Before we get all breathless, it's likely that not only do the ducks have a side deal to protect Manson and vatanen from getting picked, but we also have a smaller side deal to protect Lindberg and Fast. Probably the same for Dumba.

i don't think we have a side deal to protect anyone...we don't have the picks to spare and there are pros and cons of losing any of lindberg, fast, grabner or raanta. so unless you are making a deal to not pick any of those 4 whats the point? why give up a pick to protect lindberg and fast when there is a good chance they would have picked grabner or raanta anyway

Doubt it.

Rangers seem like they're okay losing who ever Vegas takes.

Brooks reported we didn't. Could change, but we don't as of now.

Because he has way more to gain here than he would in any deals that would be made going forward. He has all the leverage here. If he's serious about building a competitive team, he would use it.

Good luck to him in his dealings down the track.

Doesn't it seem a bit odd hearing The Rangers have been shopping Stepan for a while? No one has squashed those rumors. If the Rangers were concerned about the players thoughts they would have leaked something through one of their guys.

I don't see a way Stepan ISNT traded this offseason. Too much smoke. That's he best way to get a disgruntled player.

Well, we will know for sure in just under two weeks

rangers don't leak anything these days and that includes confirming or denying a rumor. if they come out and deny the stepan rumor than the next rumor that comes along that they don't deny people will take that as confirmation because they didn't deny it

stepan is a big boy. he understands how trade rumors work and is aware of the timing of his contract clause.

Quite possible. But it's Carp's hypothesis, not mine.
Protecting Fast and Lindberg still leaves Raanta and Grabner available. Could see that being arranged for with as little as a 5th rd pick

If Vegas signs one of Lindberg/Fast, do we get Offer Sheet compensation? Or no since their rights will be held by LV?

None.

Let's hope Raanta is taken. Think he might be the easiest to replace, many goalies out there.

I really doubt that every good player left available is going to have a deal cut for them.

LV wants to be somewhat competitive next season not a 25 win team.

With the amount of teams most likely losing a defenseman to Vegas, Holden may have some value at the draft as a trade piece.

Here's an interesting thought:

The Rangers trade a 3rd rounder to Vegas to select Grabner.
The Rangers trade Holden to a team like Minnesota who will lose a defenseman and is looking to contend this year for a 3rd + 4th at the draft.

The values may be off but you get the idea. With the sheer volume of teams who will lose a defenseman and the lack of quality defensemen available in UFA, Holden may be a smart asset to protect until after expansion. People forget the guy put up quite a few points this year and was one of the teams best defensemen for the first 40-50 games.

I'm hoping that the d man is Staal and we just retain cash.

Going by the recent-most trades of 25-ish centers, I'd say Stepan is worth two prospects and a pick.

People are going to point to Stepan's point totals, but only 29 centers produced more at 5v5 than he did, and his 5v5 p/60 was higher than Duchene's.

Arizona wont move Keller, Dvorak or Perlini. Duclair regressed, Crouse and Strome didn't show much considering the strength and production of the 2015 lottery picks. Fischer is a stud and likely on the top of a lot of request lists. Merkley is nothing special. Looke is OK.

A good move IMO would be Fischer, Kudla/Hickey and #23. Very similar to the RoR trade

That may be a quantity for quality fair value deal... but what does COL really have to show for RoR?

Some signs of life from Zadorov and the worst NHL season imaginable right after?

Rangers need to get a young center that can step into the top 9 right away, plus a 18 -22 minute a night RHD for step.

Dvorak, Wood, 7th or 23rd & 2nd round pick.

Dumba, Kunin, 1st.

Faulk.

That's my take on FMV for Stepan.

I missed that completely. Always liked Dave. Seems like an old guy, but it wasn't even that long ago he played right? He was around in Dallas or Toronto basically up to the lockout IIRC.

I just looked. His last year was 2002. I know I'm old when I see the kids of guys like Dave Manson in the pros. Actually some of the sports kids like Ken Griffey jr have already retired on me.

Manson was a tough guy. He took on some really tough guys in his career. Dave played for Slats in Edm so we have that connection as was well as our GM (Silverfish) liking tough guys :D

I think other teams fans are worried about the Stephen Weiss effect for Stepan- that he might be overrated with his original team due to ice time and chemistry- end up busting somewhere else.

Stepan is a much better two-way guy than Weiss was but you get the idea.

Don't think this would happen but

Hagelin and Grabner would make one hell of a PK team.

Then flip them at the DL.

Good luck to him in his dealings down the track.

This isn't the UN, it's not like GMGM is going to be treated like Iran because he decided to get a little cutthroat for his once in a lifetime opportunity to build a quality expansion team. Also, he's not likely to deal with division rivals in the future anyway, so why help them now? Add to that the fact the GMs will come and go, the guy he "screwed over" might not even have a job in a year or two. Lastly, what are the chances this could or would actually come back bite GMGM in the ass? How many trades is he going to be in a position to make over his tenure there that would somehow not get done because of what he does this week? Probably not many, if any at all. That's without even weighing the benefit of what he could do for his franchise now versus the potentially small loss he could incur later.

This whole burning bridges stuff is so overblown. I'm not saying the guy should be making deals with his fingers crossed behind his back, but he definitely should be pitting teams against each other for bidding wars and getting the strongest returns possible for not selecting players.

Praying Raanta is taken instead of Fast or Lindberg. I'd be pretty blown to lose one of them.

Rangers are a goalie factory and our prospect pool at that position is the deepest part of the entire organization....

Unfortunately though, I just don't see it happening. There are so many goalies available for Vegas to take. And on those teams with goalies to select, there probably aren't players exposed as good as Fast and Lindberg.

Those are some pretty insane (ly unreasonable) expectations for a return in a Stepan trade.

We're not getting all that in return from ARI. I'm thinking Perlini and the 7th OA. Not getting Dvorak.

And Stepan for Faulk was laughed out of the building on the trade board.

the "Stephen Weiss effect" is piles of injuries.

Saw Hags and Etem were both left unprotected.
Gropp is the only guy left from that deal.

If you have to pick one of those 2, you pick Wood ;P Or Fischer or Garland, want no part of Crouse and DeAngelo is a head case so don't want him either.

Are you a Coyote troll? Crouse played a regular shift as a 19 year old last year. He plays a much needed heavy game and he has fairly good hands. Probably a career third liner but a good one with a chance of more. Wood is not highly regarded by the Coyotes. They thought enough of him that they didn't even bother calling him up when their defense was ravaged by injuries.

And to the person who mentioned that OEL signed a team friend,y contract and was not a risk flight....you are not right on either point.

Interesting to see what happens with the wild. If they lose a d, I'd rather don't have the basis for a deal. They can't afford to lose 2 key defenseman when center isn't a crippling need. If they pay off Vegas and lose a forward, maybe staal? Things could get interesting.
