His name is Igor Shestyorkin...:handclap:

Putting things on him that didn't happen under his watch, nice.

And they went from losing in the 1st round to losing in the 2nd. That isn't backwards. Im worried that they may spin their wheels because the FO overvalues certain guys, but lets not act like his short resume here is filled with failures. Almost everything hes done over the last calendar year has been positive.

This too, although I think it was somewhat implied Sather was sort of handing over the reigns at that point as well, since Jeff was promoted what a week later officially?

I've laid out the reasons, really poor deadline moves, got basically nothing for Talbot, got little for Hagelin, hasn't upgraded the right side of the defense, etc.

They aren't fake reasons. You might disagree, but lets not act like a team that has went backwards the last two years in results is a team thats undisputedly going in the right direction.

Correct me if I am wrong... Slats was the one who made those deals?

They bought out Girardi. Glass is gone. They have signed a bunch of UFA defensemen out of college. Smith was a brilliant acquisition. Unless you are complaining about the Eric Staal move, in which case, they said they were giving it one more shot so the expectations were clear. Free Agency hasn't even started yet and he couldn't resign Smith or anything until the expansion draft was over.

You have no reasons.

gorton not firing av immediately after benching buchnevich is why

Why lie? These posts were all before last season started.

Gorton's on strike one.

How he handled this season was awful.

Trading Saarela and picks for Staal. Didn't work.
Keeping Yandle without an extension in hopes that we could win the Stanley Cup. Didn't work.

Right there is a significant difference in the future asset this team will have. We lost Saarela, two picks, and whatever we could've gotten for Yandle.

I have little confidence. Not none, but little. I think Gorton is sooner to guide us to 1st overall without tanking than winning the Stanley Cup.

He's done a fantastic job with the forwards. I don't know if you can call it fantastic, considering we haven't added another PMD, and we lost our only two PMD's.

You are getting so defensive for some reason.

I don't know what deals were to be made, but to think there's not a single team in the NHL that would swap a Top 4 PMD for 28 year old first line winger, where a pretty fair deal can be worked out, thats really hard to believe. Nash, I understand that could be more difficult. There probably aren't that many teams interested, but I doubt there were that many teams interested in Phil Kessel. Didn't stop Toronto from getting a good deal. Klein's a decent player on a good contract, there could've been a deal available, and actually I remember reading Larry Brooks state that there was almost a deal for Klein at the draft. Teams trade players like McIlrath, Fast, Lindberg, Hrivik, Jensen all the time. Doesn't mean we'd get a ton for them, but wouldn't it be smart to try to trade these younger expendable players for other younger expendable players who play a style of play that we need to add? Low value young players with some potential for other low value young players with some potential.

Also, we don't need a perfect deal. I don't know whether Gorton has been holding out for that or not. We have like 13 or 14 forwards who can play in the top 9, and probably 18 in contention for a spot on the roster, 17 if you aren't counting Lindberg, and 16 if you aren't counting Glass, but with AV as coach, I would count Glass. We need to get rid of some forwards. I don't want to have to lose our best forwards, but I feel like we have the depth to lose some of them. Its not going to do the team any good to have a top 5 offense in the league with numerous NHL forwards playing in the AHL while we have a middle 1/3 defense that eventually gets us knocked out of the playoffs again.

This too, although I think it was somewhat implied Sather was sort of handing over the reigns at that point as well, since Jeff was promoted what a week later officially?

Everything leading up to the Talbot trade was that Sather was driving a hard bargain. If we're being honest and not using hindsight, Talbot went for about what he should have gone for.

The Hagelin trade was horrible. Getting Etem back as your centerpiece was dreadful, its like they scouted and liked him as an amateur player and then didn't bother to take a look at him as a pro.

Based on results alone, they actually improved this year compared to last year.

I was referring to the results from the two previous years before these two under the old GM.

Putting things on him that didn't happen under his watch, nice.

Im worried that they may spin their wheels because the FO overvalues certain guys, but lets not act like his short resume here is filled with failures. These all technically happened under his watch.

I think it might even be fair to hold him to moves before he was officially the GM because there were rumblings for years that he did all the day to day stuff, and Slats would only sign off or not on big decisions.

While you're not wrong to think this way. I was disappointed in those returns as well for Talbot and Hagelin. But you need to realize trading requires a partner. It's hard to criticize the man, when those very well may have been the best offers available.
I am sure he was pressing Dallas on Talbot, and Dallas is the one who held out and didn't pony up which looking back I am sure they regret with how well Talbot played since the trade.

I'm not naive to think its all about Gorton's poor job in these trades, but at the end of the day, he's tasked with making the team better. If he can't do that, no sympathy, just like there isn't sympathy if a player doesn't perform up to how they are expected to play.

Did I just get warped back to 2016? Same exact things being said because there wasn't a slew of trades. Then what happened? We got Zibanejad. Patience people, patience.

I know right? They would take the 7th + Crouse and call it a day because other teams have made deals, when in reality, that would be a bad deal for us.

I want a trade and i want it now

A good trade where we rip the other team off that is..

I remember watching the Gorton interview after the Talbot trade. He mentioned specifically that there was potential for a better deal that didn't come about. That always felt to me like Slats did Edmonton a favor on his way out the door. I have nothing to back that up, but it just seemed odd for him to mention it.

Let's be counting our lucky stars sather isnt the gm and Gorton is. He would sign Doan 3 years 5 million per . Shattenkirk 8 years at 7.5 million per with ntc and tanner glass for another 3 to 4 years at 1.5-2 million per.

Correct me if I am wrong... Slats was the one who made those deals?

You have no reasons.

Why would Slats have? Does he still make decisions? We were hearing even before Slats retired that Gorton was making the day to day decisions, and was basically already the GM.

Buyouts are crippling for the future cap, Glass gone being made into an accomplishment just shows how bad the situation was to begin with. Gorton obliged his coach's sick obsession last year, that was his call to let AV do that. Also, for all we know, he'll be back next season after being signed as a UFA. Lets not count our chickens before they hatch. All teams sign UDFA's, tell me when they find UDFA's that produce above what UDFA's of other teams produce. I don't consider a 2 and 3 for a rental #4D to be a great trade. The trade deadline market is a terrible one to venture into. Whether that player is re-signed is besides the point.

And I've been complaining about the job he's done since he came into the job, as referenced in my post to PMII. I just don't get confidence from his decisions. I know people want to trust the new GM, but the first offseason he was GM he did a bad job, then he had the Yandle/Staal trade deadline debacle, and while I think last off-season was largely positive and the trade deadline wasn't as much of a disaster as previous ones, I still can't say I have confidence in the job he's done. Thats before we even consider if this team is better now than they were when he came into the job and the smaller details of his first two years on the job.

Whatever, we can agree to disagree. Hopefully he makes some good moves the next few weeks.

I took it as an Eastern Conference team made a better offer for Talbot but it was nixed because it was a competitor.

I'm sure Slats is still in Gorts ear all the time and has a very big input into deals that are made and not made.

Not really. This team outplayed and dominated the sens who were one goal away from reaching the cup finals. And this was with Girardi, and staal playing top minutes.
Replace Girardi with Shattenkirk on top pairing and boom the team is a contender

I disagree. It helps but who is going to score crucial goals at key times for this team in the playoffs. MSL isn't on this team anymore. Most of our forwards have very spotty playoff production.

There is no agreeing to disagree because what has been a string of good moves to me has been the exact opposite to you.

This post continues to tell me you want to do nothing but complain by not giving the FO some credit for getting guys like Berglazov, Vesey, etc. Oh, you forgot about Vesey didn't you.

The Yandle trade was made under Slats watch as well. Blaming Gorton for how he handled the second year of that deal is absolutely absurd.

My belief in Gorton is that he will do a great job this summer. If Stepan is traded it will be a for a good return. If that doesn't exist, he won't be traded. I feel like some people forget it takes two teams to make a trade. If the interest or assets aren't available for our players, what do you want Gorton to do? Go on some pipe dream selling binge where he trades everything for whatever we can get and ice a bunch of under 23's next year en route to getting Dahlin in hopes that we can get a franchise player?

No. Gorton will make smart, consistent moves as he has done since he started. Being mad about the Eric Staal trade when the expectations were set that they were giving that group one more year may be the most absurd thing I have ever heard on this board. This is going to be a long summer and there is plenty of time for Gorton to reshape this team. I am still of the belief that we will look drastically different starting this season than we do right now.

Oh man. We all do. What I would give to see Stepan traded for 7th OV, Dvorak ++++++++

Then I wake up.

I had a dream last night that they dealt Nash and McDonagh for the 3rd overall, Honka, Ritchie, and Niemi. Almost texted my brother to tell him about it this morning before I realized it was all in my head.

PB, one correction. Before the change, Gorton was handling the day to day duties, but Sather was making the decisions. It was well known that, even if everyone else on the staff thought one way, if Sather thought different, Sathers opinion was how things went.

There's more to GMing than personnel decisions and negotiations. People don't realize there's a daily aspect to the job.

I actually have full confidence in Gorton. Some solid trades, but more importantly good use of UDFA signings that everyone seems to take for granted after they happen.

I can't really think of any bad moves he's made. And that includes extending Vigneault.

The Staal trade was abysmal and I disagree on AV.

The Staal trade was abysmal and I disagree on AV.

AV didn't use Staal properly. That is the one big negative I will give Gorton. Staal could have been a good piece but was misused by the coach. I don't feel like there have been any repercussions for AV's mishaps. Then again, I don't know what goes on in the front office. For all we know AV is as likely to finish his contract as he is to be fired half way through the season.
