I'd move McDonagh anyway. 2 years left on contract; I don't want to pay a 35-37 year old defenceman what he'll get in a long term deal. Get a couple early picks and a good prospect or two. If the NYR have to sweeten the deal to better the return, I'm good with that. Probably have to get an NHL now defenceman to fill the gap until the prospects are ready, or just let the kids play (my preference).

Yup. I have no problem moving McDonagh but not for peanuts. I want at least an established center back.

Travis Hamonic just returned a 1st and a pair of 2nds.

I don't think the Rangers would have to do anything to get a big return for McDonagh.

Isn't Ekblad's contract a bit of a nightmare? They wouldn't think of moving him though, right?

That's why you trade them McDonagh for Barkov or Trocheck +

Hedges against Ekblad's concussions and gives him a hell of a partner if healthy.

I'd take that and have the other team throw in a good prospect and an NHL player. If Gorton has to throw in something else (mid level prospect/mid round pick, so be it).

I like McD. But this team is not winning anytime soon. If you can move him for a bunch of first rounder, etc. you have to do
It.

Moving McDonagh for anything other than a franchise piece would be stupid.

Is McD a franchise piece? He's a really good 1D but he's not franchise. EK is franchise defensemen. If Skjei can absorb his minutes without missing a beat, then I absolutely would consider trading McD for fair value. That's the question though, can Skjei take those minutes and build off of last season, or would he struggle? If Skjei improves upon last season, McD becomes a very valuable trade asset. You don't need 2 first pairings on D to win.

He only gets moved for a top 15 elite center.

I know it's the offseason so it's loony town around here, but McDonagh is a top 30 D in the league in his prime. You don't move him for anything less than an overpayment just because you're worried about paying him when he's 37.

Frankly his contract worry for the future seems overblown to me anyway. Girardi and Staal were risky long term deals because they couldn't skate. McDonagh is one of the best skating D men in the league. He could absolutely be good into his 30s. Not all players need to be moved just because they're nearing 30. Even still, I don't think he'll get a 7 or 8 year deal. His next deal will prob be 6 years.

Skjei cannot step in and replace a top-15 D in the NHL, and I'm a huge Skjei fan. McDonagh would have to bring back something ridiculous to even make it worth it, and no I don't mean Sam ****ing Reinhart (not directed at you).

Hanzal would be perfect on a 2-year deal. Brings exactly what Rangers need from their 3C with Hayes and Zibanejad playing in top6. In two years Lias should be ready to be top9 C.

I'm still not comfortable with the thought of Hayes playing top 6 minutes. Especially with how he looked in the second half of last season.

What do you think about a deal with Toronto centered around McDonagh and Nylander?
Toronto is in need of a top defenseman and Nylander/Zibanejad would give us a really strong and young 1/2 Center combo (I would think we'd use Nylander as center rather than winger).

I would do it. Toronto probably doesn't touch it to be honest.

The Rangers aren't moving McDonagh. Dallas was willing to give up the 3OA for a top pairing Dman. They could have ensured getting Pettersson, and had their franchise center of the future as well as other pieces. Didn't happen.

Besides, before any 'trade' of McDonagh, I'd like to see how he plays without the the tire fire around his neck that was Girardi.

If we don't make any win now moves like Shatty or picks for a top 6 center, Hate to say it but either deadline (doubtful if we are out) or next off season is the time to deal Zucc, McD, Nash gone, and revisit the Staal thing. Asset management brah.

I'm fine with Hanzal for 2 or Bonino for 4.

Thornton would be one of the few moves I wouldn't be able to find a way to be positive about.

Especially with the injury he sustained a few months ago. I love Jumbo, but him being 38 coming off a major injury that he played through during the playoffs isn't enticing at all for me.

I don't want NYR to even think about Hanzal or Bonino, both will command way too high AAV and way too much term, stay away.
