trading Steps and Raanta for Andersson, DeAngelo and $6.5 million cash is your answer to who JG screwed up? And not even wait till July 1?....You can't make this **** up. :shakehead

The Rangers want to play fast and faster. Joe Thornton???

The Rangers can still play a fast game with Thornton in the mix. They have been able to do so with the legs of Stepan and Hayes up front. They were able to compete with a deteriorating Klein and Girardi in the back. 3 of those 4 are gone. DeAngelo will be faster and can jumpstart the transition game. So would Shatty. They can afford to take on Thornton who is a career 52.6% on the dot. He hasnt finished below 50% since 2002-2003. He could help this team a lot not just competitively but a guy like Hayes.

Looking at centers with high cap hits that teams might want to unload...

Jordan Staal - 6 mill (signed through 2023)
Henrik Sedin - 7 mill (pending ufa)
Ryan O'Reilly - 7.5 mill (signed through 2023)
Paul Stastny - 7 mill (pending ufa)

I'd take any of these. FOr the two pending ufas, maybe we trade staal at 25% retained (although vancouver would never bite on that)holden straight up?

Only guy on that list I'd want would be ROR...love everything about his game and he'd be a great fit. And he's still young enough. Damn tho, adding his $7.5 is alot of cap space. I don't know but as tempted as I'd be to want ROR, Sabres would likely ask for a ton and not sure it would be worth it for us.

Would Henrik come here withought his brother? Doubtful.

Why hold these players?

Because the addition of possibly Shattenkirk (Which I believe is the plan and always has been) plus deangelo and then guys like Vesey, Hayes and Zibby taking a step forward could make us a better team. We also probably need to add at least 1 maybe 2 centers via ufa or trade.

A few ifs in there but we still have a good group with guys who can grow.

I think RB's point was that they moved Stepan so that they can get even quicker.

Replacing him with Thornton doesn't exactly help them there.

There are some teams desperate for center but I am not sure Hanzal will get much more than 2 years. He could see a fit here, contending team might be appealing to him after years spent in Arizona.

Lias Andersson is one of the most NHL ready prospects outside of Patrick and Hischier in the entire draft. He's one of the oldest and already plays a pro style game. If it were me, I wouldn't rush him along and let him play in an increased role in Sweden before coming over. The Rangers' front office and coaching staff needs to talk to Lias and tell him to not be afraid to take some risks offensively to develop those skills. If his offensive production takes the next step, he can be our Henrik Zetterberg . I also like the Alfredsson comparison a lot.

With all of that being said, it wouldn't surprise me if the Rangers scouts thought that he was NHL ready this coming season.

I understand that but Thornton is not going to hold this team back. They will be quicker just by getting rid of Klein and Girardi and adding quicker defensemen. We have seen how important quick defensemen with good vision and passing ability are in this game. Thornton helped the Sharks get to the finals just two years ago. I think he still holds a lot of value.

Then he won't have much interest in coming here.

Hanzal will get a decent contract. Hes also good to miss 20 games a season.

Are you giving 38 year old Joe Thornton a 3 year contract? Stepan and Hayes are not 38 years old coming off major knee surgery.
