People really like this move for the Rangers

If that is really the direction I'd be much happier about it, yet I am concerned this will be more of, do one thing one way, then turn around and go the other direction.

I still would not like the trade even if that was the direction but at least it would signal a direction beyond one year at a time.

Whatever. This franchise is not winning a Cup until we get an actual top line franchise center.

This trade is JG acknowledging that and putting us in the best position to find one at 7.

Re-sign Smith
Sign Shattenkirk
Trade Holden
Klein Retires
Trade Hayes, 21st OA, 2nd round '18, Gropp for Mackinnon
Sign Thornton to 35+ contract and start him on IR
Sign Boyle

But eventually:

Kreider-Zib-Buch
Nash-Thornton-Zucc
Miller-Mackinnon-Vesey
Fast-Boyle-Grabner
Nieves

Mac-Shatty
Skjei-Smith
Staal-DeAngelo
Bereglazov
Graves
Pionk

Hank
Kinkaid

Its not about DeAngelo.

Its about not getting the proper return for Stepan. This was embarrassing.

So if we get a #1 center out of #7, and DeAngelo becomes a top 4, borderline top 2 defenseman.... is it still embarassing?

I would have liked a forward like Dvorak or Strome too... but there is some exciting possibilities here too. First of all being, get ready for Shattenkirk.

Trade Nash
Sign Shatty
Resign smith
Package for Galchenyuk
Sign Radulov (or Oshie if he can't find a deal with Washington, much prefer Oshie)

I can't imagine for a second they're going to sit on this newly found cap space and rebuild. Plus, they still have a whole mess of wingers on the roster. I think additional changes will come that don't completely revolve around free agency.

At this moment, I don't see Smith being brought back

That is, of course, you make the assumption that Shattenkirk is all but confirmed

They wouldn't trade for DeAngelo if they thought he was going to be in the AHL.

Bereglazov will be on the team next year

Don't see where Smith fits, unless Staal is moved
